capture one is BS

I downloaded the free Sony version of Capture One. It does a fine job on RX10M3 files.
You downloaded v9 (which will also eventually stop supporting new cameras).
Not being familiar with C1, I have no idea how crippled this version is from C1 Pro.
Most people get along fine with Express ... but those who want Pro, and can afford it, get Pro. It costs a lot less than the $1500 camera being discussed.
The cost is certainly reasonable. But, if it doesn't support the RX10M3, I have little to no use for it at any price.
v9 Pro does support the RX10 III, just as v9 Express does support the RX10 III ... but that does not mean those programs will also support an RX10 IV, whenever that appears. You might need v10 for that, This is the way things work now.
LR5 still supports my Nikon Df.
No surprise - it's a 2013 camera.
The Express version will work fine for the Sony.
I agree. I have no need for the Pro features. I have no need for v9 either because my cameras are old and are supported by v8 Express.
I doubt that there are many new cameras in my future.
Nor mine ... and thus no matching new software either.

Sucks, this page says upgrade from 7 or 8 to 9 for $99.

That's not the link for the Sony upgrades. Here it is:

https://www.phaseone.com/en/Online-Store/Sony-upgrades.aspx

It's only US$50 / 50 Euro to upgrade Capture One Express for Sony to Pro for Sony.

And if you have Capture One 8 Pro then it's only US$40 / 40 Euro - just make sure you click on the right tab in the above link to show it.

I'm actually using Capture One 9 Express for Sony after having previously purchased Capture One 8 Pro for Sony. It's so good I haven't actually felt the need to spend the $40 to upgrade to the Pro version.

The only real limitation of the Express version is the inability to do local edits, but I find I just don't have the time to do that anyway so the the free version is all I need.

I just think we're so lucky as Sony users to be able to take advantage of such high quality software at no cost (for the Express version) or very little cost (for the Pro version).

Hi William,

The Sony RX10 mk III is supported in Capture One version 9 and is not supported in version 8. For a full list of cameras supported under version 8, please refer to this KB article:

So my RX10 is covered but RX10m3 is not

Hell DXo Pro optics gives you the new cams as they come out! As modules No Charge!!!

So I wrote

You know that is just plain stupid to expect someone to repurchase software just to be able to process a new version of raw files in the same series of cameras covered in previous purchased software........ Shame on Sony

I have bought 707,828,H5,1,A100,HX100,HX200,HX300,HX400,RX100, RX100m2,RX100m3, RX10, RX10m3. Now this may be the last sony product I'm ever buying!

Heck, I gotta Vent it out, anyway......
.

I don't understand your post at all. Why are you angry at Sony, and blaming them for Capture One's upgrade policies???

Seems bizarre to me for someone to do that.

.
All I know is I'm done with capture one. Period, and that may seem Bizarre too. Why do you think they do it? To make more money from their customers. And it goes round and round.

Sony Should have leveraged Capture One to either support older versions in new cameras or provide the new ones at no charge to previous customers. But my solution is to never use any programs like that, that I don't need.

Nothing new here. Often when new cameras are released, one needs to upgrade from software version X to version X+1, in order to get file support.

For example, in order to get support for some new cameras, one was required to upgrade from LR 5 to LR6. It happens that sometimes the launch of new cameras is concurrent (more or less) with version upgrades of the software.

I'm sick of this type of thing too.

Even offering a year or two free updates would be nice. I also hate being pushed towards Creative Cloud type programs as well. Prefer to own a program not rent by the month.

I hear you Bill.

If you read your software EULA (End User License Agreement) you definitely do not own it. You are buying a license to use it. The software company retains ownership.

Whether you pay a large one-time fee to use the software or whether you pay a small monthly fee to use the software, the actual ownership of the software is exactly the same.

I much prefer to pay a small pittance to subscribe and always have all camera and software updates included.

That's true ... but so far, no company I know of has imposed restrictions on how long a licensee retains full functionality of 'purchased' software. The licensee can continue using it for years and years as long as it still runs under newer operating systems and with newer hardware.

The ownership is the same, but the control over the software is not the same. For example, if a licensee stops paying the monthly subscription cost for Lightroom, certain features of the program become disabled permanently.
I much prefer to pay a small pittance to subscribe and always have all camera and software updates included.
That pittance turns into a lot of money over time ... and if the program is Lightroom or something similar, you might be locked into the subscription for your lifetime (which is of course the implicit goal of a subscription model) if you want full functionality to continue. Depending on actual costs, I much prefer to pay a reasonable price for a program once and use it for as long as I choose to use it without updates. (I personally don't have any software subscriptions and I don't use any version of Lightroom. Others, of course, have different priorities and requirements.)

Of course. We all have different priorities and different financial circumstances. I subscribe to Microsoft Office and the subscription also gives me a Terabyte of storage on Microsoft OneDrive. I keep all my data and photos on Microsoft OneDrive and get immediate backup and off-site storage. For me my photo avocation is a priority and I wouldn't be without my Lightroom/Photoshop CC subscription. The value of these two subscriptions are very important to me, the cost for me is very small and I'll always have them.

I know what for me at my stage in life is a "pittance" can be difficult for some and I can appreciate that. Thank you for pointing it out.

I realize that but how hard is is to offer a profile download to existing software. DXo optic pro does it.
I told you on page one that DxO does exactly the same thing that Phase One and Adobe do, which is to eventually stop supplying camera updates to earlier software versions. DxO and Phase One are not on identical support/upgrade schedules, so apparently DxO's schedule hasn't directly affected you ... so far ... but it will if you keep buying new cameras.

Then I guess I have no alternative than to convert to dng and go from there.

Yet another reason why I'm glad I shoot JPG. 😄

The only reason I'm taking raw is I find I can get more natural sharpening on raws than jpg.
If that's the case then just use the free Capture One 9 Express for Sony. No need to pay for the Pro upgrade.

Surely that would be a more sensible solution than going through a DNG conversion process just to use you old software.

I prefer to sharpen in PS. So converting to dng does a folder at a time.
