I have been scammed – by this person

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57839111

Having agreed a mutually acceptable price – I offered to make payment by credit card – was informed person did not have facility to accept a CC. Asked person to ship camera to me and on receipt I would make payment – person countered by suggesting I pay half first and on receipt I would pay the balance.

Person was said to be a dentist working in Ilfracombe and suggested I could collect - all sounded to be above board – Once I had agreed and paid the initial half – person disappeared as did my money.

Asked DPreview investigate and was informed they don't actually have access to users' email addresses. All they can tell me is that (s)he has visited DPR from IP addresses in Poland, London and the outskirts of Manchester (near Rochdale).

Scammers are getting increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to get your money - There's no one group of people who are more likely to become a victim of a scam. It's not only the naïve and gullible who fall victim; all of us may be vulnerable to a scam at some time.

As the Internet becomes more complex and we continue to converse with more individuals online, it is difficult to know if people are who they say they are.

Don’t be as trusting and foolish as I have been

Sorry that happened to you. How did your CC company respond? Did you pay through paypal?

I made a bank to bank transfer - the other person had no means to accept any type of credit card - I now feel stupid !!

Live and learn. I sell a lot of RC equipment as RC is another hobby of mine. I only transact with people who accept paypal or USPS money order. What did your bank say about the matter? My father was scammed once and his bank was able to reverse the transaction.

I put up a wanted post a short while back.

I had a "person" for lack of better words proceed to tell me how wonderful his camera was. Low shutter count, exactly what I wanted for a real nice price. I asked a couple of pointed, specific questions, the answers lead me be have a strong feeling this was someone not so honest.

A week or so later, another person answered the same add. this one had very obviously been looking to gain money from me...without sending me anything in return.

Be careful out there. If it sounds too good...it most probably is..!

Bank unable assist - they say at the time my funds were received into the other persons account they had no knowledge or suspicions that this was anything other than a legitimate account. They go on to say the account no longer has any funds remaining and thus they are unable to return my money to me. Surprise - Surprise !!

you could claim it under fraud or you can do so in some countries I believe. Try phoning in a couple of different times or to different departments (eg: customer services and fraud services). Sometimes if you land on the right person he'll be able to refund your money. Its worth a try imo.

Sorry for your loss and thanks for the heads up.

And if number of posts is very low (and/or they only have for sale threads in their history), make sure you only deal with them in person in a very public place (eg: big train stations with CCTV). I wouldn't even advice dealing via paypal or any other remote online means.

Thanks for alerting us. Bank to Bank - offers little protection. A user with 1 post is another big hint of a scammer.

It is so easy when you look back at the little signs.

Sorry man.

Quite.

It sucks that these parasites can get everywhere.

Do look for those little signs. Do be cautious. But don't let them take your trust as well as your money. Most folk on this forum, and elsewhere in the wider World, are decent honest folk.

I was scammed on my first ever internet transaction. When I informed the authorities I was told, rather sternly, "You should know better than to purchase things on the internet!?"

Ahem - that was in about 1997!

I've bought and sold a fair amount of used gear since then without problem. If you ever want help buying something then feel free to ask. I'm UK based.

Sorry about your loss, but you should have been suspicious the moment the seller decided to accept 1/2 and the other 1/2 on receipt. That is too much trust for anybody, and in your statement you also asked the seller to ship the goods and you would make payment on receipt. Now, why would I want to do so with a total stranger if I was the seller?

You responded to a seller with 1 post that could not accept PayPal or CC and sent him cash?

I asked the person to accept payment by means of any credit card - NatWest - MasterCard etc etc - the person said he/she had no means of accepting - so I then said OK - send me the goods and within seven days I shall pay you in full - to help the person know whom I am I gave him/her my private website where it details my career to date and full details where I reside with photos etc etc - that was to give that person confidence that I was bona-fide - it was at this stage the person then proposes the 50-50 split which at the time seemed reasonable but in retrospect was a stupid proposition to accept without obtaining more info of this person - the original offer from this person did say one could come and collect !!

Hey Guys - I made a big mistake- I realise that now - and I'm paying for my mistake

By posting my stupidity I am merely cautioning others to be extra careful

When desire overrules common sense. The only way this could have been more obvious is if his username was ScamU.

I`d be absolutely embarrassed to admit what happened to you.

And, I just can`t be sympathetic. I only hope you learned a lesson that most folks are smart enough to avoid.

I feel for you...I *almost* got scammed on the last purchase I made from the DPR forums. My wife was suspicious from the beginning! Anyway, they asked for the half-now-half-later deal, which I now know is a dead giveaway for a scam. Also, if they don't accept paypal (and NOT as a gift, which removes all protection for the buyer!!), then it's just not worth the risk. No cash deals unless it's in person. Another good deal from a legit seller will surface; we just have to be patient. I hope you can wrestle your cash back from the bank.

NEVER buy from someone who has only one post, a sure sign to be wary

As any successful person will tell you, they have made many mistakes along the way. They will admit that it was the collective insight from bad decisions that taught them invaluable lessons – and how to see opportunities in everything and anticipate the unexpected more quickly. Successful people are transparent enough with themselves and others to admit their wrong doings so that those around them can also benefit from their learnings. They call this wisdom and many individuals lack it – because they are too proud to recognize mistakes as valuable learning moments for themselves and others.

The journey toward earning respect begins the moment we recognize our mistakes and have the integrity and fortitude to utter the words, “I was wrong - I made a mistake"

Incidentally I did not ask or expect your sympathy - it is neither wanted nor needed

In sharing my experience I hope to convey the message - to beware - as all is not as it seems.

Well, I sympathize with you.

I made a very similar mistake last week, after putting up a "Wanted" post in the forums. It all looked dandy and real, including the pictures of the camera (which did not turn up when I google searched them as I was a bit suspicious, but must have been taken from another for sale post somewhere). The red flag that I ignored was when the seller used a different email address to receive the paypal payment.

I'm now out $480, which was already stretching my budget, with a paypal claim on the go, and very mad and embarrassed at myself (I work in IT). It seems like these claims are hit or miss, and the seller has already sent me more bullcrap emails, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Being robbed really sucks, no matter how you put it :-(

Ouch! With something expensive like a used 6D, 50% is quite a chunk of money too lose... That could have been a new lens...

It is a big giveaway that the seller didn't have more than one post.

Actually, it would be a good idea if the For sale and wanted forum was limited to users with a reasonable amount of posts, perhaps 50 or more rather than letting new members post offered in it as many of the people who are offering deals like that have very low post counts. Just my 5 cents worth.

Anyway, I hope that scamming member has been banned from DPR.
