As the question says...would you take a Canon 50 STM as part of your primary kit to shoot a wedding?

The context of the above question is if you have other lenses in your primary kit but don't have a good 50 like for my case - I have a Canon 16-35 f4, 85 f1.8 and 135 f2.

This question is actually related to an earlier thread I started about Canon's 50mm lineup. I know that a lot of people will recommend great lenses like the Art or L...but my current budget can only afford the STM as I will be purchasing the 135.

I don't shoot weddings, but with your kit, I don't think you would use the 50mm a ton. A fast 35mm would probably be used more if you had one.

If you want shots with wide aperture, say for the getting ready bit, the 85mm might be a bit too long, and your 16-35 is too wide and slow, the 50 1.8 may be just the one you need.

Great tip bud, thanks for the input! :)

guessing that the 6D full frame camera is your main wedding camera, I offer the opinion that with the lenses you have already, adding a 50mm lens would be mandatory for decent wedding photos.

You have nothing for horizontal 2-shots. Nothing for vertical half-bodies.

Great inputs BAK, thanks! :)

IF you can try the lens first please do. I did some tests in mine (i got it a few days ago) and AF was kind of erratic. After micro adjusting it got better but still not in the league of my other glass. Again, it was wide open, which I think it will be most used. Try the 40 2.8 seems better AF performance for me.

I always had problems even with the previous 1.8 and current 1.4. I think the 1.4 was the most reliable AF.

I'll definitely give the lens a try first and do some MFA as needed.

I just hope Canon releases something in the next year so I can replace the 50 STM with something good. Thanks for the tip!

That will never happen. They should update the 50 1.4 and 1.2, different price league though. Try also the 40 2.8, it's silent, not like the 50 STM, which is quite noisy.

Oh...i meant an update for the 50 1.4 :)

I agree, the 50 STM will definitely not be updated. As my current fund will go to the 135L...the 50 STM will just be a stop gap solution so I have such focal length during my shoots and travels. The plan is buy a good fifty next year when my funds get refreshed - I am hoping for an update in Canon's higher end 50's that time. What would be ideal for me is a 50 1.4 Mark II that is sharp wide open from corner to corner and has IS, although the latter is not a must have. Otherwise, i'll just buy a used 50L that time which retails for about 1200 USD used in my home country.

I have 50mm STM but i don't use it for wedding since I've already have 24-70L II. I shoot wedding with two bodies, one with 24-70, another one with 135L. However, 135L is a bit too long if I'm in tight space which 85mm will be better fit. I heard a lot about 85mm 1.8 and will get one.

So if you have fund for 50 STM, i think you should get it based on your current gear list.

Thanks for the insights and sharing your wedding setup bud, i appreciate it! :)

Do you still have the 24-105 in your gear list and do you have any flashes?

Yup, I still have my 24-105 (I don't plan on selling it for times when I need flexibility and a general purpose backup lens). On the flash department, I have a 430EXII right now along with a pair of youngnou radio triggers for off camera flash. I thought about adding one or two flashes but this will pretty much depend on my shoots - I do second shooting for weddings from time to time so I don't have a strong need to add flashes just yet.

Get the 50mm 1.8 plastic fantastic, it does a great job for weddings - you are not shooting charts, I get tack sharp images with it even at 1.8 and it's only $80. Walk around with it and see if 50mm suits your shooting style before commiting to expensive glass. I use the 50mm seldom at weddings (group shots, some head shots, etc), so the feather weight of this lens doesn't bother me carrying it with me at all times. I did however invest into the 24 1.4 and the 35 1.4 - get the sigma versions cuz if you accidentally damage or drop the canon 35mm version you won't be happy for a very long time.
