How complicated is the Em-1 ii menu system? Many reviews seem to suggest Olympus menus are overly complicated. Does it take away from the fun factor in shorting work this camera?

Oly menus are horrible. I'm sure the EM1 II with all the added features only make the situation worse. I have shot Oly cameras for over 5 yrs and still can't find anything I want quickly.

What experience do you have?

What camera/s do you currently own/use?

How good are you with technology generally?

Are you prepared to work through a manual?

It all makes a difference ... ;-)

Very (according to some people. I quite like them)

No, IMO.

Oly menus are complicated because they allow for a ridiculous level of configurability of the camera. This means that you can set up the camera the way you want it, and that makes photography more fun (for me).

I also agree with what Martin wrote ...

Unlike some, we both actually own the camera!

Spend a couple of hours when you first get the camera going through the menu options and set up the camera. Once setup, most things that you would change are on the LCD screen.

I don't find the menu any more difficult than that of any other cameras I have used, just different.

If you are coming to Olympus from another system there is a learning curve just like you would experience going to any other system. As others have stated you have countless options of configuration on the Oly menu. There are also some great starter suggestions for the settings online. One of the best for the basic settings is from Robin Wong.

By the way, if you are considering the E-M1 Mark ll I am assuming that you are looking for a top of the line body and this is an awesome camera. ;-)

can only be navigated using wheel spins and button clicks, despite the rear LCD being a Touchscreen. That in itself can be frustrating, especially when you are changing settings diagonally opposite in the menu layout.

The Menu is completely in monochrome, so no colour cues to help you remember what's where.

You need to work with it (a lot) and get to know it.

The menu system isn't very good and it's astonishing Olympus continues to crank out cameras with poor menus but I've seen plenty of bad menu systems on other cameras (e.g., Sony) and haven't found it to be that big of a deal.

I just spent a few years with a Nikon D7100 (bye, bye...). I've had my EM-1.2 for less than a week and I've just started to customize it. The menu systems is no worse than Nikon's and it's better than my LX-7. I will say that I'm not a big fan of the Olympus manual though.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good book for the 1.2? I had a good one for my D7100 and would love to have the same type of companion to the manual.

Cheers,

I agree as wel. I have am E-M10 Mark II, but I have not found the menu to be overly complicated. Then again I am in IT and use Linux for an OS so not much will really 'scare me'.

so long as you don't try to use it as if its another make of camera

My biggest problem to start with (and I'm guessing that of most who complain) is that I tried to use my EMs as if they were my canons - they aren't the same

Read the manual and work though it with the camera alongside and it makes complete sense and you will have the camera under control in about 15 minute

Don't read the manual and try to set it up "Like my other camera" and you will curse and swear for a week :)

I agree with all that Martin writes above.

David Thorpe has one for the menu system. Also, Gary Friedman has one in the works.

Depends on your Rubic Cube skill level, ie 3, 4 , 5 or higher!

The E-M1 MkII has a very robust menu system due to the many different customizations the camera provides. It is as complex as it needs to be, but no more.

Of course, when learning the E-M1 MkII menu, it helps to have used other Oly gear in the past. I started with the E-30 ten years ago and have used about a dozen Oly models since that time and leading up to the E-M1 MkII. In each step along the upgrade path, the menu system didn't change too terribly much as various features were added and other selections were refined.

If you are making the switch from another brand, then obviously, the learning curve will take a bit longer, however there is nothing inherently wrong with the Oly menu system, it's just something to learn.

I don't believe anyone who reads the manual with an open mind, and actually takes the time to learn the reasoning behind the menu's arrangement will have any problem with the menu system on the E-M1 MkII (or any other current Oly camera).

Give it a try. You will love it.

a couple reviewers most will review Canon/Nikon more regularly and everyone jumps on the menu complexity yet it's as complex as it needs to be for the feature set.

anyone using it in a semi pro, pro or even serious amateur will work it out pretty quick due to practice and really seriously it takes a non regular user a bit longer to find the item they want... big deal
