Interesting thread. I'm currently in the process of buying A7Rii and as own lots of EF lens, the adapter is must for me and a big part of the decision to finally ditch Canon.

What about Fotodiox Fusion Smart adapter? It's $100 and I've read it also has pretty decent AF and meta-info support.

Is Metabones the only respectable firmware upgrade capable adapter on the market?
I just received the Sigma MC-11 today which is firmware upgrade capable. Thus far, it's worked well without issue whereas the MB was problematic for me and is on its way back to my dealer. It seems to work well for some though. If possible, is there a dealer near you where you could test the A7rii with a given adapter? If not, might be worth a call to whomever you plan on making your purchase from.
Thanks. Nice to know that Sigma MC-11 has USB port. I feel it'd important to know that they can provide updates, though nothing is guaranteed, of course.

Unfortunately, the closest big camera shops in the area are in NYC and it's a 2 hour drive for me. I usually rely on Amazon as my test ground. They always have excellent customer service and I rely on their no questions asked return policy if the product does not work for me. With fast Prime shipping and now standard Sunday deliveries I also don't have to wait long.

Will definitely give MC-11 a try. But please also report back your impressions. Especially in the dim light and at the extreme telefocus for Canon/Sigma/Tamron zoom lens.

Make sure to update with the latest firmware on both A7r II and Metabones IV adapter. Many EF lenses especially the new ones work very well thru Metabones IV adapter. You will read many owners said so. It's just a mainstream opinion. You might have a faulty IV adapter.

My Canon EF lenses work very well on A7 II thru Metabones IV-T adapter, AF fast and accurate.

A note to those experiencing issues with this MB adapter.

Just bought a new A7R2 with a Metabones Canon EF to E T adapter (MK IV). Been having a lot of trouble with this adapter and my L-Series glass as well as Tamron SP 15-30 2.8 (Canon MT). Losing aperture control..shows f-- , locking up, freezing, shutting down etc etc. Works intermittent and getting more frustrated by the day, tried updating the firmare, cleaning/checking contacts and more.
Been using the Metabones on my A7R2 for a year now, it works flawlessly with the 2.8/15-30mm Tamron... AF works fast and precisely, none of your problems occured so far. Only with the Tamron 70-300 VC, the AF is a real PITA from about 150-300mm.

I think your Adapter may be faulty.

Sorry to hear of your problems. My MB4 works fine on my A7R. I also had a dud MB4 for EF to MFT. MB support were a little slow in dealing with it. Each e-mail exchange took. A couple of weeks. However they sent a replacement one, once they were satisfied the first one was faulty.

Slow response over the Spring Festival in China is like slow response over Christmas in Parts of Europe.

The main issue seems to be that technical problems go to Engineering and it depends on how busy they are.

On the other hand MB upgrade the firmware every couple of months and they act on suggestions for improvements.

A few comments:

The MC-11 is 25 grams lighter, slimmer (has no tripod attachment foot) and cheaper than the Metabones IV.

The Metabones has a nicely made Arca Swiss compatible tripod foot (can be a definite advantage, depending on the lenses you're using). It also has 2 different operating modes which can be used, according to lenses or shooting situations.

The only "incompatibility" issue I've found is a Conurus modified Contax N Zeiss 24--85, which on the MB will occasionally jam or lose AF. Works fine on the MC-11. All the Canon lenses I've tried had no issues on either.

Other differences tend to be slight. Theoretically many lenses will give eye AF with the MB in advanced mode (never used it myself). Some lenses seem to be a bit snappier with one adapter or the other, but nothing major. The only other usability difference I noticed is with the long tele-zooms (70-200, 100-400) with the 1.4x extender, where the MB seems to do better in poor light.

(Have used at least 10 Canon lenses on the adapters, from relatively old ones like the 100-300 L to fairly recent ones (latest 70-200 & 100-400 L)

Could very well be, though I'll stick with Sigma and see how that goes

Defective possibly, yes...that is very possible...in this day and age of mass production, anything is possible. However, my dealer didn't hesitate to call me and alert me to the fact that they had another client experience the very same issues. For them, it was enough to advise me against the MB IV and steer me towards the MC-11.... I do enough business with this dealer to accept their verdict and suggestion based upon my recent experience.

btw... stated in my postings, *all firmware had been updated*. Nonetheless, I now have the Sigma, and thus far...no problems.

I do recognize that the majority seems to have no problems using this setup...which is why I went with this combo initially.

Happy to know that should others have similar issues that there's options.

Metabones works fine on mine too i will however in time move to native Sony...now there ramping up Lens production all i need now is a proper FE 600mm and I'm good to go....

Forgive my ignorance on this question, but does either the Metabones or the MC-11 provide AF, including eye AF, that is equivalent in all respects to a native lens? Thanks.

Just got back from shooting as a nor'easter was blowing through the area and swapping out lenses...no issues. As for the tripod mound, by 70-200 and the 300 have they're own mounts. The only other heavy lens I have is Tamron 15-30... I don't expect that to be an issue.

What about Fotodiox Fusion Smart adapter? It's $100 and I've read it also has pretty decent AF and meta-info support.

Is Metabones the only respectable firmware upgrade capable adapter on the market?

Once the weather clears up a bit Ill get back out. Really do want to try this out with my 300 2.8

Not sure how the mc-11 works compared to native but I do know it only works with sigma lenses.

MB works with any lens but it's very limited to a small area near the center which limits composition option thus is of little use to me most of the time. :/

As I don't have native lens, hard for me to answer that....and I've yet to try all AF modes...perhaps someone else who has or tried this setup will chime in.

If I were you, I would skip the Fotodiox and get the MC-11 or Metabones. My limited experience with the Fotodiox was less than stellar.

Seems like a year ago, there were reports of firmware freezing with the MB, where it would require removal of the lens from the adapter or camera, can't recall which, and then restarting the camera. Often called "crashes".

Thats what motivated me to buy the MC-11. Then it seemed like most of the MB problems went away and customers were generally happy with them.

I have seen several comments that the MC-11 has a tighter bayonet fit with the camera than does the metabones adapter. I've often wondered whether machining tolerances could have caused some of the problems reported with intermittent crashes. But its pure conjecture on my part.

I've used my MC-11 without difficulty of any kind with the Canon 85 f1.8 and a Canon 17-40. The MC-11 has provided quick phase focusing in both AFs and AFc modes, and at f 4/f5.6, have gotten incredibly sharp images out of that 85 lens. The 17-40 i've sent back for other reasons and recently purchased a FE 16-35 which i'm happy with.

I wonder if that is one of the reasons MB released Mark V of their adapters. I know they added weather sealing and support for heavier lens, but they could also use this opportunity to firm up their manufacturing tolerances.
