Leica look (continued)?

More of this? Seriously? Weren't 150 responses enough?

For those M4/3 users irked, threatened or just plain jealous of the "Leica look"; seems like quite a few having followed the first ad nauseum thread… here's a current thread that illustrates how one might imagine the M4/3 world appears to much of the photography world…

😝😜

Long time since I posted here.

Leica look ?

A myth from a time when they made the best lenses, a time when it was very expensive to make really good lenses.

Today severall companies can make very good lenses, it is just a matter of price. Good lenses are still expensive but not that expensive than in former times.

Today it is a myth, thats all.

No need to pick this up again. As the other thread's OP, I have learned quite a lot about the term "Leica Look".

1. It may or may not be a real thing. Doesn't matter to me because I know what I mean when I use that term.

2. The term seems to really get people's panties in a bunch. I don't know whether its because of Leica envy or because there is no technical definition.

3. I also believe the term "Leica Look" comes from the fact that they were the first to consistently deliver the emotional photographs that people have come to love.

4. If Lumix had the first small durable cameras that were taken to places all over the world then the look would be called the Lumix Look.

5. Clearly I need to use another term when describing this look...

6. I am glad I started the conversation as I have learned quite a bit during the discussion.

I'm glad you have gotten at least a start at finding what you were looking for. It is all too common on this forum to have someone ask a very legitimate question and then have it start a storm tangential to what the OP was looking for. Keep having fun taking photos.

As have I. It's two words that mean little, if anything.

Uh, the photographers produced those shots, not the camera.

What about rebadged Panasonics that have that little red dot on them?

...still waiting for the double blind test...

When I see a double blind test that demonstrates this, I'm in. Until then, it was, is, and will be utter BS concocted by shooters who got sucked in to spending huge amounts of money on jewelry that records images.
Clearly Leica envy here....

Nope. I've shot them, and owned an M6 for quite a while. The M6 was one of my favorites. If I wanted one, I'd have one.

That said, why can't you post a few photos that illustrate this so-called "look?"

Fair enough, I falsely assumed the "Leica Look" was something that everyone just sorta new. But in looking for pictures that accurately portray this "look" it was clear to me that there isn't any one style that encompasses it. You sorta just know. I should also add that I did a search for Leica photos and there were quite a few leica shots that did not have that 'look' and I am including some shots from other cameras that do have the look.

Taken with a Sony, but I like the subject and the depth of the photo.

It's the look on your face when you hear the price.

"You want HOW MUCH!???"

Go to a Leica store and handle one, Take some photos with a fast lens. Shoot some people to see the skin tones. Shoot color and also black and white. Shoot in both JPG and RAW. Take the SD card home and process. See the results. Judge for yourself.

I have a proposition - buy a gf1 (it shouldn't cost much). I really believe it will get you a bit closer to what you want provided that you can keep it at iso 100-400 and dynamic isn't to great for it to handle. As much as I love my g80, I can't get it's files to look like the ones from the gf1 - it has better color gradation and gives a better sense of dimensionality.

Oh, yes, my gallery. They are mostly snaps.

Back to topic. The point of the article is that the Leica look can be emulated (last paragraph) but that it comes naturally with some Leica lenses. In the link below, please, find five examples that have hardly been touched except for exposure a bit and default sharpening applied. These are from DNGs opened in LR and exported as JPEGs.

Also, in the link below there is a comparison between the 50 Summilux-SL and the Zeiss Otus 55/1.4, both on the Leica SL. One can see the greater depth, the smooth transition from the in focus to the out of focus areas, the way contrast is maintained in the out of focus areas and more details are being resolved by the Leica lens.
