Disaster in Red

I've only just got my 1Ds a week ago, but when I took her out for a test drive in Green Park the other day, I discovered that the colour red is a disaster! Details are clipped and gone forever, and the saturation in the reds seems a bit much (granted, I've used matrix 2 - but it happens on other settings as well). Is it just me? Have I not set the magic CF/PF or something? Or is there even something wrong with my camera? Anyone familiar with the phenomenon?

Here's what shocked me:

The flowers are just across from Buckingham Palace and they certainly didn't look like in my pictures! I've had a similar problem with my old Sony F707, which has luckily been rectified to a great deal on the F717.

how did you process the images? Were you shooting in raw mode?

Try CM 4 or 5 when shooting bright reds or oranges. This is also one of those times I shoot RAW. Vivid reds can be very difficult for some reason.

It looks like the image might be over-exposed by about 1/2 stop or so.

Hey Steve--

you were right, it was one stop overexposed-- but a real life saver was the second test I've done in Finsbury Park with another red flower field:

With spot-on exposure, the JPEG image was just like my example above, reds go completely overboard and details are clipped. Lucky for me, the RAW file caputred it all. I got the best results on these reds with matrix 4 and 5 and shall keep that in mind for the future. Geez, what a shock in the first place though.

Even with an overexposed image, matrix 4 still retains the detail in the reds. Phew!

I never use Matrix-3 for this reason (1D) , it goes into Sony 707 mode with the reds :( .. there is no probs with RAW of course as with FVU etc, you can choose the matrix at will or even all of them for comparisons if you wish

My Nikon D1X does this as well. I always dial down exposure by at least 1/2 stop whenever I have saturated reds in the picture. Just one of those things one needs to know.

I noticed the same thing. Using the low-chroma color-matrix (5) worked for me on my 1D.
