Please, no flames. My intent is to seek information, not to criticize anyone.

I've been following this forum with the goal of obtaining the information required to make a decision on which portable HD (or CD burner) device to purchase.

It seems that every day there's another Tripper glitch reported: Hardware, software, firmware, user's manual, pilot error. Mostly shrugged off as minor, but often disabling.

What's up with this device?

Lots of users, so lots or reports of misc. glitches?

I've got a Tripper and it works fine with my XP Pro machine. And also with an old PII laptop that runs Win 98 SE.

As far as I know, there are two known problems with the Tripper

1. The firmware update program will only work with Win 98. This can be finessed if you have a DOS boot floppy. You can boot an XP machine using the DOS floppy and run the firmware update program from it. (This is irrelevant for new owners, because the Trippers usually come with the most recent firmware.

2. Shorter than desired battery life. This can be dealt with by using an external battery. Either one that you make yourself from Radio Shack parts, or a commercial "Universal" external battert. insidecomputer.com has such an external battery. This hasn't been an issue for me. It is an issue for people who use stacks of IBM microdrives.

There are some clumsy passages in the user manual, but if you know about these complaints, you probably have also seen the posts that clarify these issues.

There are always reports from Windows 98 users having problems, but Win 98 users have more problems. Because quite often it involves suddenly getting a USB interface working that might not have ever been used before, so it might not have ever worked.

Also, practically every USB device I've seen says that Windows 98 SE is the minimum, but a lot of Win 98 (not SE) users try to use USB devices.

Or did you have some other problems in mind?

I like my Tripper because:

1. It worked with the laptop drive I already had. Some other devices don't let you install your own drive.

2. The Tripper HD to computer HD speed is very fast. The Tripper CF reader to computer is moderatly fast.

3. Its user interface is simple and works.

4. No weird problems. It works with all my CF cards. And my Windows XP computer recognized it without needing any additional drivers. My Win 98 SE laptop works with it, but it needed drivers installed.

Gary: I have to agree with Wayne. There are a few minor issues with firmware and battery life. Both can and have been worked with. I just got back from a humming bird expedition and I dumped hundreds of photos into the TRIPPER with absolutely no problem. The TRIPPER PC interface is fast and that is what I really want.

Are there better devices out there....yes, but they have features on them that I do not need and I am not willing to pay for.

dunno, I had absolutely no problem with mine and use it as PHD and also as external hard disk. works flawlessly for me.

I've only had my Tripper for a couple of weeks, but I've used it on several shoots now and it performs flawlessly. Last Sunday, I shot 1,300 photos, transferring all from 1 GB cards to the Tripper, then to my HD, and all worked fine.

I use Dennis' external battery pack to get around power llimitations, and the simple interface is all I need.

In short, my Tripper does just what it is supposed to do. No complaints.

Janice,

To let you know, I run only mac's and am running OS 10.2.6. I bought a tripper to use on a large photoshoot where I needed large amounts of storage. If you or anyone else is interested in a 20GB tripper I will sell it packaged as I bought it for 225.00. BTW you do not need to install drivers for OSX, it mounts like a regular hard drive.

Thank you,
Larry

It is nice to see this post. I jsut purchased a tripper today. It looks like this is a piece of hardware that deos exactly what it is supposed to do. Accept cards, transfer pics to it. transfer pics from it to a hard drive on your pc or mac.

I am running win2k with the latest service packs, is anyone else running this setup? I am guessig I may need to install drivers once I connect it to my machine, but if not all the better.

What about the battery life, I am going on a trip next Friday. Do I need to have an extra battery if I am going to be transferring to the Tripper once I am back in my hotel room? Or is the AC adapter enough?

A full charge on the TRIPPER internal battery is enough power to transfer the contents of three full 1 GB microdrives. If you use Solid State cards you can add about 1GB to that. If your need is to transfer more than 4GB (solid state ) 3GB (microdrive) to the TRIPPER you will either need an AC adaptor to power the TRIPPER or an external battery pack.

If you are waiting until the Hotel room by all means use the AC power supply and save your battery for the time when you will not have a wall outlet.

You don't need any more power if you will only be using the Tripper in the hotel room. You can run it off the AC adapter. The only time that battery power is an issue is if you take the Tripper with you out in the field and want to transfer a bunch of gigs worth of images, using the Tripper's battery. Then the Tripper's internal battery will give out.

Insidecomputer.com has tested several PSDs (Portable Storage Devices) and shows that the Tripper's internal battery is good for transferring about 8 gigs of images.

http://www.insidecomputer.com/performance_comparison.htm

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the battery test. But some have reported that those tests are optimistic and you should scale the life down by half. il.e., consider the Tripper's battery as being good for 4 gigs and not 8. I haven't tested this myself, because I have enough flash cards so I could always wait until I had AC power to transfer my images.

If battery power is a concern, InsideComputer has an external battery that will work with a Tripper:

It's odd because it is told here http://www.insidecomputer.com/performance_comparison.htm

that the Tripper can download 37x256Mo (or 8.09GB data) with a single full charged battery (71 minutes).
That mean much more than your 4Gb of "Solid state" Data.
Who's right ?
FRED

Thank you all for replying. I am not too worried about the battery as I have enough cards to get my by while I am out and about. I have 1 256 and 1 128 card plus a couple of smaller ones I can use in a pinch if needed. I have a Nikon 885, 3mp camera, I don't know how many pics I will take since is really my first vacation with it that I intend to use it as my primary camera.
What about going through and airport...anything to worry about there....

I read the same information on the TRIPPER battery life prior to buying one.

I can tell you for an absolute fact that I have never been able to coax more than about 3.5 GB out of the TRIPPER using a microdrive. I just double checked all of my test and this is the case over and over again. I have tried three different internal batteries and this is also the case.

Utilizing a 512MB Transcend 30x solid state card the very best runtime I got was 5GB in 10 downloads. This is copying the data and immediately turning the unit off. If you do any in between futzing with the TRIPPER like checking disk use and other stuff you will shorten even this runtime.

The fact of the matter is that both of the TRIPPERs I have had have NEVER approached the battery run time listed on the Inside Computer chart. I have done repeated test and 3.5GB (microdrive) and 5GB (solid state) is the best I have found.

If Inside Computer has a TRIPPER that will dump 8GB of data on a single charge of the pitiful internal battery I would gladly trade theirs for mine ;-)

if you're using CF card you will get more download than if you're using a microdrive as the microdrive take more power to operate.

Probably some cards are faster than other so probably you can get more download with a faster card. I can get more than 4GB with my SimpleTech CF card...I think I went up to 6GB.

At least bring the Tripper with you as 256mb + 128mb is not so much and you might run out of storage during the day.

do not worry about going through the airport security with your camera and cards but keep them with you all the time and make sure you have charged battery because they will probably ask you to power your camera up to check if it is a real working device or a bogus one. they do ask me to power up my cell phone, cameras etc.

Bring the camera with you as checkin as the check in scan is safe for electronic devices.

I have tried several times now with 1 GB MD and I could only transfer 2.8GB per charge. I will probably just simply build my own battery pack
out of 8 batteries (2x4 serial, 2 parallel) and get at least 3600Mah out of it.

If someone who said here that internal battery is only 3.3 volts then this pack should run for at least 20GB worth of data.

I got my tripper and it is configured properly. I have a message on the screen of th etripper stating "key operation is not received". Can anyone tell me what this means.
I transfered pics to the tripper without anyproblems.

How do I move the photos from th etripper to my server? Is it a copy and paste? Edit, cut command.
Any help is appreciated. Especially with that error message listed above.
