Best Sharpening Challenge

Oops......., forgot to mention that I used PaintShopPro-8 to sharpen the picture. Used unsharp mask to sharpen the picture.

Ok folks once and for all lets see who has the best method for
Sharpening. You can use the program of your choice. I just found
another excellent combination for PS. that works incedibly well for
printing.....

Here is the original patch at original size in Fuji soft sharpen,
that I have been using. Copy it and see what you can do.

Now, here is my submission to the challenge

Good Luck and have fun...........

Hi Jeff --

Well hopefully I have learned well from the master (just call me Grasshopper...). You might find a few PS notations that look familiar to you in my work, Jeff. :)

1. Convert to L*a*b
2. Gaussian Blur of 2.0 on a
3. Gaussian Blur of 2.0 on b
4. USM of 75/3.0/3 on L
5. Convert back to RGB
6. Save As 8/High JPEG for a 20k file

They look really close to my eye onscreen at 100% here. But, this is for PRINTING, so I blew our two submissions up to 200% to really winnow in on the detail of each.

To my eye, there is some blockiness in the blow-up of your submission -- it almost looks painterly, like the Paint Daubs filter in PS, at this setting:

Filter > Artistic > Paint Daubs
Brush size 4
Sharpness 12
Brush Type: Wide Blurry

What say ye on mine?...

best,

I'll never be able to stop buying camera gear, will I?

Shudder ...

Buddy that looks real good and the detailed closeup does look smoother. Great Job. Now the final printed version will tell the tale. What I am doing is compiling all the various versions on one 8.5x10 glossy in order to compare them side by side. I suggest that anyone interested in seeing the true winner should print them out as well. That way you're not taking anyones word for it but can see it for yourself. Shudder, as you and I have found out recently , what we see on screen is not neccessarily what we get in print. I'll let you know which one I feel prints better, but so far, on screen, it looks like you have me beat this time.
What a GREAT way to learn and explore the power of the "Digital Darkroom".....

Your Yahoo URL doesn't load (they don't alllow remote linking of images)... Can you try something else (perhaps get a pbase account)?

Why is it that my Pics are larger than everyone elses. I downloaded the original, sharpened it , uploaded to my web album and linked to it. Its way bigger than all the rest, yet I never changed the size.???????????
It seems to have jumped from about 200x200pixels to 700x700.
Any ideas why.

Hi Jeff and folks --

I'm really into printing right now (well, getting it right at the least...) and so I put together all of the images that retained Jeff's original 292x294 pixel size and put them on a single 300 dpi doc (sorry if I am jumping the gun on your Jeff!). It is here:

http://www.davegage.com/mmc/fujistuff/JeffShaprpenChallenge.jpg

You may not get the image to actually load from my server as it is an 888k jpeg file, but you can right-click it to save it to your desktop (or if ona Mac, just click and hold on it, then Copy Image -- I did this as a test so I know it works).

In PS, I flattened the file and saved it as jpeg 11 (Max Quality) so that your print results would be good. If you feel you'd rather get the original .psd file from me, let me know and I will send it along. Be warned, it is a 3.7 MB file (that's why I didn't use it here).

The printed version looks real good. It is hard to tell what I think works best (maybe I need a loupe?...), but I am satisfied by the results of the process I put in my submission. Perhaps you all will like yours as well.

great job, thanks.
Hope Jeff doesn't mind that I trumped his thread... :)
I 'd like to suggest to include the original soft image also as a
reference, since in my view the "best" method is the best tradeoff
between artefacts and sharpness.
Good idea. I'll redo the file tonight (it's 9:04 AM in California right now) to include the original file as well. Till then, folks can dl the one that is up.

No Problem shudder

The best result should be decided amongst us all anyway and not by me alone. For those who haven't posted their method/procedure it would be helpful to others to know what you did............ Thanks shudder

Hi Shudder,

Well, you inspired me to print some photos. I wanted to make copies of some recent family snapshots for my sisters, so I downloaded QImage again, after having passed on the demo a few months ago. It was the easiest way - by far- to make multi-photo pages.

After that, I set-out to print 8x10's of some of my favorite images from the past few months. As an experiment, I used the original files and did the processing completely within QImage - mainly contrast adjustments and sharpening, saved as .tifs and printed. The prints are pretty spectacular with no halos or artifacts visible.

History Brush
Tao --

I may be putting words into Jeff's mouth, but the point of this is to find out what folks do to sharpen prior to printing, so that it can be used as a process on images via actions in PS or Sharp Control or what have you.

Did you use the History Brush to manually paint out artifacts on your entry? If so -- and while that it is legit -- do you have any sort of full frame process that you might use to do a whole image (considering that this is just a 292x294 portion of a full 2832x2128 image)? I Mean, do you do anything that involves filters that affect the whole thing, not just portions of it?

Does that make sense?...

hth,
shudder

Doesn't work. Anyways, it is stored at my yahoo albums, at:

http://photos.yahoo.com/whispersfromspirit And go to the Fuji Sharpening Challenge folder to find the picture. My apologies to everyone for the several posts on this!
Gosh that looks like a huge URL.
Let me know if it works?
