I was shooting owls in woodland. This one came out of the trees into an open space, but I still had to use ISO 16,000 to get a shutter speed suitable for BIFs.

This is a ridiculously good photograph. IMO if anyone feels the need to switch from Crop to FF on the basis of less noise at higher ISO, they need to see this photograph.
I've tried a few shots at ISO 16000 in and around the house and was suitably impressed although my PP noise reduction and sharpening could do with some tweaks.
Top work and a great representation of what crop can do.

Canon sensors are decent, I think the general consensus is that it's the off-sensor A/D that hurts the DR at lower ISOs. Canon says that's something they plan to address, and some people think the 80D has on-sensor A/D. Placing A/D as close as possible to the source is nothing new, been doing that in other industries for 20 years.

Here is a review I watched last night on the 7DmkII as it is one I'm considering picking up this year.
Anyway at 35:58 he compares real world side by side ISO shots with the 5DmkIII. And the 7D2 walks away from the 5D3 at the higher end.
