Just got myself a 7D mark II as a sidekick to my 5D mark IV. I've been a bit worried about mixing fullframe and APS-C (especially on paid work and stressed weddings), but figured I could use the extra reach when my 5D4 is a bit short.

So far I am really enjoying it (new gear honeymoon) and I must say that the files are really nice. No, it's not fullframe and yes, noise is not in the same league, but for daylight and low-ish ISO... awesome files with pleasing punchy colors. Functionwise it handles very much like the 5D mark IV. They are almost identical.

All in all - a great camera.

Not a review this, just some 'I like my new gear' words.

Nice how you find pleasure in various tools for various tasks, there are no super camera to rule them all as there are always pros and cons.

If anything waiting for the mytical 6D mkII myself, almost like a 5D mkIV but smaller and cheaper - sounds like a winner if true. You already have all bases covered as far as I can see :)

i am worried that you might mis some photography shooting style if you dont have the

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II..

i would just go today and get it and then you are all set

Yea...If they could just make it lighter, I would get two of them ;-)

The controls between the two seem very nearly identical. Is it pretty easy to switch from one to the other? Any differences that stand out? All I noticed was the change in the ting lever near the joystick.

I have been using 7D2 since it came out and recently purchased 5D4. These cameras are basically IDENTICAL in terms of control. If you know how to use 7D2 then you know how to use 5D4. I think the only major new features in 5D4 are:
  • touch control
  • WIFI feature - the only significantly useful feature for me (not very good though, in my opinion)
  • cropping - I really like that feature even though I don't normally edit my images in-camera
  • Dual-pixel feature
  • Video features
  • an extra control button which you can customize
  • I think 5D4 provides more ways to customize the camera...
Otherwise, 7d2 and 5D4 are basically the same cameras in terms of control.

That is a HUGE plus for me. Thanks!

I am actually thinking of posting a thread about my experience with 5D4 after using 7D2. do you think it is something that could be of interest ?

I'm already convinced! But it sounds like the 7D2 would make an excellent backup camera or second camera to use with a 5Div, since the control layout is the same. Many photographers wouldn't be able to switch between two different control layouts very easily.

If you are going from 5d4 to 7d2 then the controls for 7d2 will look exactly the same.

The only feature that I found to exist in 7d2 and not in 5d4 is the digital compass. I will go out on a limb and say that is not going to be the showstopper for most photographers.

I did not compare the manuals page by page so there could be more...

Amazing pictues , which lens are you using on the 7dm2 ? I have the 400mm f5.6 and pictures aren't sharp as these are...

I agree...

I shot an event last night with the 5D4 and 7D2. I thought it would be weird in the beginning to mix fullframe with crop (I've always used two fullframes) but it wasn't weird at all. In fact, it felt very natural - much thanks to the bodies and handling being very similar.

The color output is different though (the 7D2 profiles have a lot more saturation default) so getting a colorchecker might be good if you're picky and want consistent output.

Having almost identical cameras is certainly very useful. My "event" was a trip to Disney few weeks ago with both cameras and it was great! 7D2 was for shooting fast action, and 5d4 was for low-light/snapshots. I loved having the same batteries.

Thank you for the suggestion about the color output. I normally use the default Standard settings and I assumed the profiles are identical in both cameras. I took a quick look at the in-camera settings and they appear to be the same.

I tried setting the time in both cameras using GPS auto update. I was hoping this approach would set the time to be identical in both cameras up to milliseconds. That did not happen: for some reasons, the times differ by few seconds. any ideas why GPS time would not be the same?

I assume it is Canons ambition to keep the color character roughly the same by using their generic profiles, but the truth is that very few models are similar. The 7D2 has a distinct color punch, especially in the reds and orange compared to 5D4 (both using Standard). It's not entirely down to the profiles either. The sensors could react differently to different light and the design of the color filter array might have an impact also.

My theory is that the main 7D2 target is sports and wildlife where lots of bright, punchy color generally is wanted. Whereas the 5D4 is more studio and portrait-oriented where most users ask for a bit more neutral startingpoint. Colors can always be added and tweaked later.

Just a therory, but my observation and experience with 7D and smaller model-series is that the profiles are generally more "color pleasing".

Not all see this though. It depends on personal taste and how we react to different colors.

GPS is awful in my 7D2. Very slow and it kills battery life. So I never use it. One possible reason for the discrepancy is that Canon only polls the GPS every few seconds, in order to save battery life. But it should still be millisecond accurate, so I suppose it's a software bug.

I love the option in 5D4 to sync the camera time with your smartphone. I wish I could do with 7D2. So far, the best way to sync the times in both cameras seems to be via EOS utility where you can update the time using PC clock.

In general, I happen to have a very positive experience with GPS in my 7d2. I use GPS in my 7D2 all the time and I don't see a very dramatic impact on my batteries, as long as I use the original batteries. I've taken thousands of pictures on one charge with GSP on. I usually set the GPS interval update on 10 seconds which helps to save the battery life.

The GPS on 5D4 seems to work better than on 7D2- unless I am imagining things (could be the placebo effect due to $3200 price tag). I was surprised to see geo tags on some of my 5d4 images taken inside a building.
