I posted this also on the Sport and Action Forum but thought it would also be of interest here.

-----------------------------------------

I'm not a football shooter but I needed to shoot homecoming halftime so I thought I'd grab some football game shots while I was there.

The whole gallery of shots from the evening is here if you'd like to look at everything. https://garynelson.smugmug.com/Klein-Oak/Homecoming-2017

These are with my Sigma 120-300/2.8 EX OS and Sigma MC-11 adaptor.

And then these are with the Sony 70-200/2.8 G Master - and cropped a lot more. (I used the 70-200 at halftime for the homecoming shots and didn't change back just because I was too lazy to switch back to the heavier lens.)

What was your frame rate like using the Sig and adapter... 10FPS? Or were you able to get more?

Nice set of photos, well done!

What is your experience of Sigma tele lenses on A9 thru MC-11? Sigma let me tried 500/4.0G OS Sport and 120-300/2.8G OS Sport on my A9 in the PhotoExpo thru MC-11 adapter. Surprisingly they focus very well and can leverage virtually all AF points, not just AF points in center area. In the Javits Center I could not do your style tracking on fast moving subjects but only slowing moving persons :-)

I asked Sigma serviceman when they ever will release e-mount Art and Sport lenses? He said they are working on but trying to persuade me to buy EF lenses and used thru adapter and said they perform well enough thru adapter. I also tried 85/1.4 Art and 135/1.8 Art, both AF fast thru MC-11 and support eye-AF on A9. I don't think I could ever justify future Sony FE 500 GM (I barely used my 500L/4.0 IS), but much 'cheaper' Sigma 500G/4.0 OS Sport is a great alternative. Hope with native e-mount but if necessary I could get EF mount and use thru adapter if indeed it AF-C good enough.

What AF setting you used, Wide, locked-on flexible ...?

Gary, looking good :) . I'm starting to wonder if Sony is missing the boat with lens sales since Canon and Sigma appear to be making good money selling to Sony users.

You are a good advert for the a9. A higher MP a9x could really make a 70-200 shine. I have the 70-200 2.8vr mounted on the D3S 90% of the time and the 300 2.8 on the D500.

Wondering how the a7riii stacks up against the a9 since I rarely shoot long bursts these days.

Many thanks for posting

Wonderful !!! I am surprised how well that Sigma works for action with the MC-11 adapter. It has slightly better subject/background separation compared to your 200mm zoom but the difference is small. With ability to crop, that lens shines in the right hands !!! Thanks for sharing these.

Thanks for posting. Great looking images! Did you shoot RAW and put any special sauce when developing or is the color pretty much as is?

The reason I ask is that I think the color looks very nice for a high school stadium environment. As a Canon shooter who is eyeing the A7rIII, color is my main concern and this is a nice showing for Sony imho.

Sony colors are Sony colors and Canon colors are Canon colors, they will never be exactly the same. But you can make many adjustments in-camera for your JPGS and if you develop from raw you can make it anything you want. (Just don't expect it to be EXACTLY like Canon).

To my eye, Sony A9 has more pleasing colors than A7r II in OOC RAW (I only shoot in RAW format) by default in LR that requires less adjustments including WB. Hope A7r III colors are similar to A9.

I always shoot raw and PP in Lightroom Clasic CC.

You might notice that the shots with the Sigma have a different (cooler) color balance than those with the Sony lens. That's not due to the lens. I just made a change between camera AWB and using the Lightroom "auto" white balance setting in the second set. The camera AWB is more accurate overall but I kind of like the warmer LR setting.

I'm also a Canon shooter with a 1DX (Mark I). They both do a good job, although the Mark I Canon doesn't flicker adjust.

I prefer shooting with the A9 - better AF and definitely lighter. With Sony G Master lenses you get a faster burst rate, although you settle for 10 fps with an adapted Canon lens.

Thanks for your reply Gary. I will be interested to test the A7rIII to see if I will want to switch over from the Canon family. Since I will use it for video as well, Sony is offering a lot these days. Since they are focusing more attention on color (video side as well) it really is time for me to have a look.

I do custom color profiles as well but was let down when I did one for my a6300 which is used mainly for video. I could not get certain purples to be accurately represented. My Canons are very accurate after profiling. I am hoping the A7rIII is a lot better than the a6300 in this regard or it will be a no sale for me.

I'm glad I just have to have colors that are pleasing to me. I understand your need for something different.

Awesome results, really precise focusing. Thank you for posting.
