Sorry! I posted this in the retouching forum, which is the correct place, but given it involves the X-T2 I thought I'd take my chances here as well.

Just purchased a Fuji X-T2 and today I was seeing how Faststone handles the files.

Weird things going on. Jpegs display as normal in thumbnails and full screen at the full 6000 x 4000. In the case of the Fuji RAF files, they are 6000 x 4000 in the thumbnails, but when I open them for a single shot for larger viewing, they automatically somehow downsize to 1920 x 1280 (2.46mp).

I shot 2 test shots, one in lossless compressed and the other in uncompressed just to see if that made any difference when opening a file. No, both the compressed and uncompressed behave the same way.....auto downsize to 1920 x 1280.

Interestingly though, while the megapixels are down, both the compressed and uncompressed maintain their original mb size. The sample shot I took gave me 23.4mb for the lossless compressed and 48.1mb for the uncompressed. So I suppose that is telling me that all of the original information is still there in both files.

Why is Faststone doing an auto downsize and not allowing me to open the RAF files at full 6000 x 4000???? Perhaps I've got some setting stuffed up.

Is it safe to upsize/resize them back to their full 6000 x 4000 and still maintain the file integrity?

My Nikon D810 NEF files where heaps bigger than these Fuji files and I never had any auto downsizing issues.

Maybe it's just a case that Faststone is not quite there yet when it comes to handling Fuji RAF files.

Again....RAF thumbnails display ok full res, but full screen opens up at 1920 x 1280 while still maintaining all the original mb information.

I'm lost, hope some genius out there can help.

Thanks

I can confirm the same behaviour with Fuji XT1 RAF files which also display with FastStone at 1920x1280. A left click merely magnifies that same size a little because the image becomes soft. Strangely though if I do the same with a full size tiff (of the same file) it magnifies to full size and remains sharp. I find it slightly annoying myself. It can be overcome by shooting Raw+fine lge but that's just more stuff to get rid of.

A small price to pay for a very handy browser - free, although I make a small annual donation.

Open Faststone and go to Settings -> RAW and check what it says in "View RAW files in:". Most likely it's set to 'Embedded Preview Image' or 'Half Size'. Make sure it's set to 'Actual Size'.

Faststone shows the embedded JPEG as default for RAW files. And some manufacturers use full size JPEGs embedded (like Nikon and Sigma), some use smaller ones (like Fuji and Panasonic).

You could try setting Faststone to use it's own RAW converter, it's in the settings under RAW, no guarantees on how it does with the Fuji RAW files though.

That's better thanks.

Go to settings, hit Raw tab and choose view actual size. If you leave the viewer screen on "Auto fit (large only)" you can now get full size with the "A" key and fit screen with "0". Alternatively choose actual size in viewer also to open at max. You can also increase/decrease incrementally with the + - keys and auto fit screen with "0" key as you'd expect.

Hi Vic

Thanks for your help, but all that does is magnify the image on the screen, it doesn't change the mp size from 1920 x 1280 back to 6000 x 4000 where it should be. That's what I've found anyway.

Thanks

Thanks for your input. Played around with both 'Half size' and Actual size and they both still open the image in 1920 x 1280, and of course they take a week to open. I'm lost with this one. I've been using Faststone for years, but this has really thrown me.

Perhaps it's just a case of Faststone not being able to decompress Fuji RAF files just yet.

Maybe FastStone needs an update. After swapping settings as above my XT1 raw shows info (hovering at R of screen) as 4952x3288, 24.9mp file. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding you.

Hi Vic

I think it's just a case of Faststone needing to update. I downloaded the latest version 5.9, but I still think it just can't handle the X-T2 yet. With respect, the X-T1 isn't the X-T2 and there maybe some other tweaks to the Faststone program which need addressing.

I just sent an email off to Faststone support to see if they have any answers, but for the moment I'll just shoot Jpegs..............no big deal.

I think you're right about Fuji using smaller Jpegs to view raw files. As mentioned, the Fuji raw files open up at 1920 x 1280. As Vic suggested, pressing the "A" key opens them up in full res 6000 x 4000 (albeit very slowly) and then I just choose "Fit to screen" for viewing. No problem!

Interestingly though, it can only open up uncompressed raw files. I've had no luck opening lossless compressed files, they just go to some crazy white fuzzy multi speckled screen. So it seems that at the moment, Faststone can't "unpack" a compressed Fuji file.

Think I'll just shoot raw + Jpeg and use the Jpegs for viewing reference and delete the raw files I don't need. Pointless loading all the raw files to my computer if I only want 3 keepers out of 100 shots.

That's what I do with XT1 files to save time and space - interestingly XT1 RAW files only take a second or two to fully resolve in FS on my PC.

As a matter of interest how large are XT2 RAW files on average?

In mb terms, the uncompressed sample shot I took in my office was 48.1mb and the lossless compressed was 24.3mb, and that was when the shots were either in 1920 x 1280 (small embedded jpeg) or opened up to full res of 6000 x 4000. The mb size never changed.

And at the end of the day, I still think it's simply a case of Faststone not being able to handle X-T2 files ........just yet. It was always able to open my RAW 36mp Nikon files like lightening. So I think it's just a matter of waiting for an updated version. No big deal as there are always ways around these problems.

Wow. Twice the size of XT1 files (at 24.9mb). Now wonder XT2 raw are slow to open.
Is that 24.9mb uncompressed or lossless compressed? Just curious.
