I dug out my xm1 today to do some partial colour stuff. OK it has no viewfinder but to be honest it is such a breeze to use and shooting low is just so easy with the flip up screen. Shame they discontinued it because it`s a match for the other fuji sensors.

It can add that little bit extra to mono.

My wife likes it for the same reasons. With the XF27mm it fits into the pocket.

It` a great little camera with images in j peg that need very little work. I can see why your wife likes it. I sometimes put the 23mm on and the IQ is really good.

Happy new year

My first Fuji, and second digital ILC was the X-A1, which is the exact twin to the X-M1 except for the Bayer rather than the X-Trans sensor. It was my second digital ILC and I bought it because of the little advertised feature that allowed me to lock all of the buttons on the rear. It was a knee jerk reaction to my first digital ILC, a Panasonic GX7, because I was constantly accidentally pressing rear buttons and moving the rear command dial. At first I thought it was me and my lack of experience with digital cameras but, I later found out that a lot of people had the same problems with the GX7.

Except for the lack of a viewfinder, the X-A/X-M series are nice little cameras. The plastic body is pretty heavy duty and well made and coming from the GX7, I didn't miss having a mode dial instead of the traditional Fuji shutter speed dial. For me, the lack of a viewfinder became a deal breaker because I had to use my reading glasses to see the LCD clearly. After a while reading glasses on, reading glasses off gets old. There were also times when the X-A1 was difficult to use in bright sunlight because the LCD would be washed out. I wound up trading in the X-A1 for an X-E1.

Sometimes I look at my X100T and think about how fantastic it would be if Fuji made a version with the XF lens mount instead of the fixed 23mm lens; especially with the new f2.0 lenses available.

I agree. I have used mine more than any other of my cameras particularly when wanting to travel light. It's an excellent set up with the 18 or 27. Thought the X-70 might replace it for me - but it has'nt.

Best wishes. Alan

Did a test with the camera on a mount in my van shooting Hd video and was pleasantly surprised how well it coped using the 18mm lens so that opens up a new door. I don`t miss the viewfinder as much as I thought I would although obviously with a tele lens/zoom it might be more of a problem.

links to a few more images shot using the partial colour.

Yes it works a treat. Some lovely shots there Dave.
Thanks

I wonder if any of the other models can do partial colour?

Dave

Found this site with lots of xm1 images, well worth a look

BTW I have the grips with my xm1`s, makes so much difference to handling and has the arca swiss tripod mount built in. Similar to this one

I bought one of these little beauties secondhand late last summer to use with the body cap toy lens. I had so much fun with it that about a week later I added the 27mm, also used. I had been resisting that lens because it doesn't have an aperture ring, but paired with the X-M1's minimal controls it seems to work perfectly. This combination is now my favorite pocket camera for casual street and walkaround, and also my go to "second camera" to carry alongside another body with a more specialised lens on it. I'm even thinking of buying the upcoming Lensbaby Trio for more toy lens fun with my Pocket Rocket.

If you had told me six months ago I would have been so crazy about a camera with no viewfinder, I wouldn't have believed you.

OK, I only have an xe1 and xpro1 so they must have added the partial colour to the later cameras.

Dave

The X-E2 and X-T10 can both do partial colour so I guess they all do.

Regards Alan
Just couldn`t resist it, having a viewfinder for the longer lenses plus all the other addons with the lower price and the cashback I went for a late Christmas present and ordered a X-T10. I have always been happy with the IQ from the 16million pixel sensor and combine this with my 23 1.4, 35 1.4,14 2.8 I`ll be looking for more partial colour shots in the new year. Hoping that I can use the advance position to lock those colours in place. I must say reading reviews the camera sounds too good to be true for the money.

It's a great camera and my prediction is that you will have quite a lot of fun with it, especially with your nice collection of lenses. Mine is a charmer with just the 35mm f/1.4 and my new Christmas present 60mm f/2.4.

There`s a name I`ve not seen for a while ..

Hi Dave . No idea why they ditched the idea of a cheap XTrans cam after the first version (the XE is up to Mk3 now) - the XE3 looks exceptionally interesting as a RAW camera, looks like it could be a pocket D7200 which takes lovely Fuji glass Image wise !! it`ll beat the XT2 in most RAW converters for detail

in reality I guess an XM2 or 3 is pretty irrelevant in the UK with the flood used XE1s, XPro1s floating about but not everyone lives in the UK or wants a used camera .. the XT10 and older XEs are better value new than any XM could be .

Hi Adam

Yeh! long time no talk.

I still am into photography but had a couple of years shooting 4k video plus several heart attacks. I`m a lot better now but can`t carry the heavy gear around. I had an X-T10 delivered today (you probably read the thread re I like shooting the partial colours) I didn`t realise that the X-T10 did partial colours or I might have grabbed one earlier. I must say after just a few hrs playing with it it is a little gem, me thinks we are going to get on just fine. I`ve been shooting with X-M1`s which are great little cameras but of course during the winter with the low sun there are plenty of times when the evf will come in handy and having the advance filters for the partial colour on that top dial has put a big smile on my face. As you know there aren`t many cameras and makes that I haven`t tried over the years including some of the most expensive but I don`t think I can remember picking up a new camera and feeling so at one with like this fuji. Luckily I have some of the better primes so watch this space.

With the cashback makes this a real good buy in my book, Well done fuji.

Dave

Great to hear you`re OK and past the heart probs .. I picked up an XT2 a month ago to replace my M-4/3 stuff as compact silent event camera - the combination of Capture one Finally getting decent results from X-Trans (I`d have gone Fuji years ago if they`d stuck withy proper sensor filter arrays and wanted an XT1 with the D7100 chip in at the time) and the jump to 24Mp made it a no brainer.. it`s no FF Nikon that`s for sure (D800E main work cam) but it`s as good and practical as APS-C gets for anything bar sports (where the D500 rules) ..

Blimey, just been setting this camera up!!! have things come on in leaps and bounds or what!!!

At this rate I`ll be selling my FF canon and lenses and buying the X-T2 to get the 4k :-)

The X-T10 is some camera for sure for the money.

I`ve been more or less concentrating on passing my amateur radio licences and purchasing some decent Icom radios and things have more or less passed me by a bit as far as cameras go. Having said that, amateur radios have come on in leaps and bounds lately. anyone in the market for a amateur radio at around £1k should look at the Icom 7300.

all this learning at my age must be keeping my brain fairly active.

it is - I briefly had a used XE2 kit (which got me the 18-55 and to test the water again in Fujiland) and with the latest Firmware which takes it to XT10 spec, it was a massive upgrade from the XE1 (XM1 level AF etc) in AF especially , even my G1X Mk1 shamed the XE1 in low light and that`s sad ..

The XT2 takes all this to another level and adds real croppable resolution, even better high ISO performance, State of the art EVF, Phase detect AF that works, a deal-winning Canon like AF point selection Nipple (you know, like the 1DS Mk2 had 12 years ago) , two card slots (essential for my Job - Listening Sony ?) weather sealing (same again) and those fantastic "lifted from the Oly-EM1" Pen top dial locks for the dedicated dials, the ISO one is the most useful........ Oh and it`s a Fuji that actually shoots *better* Video than an old iPhone 4S ..

Ham rigs are best bought used, they depreciate very quickly and by loads ... save the cash for an XT2 - LOL ........... after enjoying some quality time with the 10 of course, the great thing about the 10 is that it`ll make a great second body with similar ergonomics and is a bit smaller

It is an interesting question why Fuji didn't make either the X-Pro1 or X-Pro2 the size of the X100 series. The X-E1 and follow-ups prove that the size is not the obstacle (for example, lens to film plane), and the X100s show that the optical viewfinder can be shrunk as well.

I loved my X-Pro1 and still love my X-Pro2, but I wouldn't mind it shrunk a bit more...
