After reading numerous posts on the G9 in the last two weeks, I logged on this morning expecting to be overwhelmed by the volume of contributions. But, no it appears it was all said pre launch. I think we get more excited over what might be rather than what is.

Out of my price range and not offering anything like the benefits over the G80 that would justify for me, a layout of 3 times the price of a G80. I've been getting some great results from my G80 and this price now confirms that I can go ahead and buy my second G80 body.

Maybe so but it is still 350 cheaper than my omd em1 mk2 at launch with better specs 4k 60p class leading viewfinder if they can improve the dfd over gh5 with better sensor performance im interested .

I look forward to reading lots of contributions once this camera is actually in normal people's hands.

Today's releases indicate it is indeed the flagship model, not just for Pany but perhaps of all M43 to-date? ...with claims of fastest auto-focus and improved DR etc etc.

So i doubt i would be dissapointed with the reality of this fantastic camera. Its just that i have always said that i would only buy a GH5 when i win the lottery, why - because i can! However when my ticket does come-in, Panasonic have just given me a nice dilemma. Even with such wealth, i would not buy both so i believe this camera will also take some sales away from their current 'flagship' GH5.

Every manufacturer needs a 'flagship' (Pany now have two!) ...not just for brand promotion but also for the top-end features/development which will migrate into more affordable models. Well done Panasonic :o)

...now where is my lottery ticket!? LOL

Yup too expensive. They take features away from the GH5 and add others so for someone who does both video and photos neither is best in class.

Some cool features but just too expensive when many of us would have been happy with an upgraded G85 with the better sensor.

Maybe I'll wait for a GX8 to get down to $800. Rock on.

Hi all,

IMHO the anticipation proves justified !

This is, AFAIK, an incredible entry ... it checks all (m43) boxes I can think of... EVEN PRICE.

We could all expect it to be bigger, heavier and more expensive ... that was a given.

But still .... it far exceeded all my (personal) expectations.

I had a month for testing a fujifilm X-T2 with kit lens and that combo proved truly great! (and near 2000 euro in Europe) yet the G9 at this same price (I hope including Leica lens) this is an *even better* deal.

Regards,

Stefaan

OK, but when does it stop? If each iteration is "bigger, heavier, and more expensive" we are going to end up with 2 pound DLSR-like monsters that cost as much as a small car. While I'm happy that m43 comes in many flavors for many different people, I'm a tad concerned about the trend towards "bigger, heavier, and more expensive".

I have to say, all these comments saying that the comparing of the G85 with the G9 makes the G85 even more attractive, have made me start to regret my preorder of the G9....haha I jest!

The G85 has always seemed to be good value for money, in all seriousness, but it lacked in what I would consider standard features - eg. 1/125th flash sync! Really? 8bit electronic shutter! In this day and age! OK, I'm being a little harsh...but it was for those reasons I never considered the G85...for me, even at that price point.

Is the G9 expensive? Yes. Is it expensive compared to an EM1 MKII? No. Is it as good as a Nikon D500? Probably not, over all. If I wasn't so heavily invested in m43, the Nikon D500 would already be in my camera bag...so why didnt I just opt for the EM1 MKII? Well, for all its features and the fact its still a great camera, I think it is over priced by about $300. Along comes the G9 and feature/price wise it fills my gap perfectly.

Some how, people think that a m43 camera shouldn't be priced above this imaginary figure of $1300. I don't care how much something costs, as long as it meets my own criteria - that the item is worth its value and it has features I require. For me the G9 fits those criteria.

Oh, and the oft complaint that m43 cameras are getting too large and heavy. Baloney! Go for a day out with a FF camera and full compliment of lenses, then try the same with an m43 system. Anybody will tell you, that its not the body but lugging those lenses around that kills you.

Do you find G80 DFD works for you? How well?
It's difficult to quantify. All I can say is that in most cases focusing is instantaneous. I shoot primarily moving subjects and I have a fair degree of success. I notice I am already taking pictures of BIFS that I have seen as an example of what you will be able to do with a G9.
