New D200 When???

is this true? nikon won't sell any more bodies to fuji? so there
will be no nikon based S3? what du you know?
They'll probably have to curry Canon's favor so that they can make
an S3. Otherwise, they may have to resort to making their own lens
mount and lens line. Think of using a 12-megapixel honeycomb ccd
sensor with a purely flourite/UD glass! The pictures will be true
to life and outstanding!

It has been mentioned that the D100 prices have dropped over 20 to 25% in Austrailia at many reputable dealers and stores. This could be a sign of an official international price drop to come.

I never could understand why Nikon sold bodies to Fuji for a digital SLR that is in direct competition to the D100. If they are going to stop doing so for the next model it makes sense, doesn't it?

S2 owners buy Nikon glass. When they upgrade they will want to use their existing lenses so, they buy the D200. Simple!

My short answer to this is that I have talked to Nikon dealer who says that his friend who works at Nikon says no new D100....but who is to say.

I will also say that there is a reason why Nikon is introducing so many new DX lenses and that is that they see a future of "cropped" sensors being the direction to go ...at least for now.

Everyone with Nikon Glass will either sell it (probably not) or they'll move to Nikon Bodies.

Why wouldn't Nikon sell bodies to Fuji?

By doing so, they make money selling both Nikon and Fuji cameras.
If Fuji had to use another base body (e.g. Canon), Nikon would lose
money. That doesn't sound like a wise business decision, does it?

The problem was that the S2 wasn't produced in high enough quantity for it to matter and that's a big reason why Nikon's D100 was the number one seller last year.

The D100 isn't bad but some of us were willing to go with either depending on which we could get our hands on first.

Canon don't seem to be keen on licensing their system out - no one else is using the Cnon mount, and they make things quite difficult even for compatible lenses.
I don't think they will let Fuji use their mount.

If Nikon are getting reluctant to let Fuji use their mount, then Fuji are in a bind.

For starters, those who use Fuji S1 and S2's have Nikon glas, so if Nikon withdraw their mount then it makes more sense for these users to go to Nikon rather than buy new glass to use Fuji with another mount, so effectively they would have an installed base of nil.
It is also not trivial to design a DSLR,and Fuji have never done so.
It would take them awile to equal Canon and Nikon's experience.

Perhaps their best bet would be to tie in with another second-tier player, Pentax or Minolta, and do joint development.

It was concerns such as these, the lack of a clear migration path, which led me not to buy an S2, although I liked it a great deal.

Where did all this come from? Sounds like idle speculation to me. Nobody has offered more than a "what if".

It is surely in Nikon's interest to have as many F mount cameras out there as possible. The big money is in lens sales - at least according to other forum members.

Don't forget that the F mount is used by Fuji, Kodak and Horseman, all of which add to the number of Nikkor addicts.

I don't follow your logic here. If you buy an S2, use it and enjoy it, why would it matter to you if the Fuji factory exploded. Your S2 would still be working fine. It won't suddenly turn sour because Fuji does or doesn't bring out an S3.

I will need a new camera at some point. I currently shoot around 1500 frames a month, which should give me around 3 years until shutter replacement time.

Digital cameras will also continue to improve for some time, and I certainly don't intend to stick to the same model for ever

I see your point about needing a replacement in 3 years or so, but the possibility that there will be no S3 has no bearing on the S2. It will remain the same camera until it fails.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but I suspect you are thinking that a camera somehow is diminished when a new model comes along.

You misunderstand the Nikon/Fuji relationship. There isn't one. At all.

Fuji buys large quantities of Nikon N80 bodies at wholesale prices. Anyone can do this. Nikon cannot stop them. Fuji reverse engineered enough of the N80 to turn it into S2. That's why it's "Frankenstein's camera", because it's essentially a Fuji digital back and bottom bolted onto a Nikon body.

Nikon, when they made D100, had a lot better ability to go in and modify N80, which is why an N80 can X-sync at 180, while an S2 can only do 125.

If I wanted to build the W2 from a Nikon body, I could do exactly what Fuji does, by the bodies by the 10 thousands, tear it apart, and do whatever I want to it.

Nikon does have some remnants of a working relationship with Kodak, which is why 14n is a bit "smoother" than S2.
