After I've heard so much positive about the Pen F's Monochrome Mode, I am wondering if I couldn't just try to replicate the settings and put it to my E-M1's or E-M10ii's Myset.

Has anyone tried this?

You can get close but not exactly the same.

I cannot find a link but I once ran across someone asking the same thing. The advice was:

Monotone mode, +2 contrast, low-key graduation

This is what I've been shooting and quite like the effect, and it has been commented on as emulating Leica's b+w mode well.

You have to setup the graduation in the menu system, the other pieces you can set in the SCP interface.

Menu -> Camera1 -> Picture Mode -> Monotone -> graduation

I've not found a settings combination in the mono modes of either my E-M1 or E-M5II that can replicate the Pen F Mono Profile 2 with film grain off. If someone comes up with one, I'd go for it. But so far....the Pen F profiles are special to the Pen F only, IMO.

I tried with EM10 (and GM1, various Nikon dSLR and V1) but to no avail. So I bought a PEN-F because I like monochrome since my film days.

We buy lenses for their FOV and unique characteristics. The PEN-F is one of the few bodies I bought specifically for its Creative Dial and I've been using the Mono (and Color) Profile quite a bit since.

Yes, you can easily set the monochrome profile to a myset on an OM-D... but that's not the same as the Pen F monochrome mode. What's the difference? I'm glad you asked!

Monochrome Profile

If you go into settings > shooting menu 1 > picture mode > monochrome, you can see there are a few options. Contrast, sharpness, B&W filter (red/green/yellow/etc), Pic Tone (B&W, sepia, etc).

Pen F Creative Dial Monochrome

This is far more advanced than the simple profiles on OM-D bodies.

Rather than setting up a B&W filter in the menu settings, you can do it at the flick of a switch while shooting to choose the filter color that works best for the shot you're taking, and you can choose the filter intensity. Scroll the front dial to choose the color. Scroll the rear dial to choose the intensity. It's fast and it's as intuitive as using the dials to choose aperture and shutter speed.

You can also use the dials to choose vignette (black or white). Quick & intuitive.

And you can use the dials to set highlight & shadow control.

You cycle between B&W filter, vignette, highlight/shadow control using the left/right lever.

Also, unique to the Pen F Creative Dial monochrome is the option to use film grain & choose the intensity of it.

Aaaaaand, I should mention that the Pen F has the basic monochrome profile found in OM-D bodies too, but I never use it since I'd rather use the creative dial's advanced monochrome.

...but if all you want is to be able to shoot in B&W, the OM-D monochrome profile will do the job. It's what I used on my EM1 and I like it a lot, but I bought a Pen F specifically for the more advanced options with the creative dial. And I love it!

For me, it isn't just about the settings. What makes the monochrome mode in the Pen F so powerful is the ability to flick the lever and use the dials to quickly make changes while setting up a shot. Spin the dials & see the changes live in the EVF. It's totally different than just putting the camera in B&W. I think it's pretty amazing.

It can't be done.

The Pen-F has JPEG modes and options not available in other cameras. Specifically, it offers stronger B&W filters, and more accurate previews.

You'd have to shoot RAW, and add B&W filters in post.

Try shooting raw and using the Nik effects in post processing.
Been there, done that ........won't match the Pen F. Some may like it better, but it will be different. Me I prefer the Pen F profiles and only use Nik when I've forgotten to switch the Pen F over to Mono on the creative dial.

I like this a lot.. Pen F Mono Profile 2, film grain off. Tried RAW and replicate with Nik, but failed.

Or this..

Very Nice shots Gary.

If you convert the RAW using OV3 can you go into the Mono Profiles and change the settings as you can with most other settings for ORFs?

Or this..

Unfortunately I have not found that OV3 provides these Pen F profiles, at least when I last tried to find them. There are some simple Mono settings that can be applied, although if I'm dealing with the raw file, I prefer the Nik conversion.

My pen f will be here Monday but your method might be best because we can use that in RAW correct ? Then process on the computer to jpg using the cameras settings is that right ?

If you use the dial for the B&W jpgs can you also shoot in RAW + jpg ?

Yes, I always shoot the RAW+jpg when using the Creative Dial/Mono. Best of both worlds.

Thank you guys that sounds perfect for me then. I have been shooting RAW for so long that it scares me not to have a RAW file. :) Yet I can see some real advantages to have a B&W jpg from the camera because so far from what I see they look amazing. My PEN f will be here tomorrow so I will be trying it out.

Good luck and have fun with your PEN-F. At the risk of repeating, here's Robin Wong's review of the Creative Dial - https://robinwong.blogspot.my/2016/02/olympus-pen-f-review-part-2.html

"There are three profile settings in the camera, Monochrome Profile 1, 2 and 3. The Monochrome Profile 1 is the option for you to fully customize. The Monochrome Profile 2 simulates a black and white film (Kodak Tri-X, maybe?) and Monochrome Profile 3 simulates Infrared Red Black and White film."

gary0319 was one of the first PEN-F owners who brought up the (Mono-Profile 2) Grain setting(off/low/med/high). I adjust this setting depending on situation.

Only thing to note about this is that if you have the camera set to RAW only and then use the creative dial it will switch to RAW+JPEG, but the JPEG won't be the best quality. To have this you need to set the camera to RAW+JPEG all the time even if you aren't using the creative dial.

Hopefully this will be fixed with a firmware update.
