First Impressions: Piccure+ for Sharpening

I downloaded it and I'm all over the site looking for a price. Does anyone know how much it did cost.
I paid £70 for it in January (single activation)

Well I I think you have to activate it because it appears to be doing nothing no matter what I do with the sliders. When I click on the lock it wants the activation code.

It is a bit odd, the way they seem to have just shut down and put up the message about it apparently being free.

But there was another thread where people were still being asked for activation.

Its difficult to know what is going on.

Does it do anything when you click on the PREVIEW button?

If it is functioning normally it would run with a horizontal bar progress indicator in the centre of the split screen showing progress as it computes a preview for you which is then displayed in the right window with the original image in the left window.

That should function if in trial period if not the entire PROCESS and SAVE functions.

If none of these actions are functioning you are either not in Trial mode or your Trial has expired.

You never know, there may be a fix on how to get it working.

It's really rather impressive what it can do, but they do say there is not much using it if you already have high quality lenses.

The difference in image quality from my "not as good as I would like it" 24mm f2.8 AIs nikkor was amazing. No vignetting, no distortion, and pin sharp from edge to edge.

But its slow as it rebuilds the file pixel by pixel. I also had colour issues, and never understood the explanation of why it happened. But whatever the explanation, files always came back with different colours to the ones they had started with.

But I bought it mainly because of what it did with my files from the 24mm nikon, and cheaper kit lenses.

Worth trying, if the activation can be sorted out.

I downloaded a copy and it seems to be working normally. Just a few weeks ago I could not get the download to work so something has changed!

I'll purchase a copy when or if that option becomes available.

Maybe it's another DXO purchase:-)

A few things to check out when doing your trial.

There is a Lens+ setting which is to correct lens issues and a Motion+ setting to correct lens movement issues . . . test them both you may find one to work better than the other regardless of if you think you have a motion or a lens deficiency to rectify.

There are 3 Speed / Quality settings . . . again . . . test them all . . . sometimes a lesser quality correction provides as good or a better result than a higher quality . . . and the higher the quality setting the longer the processing time.

Then there are 5 Optical Aberrations settings to check . . . again . . . different results with different settings . . . check them all to see the differences. If doing fine detail I quite often get the best result on the MICRO setting . . . while if major softness in the image the STRONG setting may be better. I find the 3 middle settings rarely differ much and give pretty much the same result.

So there are actually 15 Lens+ settings and 15 Motion+ settings that you can check out . . . 30 possible different results in total . . . you obviously don't need to check all for every image and you will learn to see what results you get with different settings with different image issues. I will often check 3 or 4 or 5 going back and forth between to compare and see which I like best . . . or if you get a good result with your first or second test then you can go with that one . . . you will learn to see what results to expect with experience.

I find it best to determine the focus point in your image that you want the sharpest focus at . . . zoom in the max magnification at 400% [lower left corner of the interface] . . . set your test settings and hit the PREVIEW button . . . it will give you the quickest preview at 400% as it only corrects that area of the preview pane . . . you can then pull back to 100% to give you a better idea of the resultant correction at a more normal viewing level . . . zoom back to 400% again and set different settings and see if better or worse results . . . you may get drastically different results at different settings and you can quickly discount different settings that don't give you good results. I always use the side by side before and after viewing panes to compare before and after.

Another key feature is to again determine your desired sharpest focus point . . . zoom in to 400% again . . . then hold the option key [Mac] and click on the desired focus point . . . a small box will appear and Piccure+ will optimize on that focus point and theoretically get you the optimum correction on that point . . . control plus click removes the box or do option click at another location to relocate.

Do lots of testing to determine the different results you get . . . key to zoom in to 400% to minimize preview time . . . then pull back to a normal viewing level to see the end result.

When I am happy with a result then I click on SAVE and the image gets processed and opens in Ps as I have it set as a Ps plug in.

In Ps I always add a layer before opening the Piccure+ plug in . . . then after processing with Piccure+ and sending back to the Ps editor I often use a layer mask to selectively apply the Piccure+ correction . . . perhaps the boat only in a boat on water scene . . . or if a portrait the eyes, lashes, and eyebrows only as required . . . wherever selective sharpening is required apply with a layer mask to optimize your results.

When I run it, it requires activation.

I had tried the trial of v.3 when it was still a paid program, and of course the trial period expired some time ago.

Apparently if that is the case, it will not now run, even though there is currently no way to buy and activate it.

I'll always wonder what would have happened if they had priced it a bit lower.

Or if the user interface of the standalone version had been a bit less weird. :-)

Still, an occasionally very useful app; I'm glad I bought it.

One thing you could try if you're familiar with using Windows' Regedit.exe, is to search through the registry for every key that references Piccure+ and delete it. That might convince Piccure+ that you've never tried it before.

I would certainly create a restore point and/or back up the registry before doing this, of course. Just in case. Messing with the registry isn't necessarily risk-free. :-)

I have had Piccure and Piccure+ for several years now . . . just upgraded my Mac OS to the current High Sierra V 10.13 . . . and Piccure+ works fine . . . exactly the same as it has always worked.

Perhaps after your reinstall of your OS the Plug In is not in the correct folder???

I did not upgrade my operating system, I installed it from scratch and then also installed Piccure+ completely fresh. It now asks for activation and fails doing so.

Guess if you ever have to install Piccure+ on a fresh system you would face the same problem.

Support has never replied to my various mails (only the first autoreply was sent). The company is located in Germany, and as I am there as well I will try to call them next week, but I'm not very optimistic about somebody even answering the phone ...

I have a license for Piccure+.

I downloaded and installed a fresh copy from their site and it installed on a different computer OK. It does not indicate that it is a trail version although the activation menu is still their.

So at the moment it looks like there is no problem. I am waiting for 30 days to pass to be sure. It is possible that if you have tried the software before there might be code remaining behind that could interfere.

I will update after the 30 days.

My license was purchased in 2014. It was updated progressively to 3.0.0.29 in year 2016, and to 3.1.0.0 August this year without trouble.
License is now expired.
