Hey guys,

I currently use the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II but at times I need an extra stop or two. Would these lenses be good for low light sports? (85 f/1.8 100 f/2.0 & 135 f/2.0) How is the AF speed compared to my 70-200?

I'd be using this on either r a 6D or 7D II

Thanks

Maybe I shouldn't comment as I've never used the 85 f/1.8 or 100 f/2.0 lenses, but the 135 f/2.0 is one of two reasons I shoot both Canon and Nikon. The 135 f/2.0 has a special look and AF seems fast and accurate. The 135 deserves all the accolades it gets.

These lenses all have very fast AF. The autofocus speed should not be an issue with any of them and there are many people who use them for low light sports. It all depends on the focal length you need. Good luck!

You must be shooting in some pretty horrible light; I've shot sports at ISO 6400 and been pretty happy. But I'm using 5D III bodies. I have a 85 f/1.8 I bought for basketball many years ago, but I only use the 70-200 f/2.8 and 300 f/2.8 anymore.

MR

5d3 + 70-200ISMk2 focuses at ISO 10,000 instantly @ 1/320 f2.8

and extermely fast @ ISO 25,000 at same 1/320

You probably take pictures in very low light or very high speed

You need to learn panning

I try to promote primes at all times.

But for sports, I would go into panic mood, since

they are really restricting in those kind of settings.

Don't know about the other 2 but 135mm f2.0 is blazing fast. It has better reach too.

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 - This would work great on my 7D II

Any of the 3 would be very capable at sports. I have used the 85 1.8 for basketball and volleyball in the past in gyms where my 70-200L 2.8II wouldn't give me enough SS with my crop cameras and it worked well. Of course the 135L is the best and most expensive of the three. Go with the one with the best focal length for the sport you are shooting. You might use the ExposurePlot program to see what your most common FL for your shooting is.

The thing that concerns me most about these three is the CA. They are all older designs.

I have used all of these lenses for sports! I sold the 100mm f2 and bought the 135mm f2 when I bought a 1D. I regularly use the 85mm f1.8 and the 135mm f2. The focus motors will keep up with anything.

The CA with the 85mm f1.8 is diminished at f2 and is gone by f2.8. Between f1.8 and f2.8 you have to be careful about shooting directly into light sources and you may still see black stripes on white uniforms turning slightly purple especially if they're not in sharp focus.

CA with 135mm f2 is rare. I've only been able to create some green fringe by focusing near the minimum focus distance. This almost never happens in sports.
