I have a bit of a conundrum. I want a camera that follows me everywhere-- not a heavy dslr with a set of L lenses-- whether that be while I'm traveling, with friends and family, or even at school (I'm a college student).

(IM NOT SELLING MY DSLR). I just want a small point and shoot type of camera with advanced capabilities.

What would you all recommend?

I want to spend under 450.

I've thinking of these:

Leica x1 (I can get one for exactly 450)

rx100 mark iii (500, a bit of a stretch because most in this price range is already pretty used).

lumix lx100 (great camera, but it is a little bulky).

rx100 Mark I. (I can get this for a solid 160).

used g7x mark ii for around 500.

The RX100III pretty much defines the segment; the Leica has the edge on image quality so long as you only need the one focal length (the Ricoh GRII would be cheaper,) but the RX is definitely the whole package.

You might also consider a used Nikon 1 V2 with the 10-30mm kit lens. That's going for between $300 and $350 on eBay. Sure, the sensor is small (similar in size to RX100), but the image quality is surprisingly good. And you can get the FT1 adapter to use your FX/DX Nikkors with it, which is fun.

Here's a sample taken with that combo:

Used Canon G15 or G16. And you'll have plenty of money left over.

I had the Sony for a while, switched to the Coolpix A. Unfiltered DX sensor from the D700, fixed 28mm lens that is very good, very pocketable, usedmifmyou can find em for around $300 in the states at B&H or on the Fred Miranda forums. It has video but not really, af is not the fastest, but is a very simple and easy to use that gets you DX sensor images with little fuss.

If you need zoom or video, the Sony is obviously a better choice. By point and shoot, I am addressing compacts. I dont have much use for stuff between pocket size and dslr. The Coolpix covers most my needs so I have never looked at M43 or the larger 1" sensor rigs.

NONE OF YOUR CAMS MENTIONED ARE IN THE "BUDGET" AKA LOW COST CATEGORY. THRY ARE ALL HIGH END COMPACT NOT P&S.

The use of upper case is considered to be "shouting."

Unless the poster's "caps lock" is stuck it is considered to be rude.

I second this reco. I shoot primarily canon and micro 4/3, but i really love my Coolpix A. if you're cool with the fixed 28mm lens, its a highly capable camera. Also makes great compact second/third camera.

Lots of good choices. Someone in this thread mentioned the G15 or G16. It's surprisingly good and has a usefully longer lens. You could also consider the very good Fuji X-30 which has a little bigger sensor.

My choice was the G7X II to replace my G15. I tried an RX100 (first version) and just never managed to like the thing (controls, menus, weak IS, and the AF left something to be desired in low light. I did try measuring the effect of IS and found it to be just over 2 stops at both wide and tele.

The RX100 might be ok, the price is good.

For a new Camera the G9X II is he only option I would choose, it the only thing that fits in my pockets and it's only $430 right now. When I shot it, the IQ looked great. Looks like Canon out a good lens on it.

So...not a budget camera, although getting one that is no longer expensive and by virtue of having been used, now falls into budget-land, no?

All we know you want is smaller and lighter. So lots of choices. I'd go for something that maybe also supplies you with something else besides those qualities, something else your current DSLR also lacks. And that could be waterproofness, wifi, 4k video, hackability (Canon), etc etc. That might help narrow the choice down, and still give you high IQ, small size, and be decently priced on the used market. I got a small little waterproof rugged camera for similar reasons, and that I could just leave in the car. But it's been fun to use when I need to take photos in tidepools and streams.

Hi,

The camera is not really pocket size.

You should look at the Sony A5000 it is small and you can change the lens. You can get an adapter and use your lenes you now have.

They are under $400.00 on sale sale now.

I see I typed D700, its D7000.

If only it were FF!

I would get the LX100.

Or a ratty old Olympus PEN or Panasonic GF camera with the 20mm 1.7 lens.

What about a Ricoh GR with a bitingly sharp APSC sensor and 28mm F2.8 lens in a tiny magnesium package. I love mine.
