Would you buy it?

sold my 10d for 1400 EUR
Will probably sell my 17-40 for 800 EUR.
Together: 2200 EUR
I will get 10d + lens for 999 EUR

This will leave me 1200 EUR for nice other stuff.

And the photos will be quite good too!
I want to know that now that Phils review is out. Would you buy
the 300d knowing what you do now about it? Do you like the pic
quailty shown?

I need 1-shot in all of the creative modes, rear dial, PC Sync port, and I like the 10D Kelvin white balance and the 10D is crippled enough in customizability as it is without the 300D Dumbing this down further

The 300D looks like a great camera and Canon WILL run into trouble with supply and demand over it as it's going to be a massive hit (even at Typical Ripoff UK prices) but personally I'd go back to a D60 first , it have crappy AF / high ISOs and the Kelvin balance missing but it has most of the rest, especially Pro features like custom functions and PC Sync..

... don't foget to add the cost of a comparable lens such as the
17-40 F4.0L.
Why?

Cost is (within reason) no concern for me.
You lucky guy.

US$999 is one & a half months salary for most people in Malta.....way out of their budget. Let alone a 10D, 17-40L, etc.
I am getting an unexpected bonus from work in the region of 4000
euros, so the price of the camera is less of a reason to prefer one
camera over another.
Wow, where & what do you work?

I'm interested in working ina profession like yours.......even at the cost of abondoning pro photography.......!

Good luck!

..listening to the 300D_versus_10D_shutters_mp3? It certainly gave me the creeps.. Up to that moment I was sold to the 300D. Now I have to reconsider.
"tink_ clooonk" versus "ffstfff".

The 300D sounds like you are hitting a ruler against the desk, while the 10D sounds like scissors, unobstructed. Maybe this has something to do with the new mirror design that made the EF-S possible, and I am sure quality control would not have allowed for a sub_par_design in the product that “is about to trigger the next SLR revolution”. Still, it gave me food for second thoughts.

It sounds like someone hitting a rusty Volkswagen with an iron bar compared to any Rebel let alone the 300D! - the 10D is like a Leica M6 in comparison

And finally, I currently don't see why i need such a lens. I am
planning to buy 2 lenses with te camera, a Canon 28-135 IS and a
Sigma 100-300 F4 EX. I dont need a wide angle lens at this moment,
and when i do need it i always can buy such a lens, or a Sigma AF
17-35/2.8-4.0 EX Asf. (HSM) which is a lot cheaper than te canon
17-40 F4, which probably will be enough because i don't often make
wide angle shots.
Agree with you there Marc.

I am price-hunting at the moment for a 10D plus 17-40 plus 70-200 f/4 and by hook or by crook that is what I'll get. The 300D is definitely going to sell extremely well but the price difference is not enough to sway me, even though I'm not getting any bonuses any time soon! - congrats by the way Marc. Apart from the fact that I will never stomach the fact that I'm holding a "de-tuned" version of arguably the best value-for-money Digital SLR on the planet today.

In my opinion, the 2 cameras appeal to different market segments and cannot really be fairly compared.....if not to uncover the extent of de-tuning engineered by Canon and to further confirm how good a camera the 10D really is.

To all those who are waiting for a 300D: Good luck and let's see your photos. I'm sure you'll be as happy with your toy as I'll be with mine ;-)

I shoot mainly manual, and the so called "limitations" can be worked around in PS. I would rather use the money difference to buy more glass.
I also travel a lot and a lighter camera is better for me.

I admit that the 10D is a more versatile camera, but for my needs (and budget), I'll go with the 300D. Preordered one a week ago from Adorama.

I noticed, higher noise, blur (from 50mm lens), and many other reason.
Now, I think about go with SD9 or Fuji S2

Yup i do, anyway that's the only Dslr i can pay myself. The 10D with a glass and some accessorie cost about 4000$ here (my friend bought one 3 weeks ago). It's 1000$ more than my 51 widescreen HDTV..... I think it's a little too much for a Hobby that get new stuff each 8 months...

I was about to buy a S50 and since i dont care about the missing fonctionnality of the Rebel i'll go for this one....

How is that for being non-commital :-)

The pros are, I want an SLR not a rangefinder G5 type of camera.

I can afford it. I can't afford a 10D.

I also want a D-SLR that gives me wide-angle lenses and the EF-S system has the potential for that.

There lies the problem though. At the moment nothing wider than the 28.8mm equivalent than you get with the 18-55 zoom.

So I won't buy until I see wider angles such as 12mm materialise.

As to the cons that have come out of Phil's review, well being used to an OM4 the fact you can't have metering pattern or exposure compensation selection in idiot modes is an annoyance (as I may fancy being lazy but AE lock might still be handy).

The fact you can't select the pattern in Av, Tv etc is not a big deal to me either as I view the AE lock switching to partial metering as similar to what happens when I hit the spot button on the OM4.

You can't switch the OM4 to be in spot meter mode. You just take spot reading by pressing the spot button. So its a similar way of working. The AE lock button is very similar to the spot button on the OM4.

But my biggest gripe with the dumbed down features of the camera is that there is no circle in the viewfinder showing you the partial metering area.

Given the fact you get partial metering by hitting AE lock it seems me unbelieveable you have no idea just what part of the frame the partial metering covers.

It does not matter you can't switch permanently to partial metering. The fact you can get partial metering at all means you need to know the area covered.

I think having to guess how much of the frame I would be partially metering would drive me nuts.

So, lens issue aside, I don't know if this annoyance is enough to put me off.

Finally why they dumbed down the metering as thay have I don't know. The cost savings are clearly in the new way the sensor is made, the body construction, the penta-mirror and the fact it is made in Taiwan.

I know it would make it closer to a 10D functionally if the metering "worked" but people who value engineering and can afford a 10D would still buy it especially as I am not asking for all the other stuff like the Kelvin adjustment etc. It would still be different (and better) enough.
