Nikon @ Photokina or not ??

... Lickity: Poor you.

... There is no reason for camera companies to release products according to someone else's artificial schedule. I prefer that they release models when the model is ready.

Talk about a dismal failure.

I'm a die hard Nikon fan and even I am starting to become despondent when I see what they are producing. It's like they're still targeting the photographers of the 90's with a record on repeat. High fps, higher MP, more focal points. Yeah, that worked for us before, we'll just continue with that. What's your plan for next year? Ah, we'll just add 4MP, another 2fps and another 10 focus points. Great stuff!! Innovation at it's best.

Hi Mr Nikon, this is Mr Nokia. Mr Nokia made a big mistake a couple of years back and we thought it would be good for you to chat.

What surprises me with their approach is they pre-announce an action cam 6 months ago that they probably should have kept quiet about because it would have been a bigger surprise (and announce two more action cams the average user didn't ask for and doesn't care about), and they keep quiet about a mirrorless (if they have one under development) that might prevent current DSLR users from jumping ship if they are considering switching. Who does your marketing strategy? Donald Trump? I know of 2 Nikon users who have switched to Fuji in the last month and another 3 who decided to switch after Photokina because they want to move to mirrorless, don't want to sell their glass, but Nikon hasn't given them alternatives.

How hard would it have been to produce a FF mirrorless with the D750 sensor and a DX mirrorless with the D7200 sensor. They have the AF engines, they have the digital viewfinders, etc. Maybe we might have got a mirrorless with a decent battery life for a change. Plenty of DSLR users might have bought a second mirrorless body which would have stopped them buying a competitors product.

Anyway, rant over, I'm off to find a buyer for my Nikon gear, if it's still worth anything.

I guess the d810 was really a success, no renewal after well over 2 years.

People know what their getting with the 810,New model, New problems.

Wow , what the hell is this crap ? :-) Even though I don't need nor am I interested in handing over any more money to Nikon for any more gear I was really surprised and disappointed that they didn't set-up to the plate and release anything new for the upcoming holiday season,Nothing gets the juices flowin around here like a new body I guess we'll have to wait till early 2017, at least. It'll be pretty quiet around here this holiday season.... :-(

Pretty sad year lens-wise for Nikon. Just one new FX lens this year after 6 new FX lenses in 2015.

Nikon has a real chance to stick it Canon. A refreshed 50mp D8xx could clobber the 5DS R which is pretty low hanging fruit.

There is no real compelling reason to refresh the D750 at this point. Its selling very well and its technology is still up there among the best.

That's why the D500 is shockingly expansive.
Why is it shockingly expensive?

It's a pro body mini D5 with the best ISO performance of any DX/crop cameras.

Yeah and it's still trading blows with its competition; 5DSR and A7R II. Heck it's still ahead of both those cameras in some areas (the 5DSR especially, sans MP), there's not exactly much incentive for Nikon to get the successor out ASAP.

The 5D IV isn't even able to surpass Nikon's two year old cameras. I doubt Sony are much of a concern between now and the time Nikon do actually release their new cameras.
Well said! :-)

This makes a lots sense to me but still why sit on a new release instead of sitting on it just because the you have some good products on the market the competition seems to be churning them out one after another , the whole FX line-up excluding the D5 is over two years old and Nikon could have done a refresh on at least one of them just to keep Nikon out front ....

Is my estimation. Have they heard of a gopro? I listened to their salesman announce these keymission cameras at the expo. Cringey doesn't cover it. His basis for these was something like this:

'you know when you take a picture and then when you get back and look at it, it doesn't give you that same feeling as when you took it, you don't feel like you where there...that's because your image was not 360!'

Not because of the photographer at all...
It seems like Nikon and Canon have a strategy to wait out the market to see what's popular, and then to swoop in and take over by the force of their brand name.

I guess it works most of the time but I have trouble believing it'll work for action cams. I'm an avid skiier and I see a lot - a LOT - of GoPro cameras. I have one myself, it works great. Younger people do not care about the Nikon brand, they'll buy what works. GoPro works well and has a lot of momentum.

+1

The so called "Action Camera" market is now flooded with no-brand products; I'd dare say even GoPro will inevitably face sales pressure in the market place.

And yes, the younger generation doesn't give a hoot about name-brands as long as as the gadget functions accordingly.

This draws parallel with what's happening in the speedlight maket; Canon and Nikon are fast loosing their foot hold to dirt-cheap speedlights from Yongnuo/Meike/Godox.

Actually for what it is the price could have been $2499.00 (US) and it still would have sold out.

...because the thread is about Nikon @ Photokina in 2016, not 'Nikon in all of 2016.'

Although I'd like a more authoritative source, I don't have all day to search:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photokina

The Photokina (rendered in the promoters' branding as photokina) is the world's largest trade fair held in Europe for the photographic and imaging industries. The first Photokina was held in Cologne, Germany, in 1950, and since 1966 it is held biennially in September at the koelnmesse Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre. Many photographic and imaging companies introduce and showcase state of the art imaging products at Photokina.

Nikon had a good year already D5/D500 D3400, many lenses including the 105mm that is looking spectacular for it's use case. The action cameras, we will see, I think that is way too late when you can buy the APAC knock off GoPro's for next to nothing $$.

With Nikon's 100th anniversary next year, I am betting they release a ton of gear starting Jan/Feb and through the year. I expect the rest of the exotic lenses refreshes finish up, we know the DF2 is on the way & there should be the next D8X0, etc. Add in the DL's and that is a nice lineup across the board.

Now that Canon hit Nikon with the M5, we should also see the next Nikon mirrorless try. If it is an upscale of the N1 to 1.7 sensor with the PDAF on sensor with the same frame rates, it could be a great camera. (I can see the marketing, "Mirroless taking Nikon in to the next 100 years", haha!)

I cannot believe how many people have said they are leaving Nikon around here since nothing was released. We are months away from the fun starting...

I don't think it's anything to get up in arms about. Nikon has released cameras after Photokina before so there may yet be something coming this year. Other than Sony, who really unveiled anything at that show anyway DSLR wise? Canon announced and was already shipping the 5D MIV before the show. Perhaps Nikon is taking this opportunity to throw the release schedule they have been on out the window. I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Also, I'm guessing they want 2017 to be a big year for them.

It's kind of a tradition, Iain. With the industry arguably being in a tailspin, with no Nikon 1 "V" camera for years, with the DL cameras delayed and delayed, and doubtless other reasons, users are looking for signs of hope for their choice of brand. Nikon failed to deliver at Photokina.
No new rattles to play with this week.

H'blad X1D did not wait for Photokina. Canon 5D4 did not wait. Nikon DSLRs did not wait. Fuji showed up with a low volume high end kit it will not release for months and there is no pricing or fine print available.

Major manufacturers do not need the bounce of a Euro trade show to get their message out. That time has passed.

A two headed calf in Kentucky generates more press than Photokina.

Well in Nikon's defense they will hopefully not introduce more new bodies until there has been enough advancement in the technology to fully warrant that.

Maybe it has something to do with a perception some have that equipment alone can improve their photography.
