Canon no longer services 1D Mark III - what to do now?

Just got off the phone with Canon support. The 1D Mark III is out of service and they won't even look at it. I want to get my camera cleaned and check - the usual maintenance service. Is there anywhere else that might be able to do that? Again, the camera is fine, no issues, it's just been too long since the last maintenance.

Seems ridiculous. Which Canon service centre is that?

I know here in Oz if I couldn't get Canon to service a camera (even a very old one) I'm sure I could get one of the very good third-party service shops to do it.

Not sure where you, but here in the UK Canon also have several licensed Canon repairers. Maybe you have some where you are? There appear to be quite a few in Europe, maybe have a look under "Repair Centres" on the Canon website and you may find something. I have always found them to be very helpful, even with something that it much more out of date than your camera.

Good luck.

I had heard, in the past, that Canon USA policy is/was to service a product for ten years after the "Discontinued" date, which would mean they would have to stock enough parts to cover that period.

The 1D-3 was discontinued in late 2009, only seven years ago, so it seems "odd" that they'd discontinue service on it "so soon".

Just entered my 1Ds III information for repair online (USA) and got the response:

Repair

Product inspection required for repair cost
(estimate)

Image Sensor Cleaning
$49
(estimate)

Maintenance Service
$129
(estimate)

So maybe you talked with the wrong person about service!

Hmm.. I see the list of services, but when I enter in my serial number I get:

Service is No Longer available for This Product Please be advised that repair service is no longer available for this product. However, in appreciation of your continued loyalty, we would like to fully understand your immediate needs and offer an alternative solution. If possible, Please call us toll-free at 1-866-481-2567 to discuss available options.

Called that number to hear that they won't even do maintenance service. The "available options" were a $60 discount on another DSLR as a reward for my loyalty. I actually laughed at the poor guy on the phone.

Was this after you entered your serial number?

What about TF Camera Repair? They have an excellent reputation. Try giving them a call - worst that can happen is they say "No" as well....

Try precision camera in Connecticut.

Canon is saying it is not interested in taking your money and generating revenue. That's rather odd. Toyota gladly services my 20 year-old 1997 4Runner. And I see vehicles older than that in the service bays.

The only thing that comes to mind is that you have a 1D3, which suffers from an eternal bad reputation given the failure-to-focus fiasco of 2007. (I owned a 1D3 and had to send it back three times before it was fixed properly. I sold it shortly after, knowing it would have little residual value.)

The other poster who said he could get service mentioned a 1Ds3, not a 1D3. Perhaps that is the difference, as the 1Ds3 did not suffer from focusing woes.

In the United States, I suggest that people file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, regarding Canon's short support life cycle for products costing thousands of dollars. It simply isn't right for Canon to do that, though it is certainly legal.

The OP has a 1D Mark III, which ended production more than 2 years prior to yours

It seems like, from posts I've read here, that's canon service is now finding about $300 of "other" things that need to be repaired when a camera /lens is sent in for a check over. Just like a car mechanic would. If they don't make parts for your camera they can't replace parts which might be why they won't even look at your camera !

I shoot professionally and never get my cameras "checked and cleaned." If there is a goober on the sensor I clean it myself. If the camera is broken I send it off for repair or replace it.

Personally, I would just use your 1D III until it dies or trade it in for a newer body. While it is annoying that Canon no longer services this pro body, I wouldn't sweat it.
