And can't wait to discuss it....

Unfortunately I had to register a new account, as I had changed e-mails a long time ago, and couldn't remember the password I used with my old one 😦So now I'm waiting to be approved by a moderator....

I have actually been a member of Dpreview.com for more than 10 years.

Anyway, I took the advice of many, and bought the 'inexpensive' (to some people anyway) 6D, but spent close to $5000 on 3 very nice lenses.

I figure with cameras, their will always be something later and greater, and I totally expect to buy a more expensive camera, with more bells and whistles, in 2 or 3 years anyway...... but I might be using these 3 lenses for the rest of my life.

Thats a good way to think, good glass goes a long way, cameras come and go, but equally its very important to have good glass on the end of any camera, enjoy the 6D its a lovely camera.

The glass is more important than anything else. I used to not really believe that until I went to Sony and came back to Canon and was stuck with a 24-105 F/4. Now that lens, isn't that bad if you've never had really sharp lenses. Once I got the 24-70 2.8 ii, it was like someone else said on this forum, "Lasik surgery." Even better than the original 24-70 2.8 I had from Canon.

I had a 5D Mark iii back then, now I have a 6D. I actually prefer the 6D in many ways. Mostly because I can tether to my iPad pro with wifi very easily, I shoot raw, but I can see a full size jpeg preview on a big screen instantly.

I also noticed the focusing point on the 6D seems insanely fast, in any amount of darkness you can put it in. The rest of the focus points work really well too with good glass. I noticed without the good glass I thought the rest of the focus points were useless.

If you're interested in third party battery grips, check out the Meinke, 50 bucks, I've been using it for a while now and it's sturdy. It isn't cheap feeling like the zeikos and even some that are more expensive.

If you do any video, check out the VAF-6D filter. I have started to do some video again and when I compare the 6D to the 5D with the VAF-6D filter in, it appears the 6D is sharper than the 5D and the aliasing is about the same.

I didn't really buy the argument that the 6D had better ISO performance than the 5D Mark iii. I thought it would be too little to tell and never tested it. Yesterday I recorded a video at 12800 with no noise reduction, magic lantern. It was extremely clean. I mean I could have recorded a whole movie at 12800 and it would have looked good. I remember not wanting to touch that number on my 5D Mark iii. I'm not sure if it was magic lantern or if it's because I'm in a different house and maybe the lighting is slightly better, but still an old house without good lighting.

Some cheap options that are really nice and sharp for the future... Check out the 100 F/2. It's 500 dollars, it's sharper than the 100 2.8 L series lens. It's not macro though. Also the 85 1.8, it's like the 100mm brother. It's extremely sharp too.

A good fairly cheap L series lens that I have that is really sharp, for a thousand bucks, cheaper used, the 135mm F/2L.

24-70 2.8 ii is the best zoom I've ever used. I still keep the 24-105 F/4 just incase I need image stabilization for video or something.

The Hoya 82mm variable ND for video they have on B and H works well, I believe it's like 130 dollars. No X's or weird colors or patterns. Completely clean on that 24-70 2.8 ii, if you do any video.

Howdy Fish, I remember you from the Rebel forum, and love your pics.

I take it you sold the Rebel? :-) I'm still using my trusty T1i--waiting for the 6Dii (though that's getting tougher now that the very nice 80D has been announced). But I really want FF.

I just checked your gear list--wow, nice lenses! I'm planning on just getting a couple primes and a walk around zoom. Probably either the 24-105 or the 24-70ii. Does the latter have IS? That helps a lot for night shots.

Looking forward to seeing more of your pics, especially from the 6D!

Good move! The 6D is a nice choice, but good glass will last for decades.

Hi Fishchris. I think I remember you from a long while back. I've been around here since 2004 but had a different user name back then. Funny thing is, I can't remember why I wound up with a different name. Probably left for a while and came back with a different email too. Anyway, I think you're going to love the 6D. I think the IQ is as good as anything out there, especially the noise at high ISO. I'm mostly into landscape but thinking about a birding lens. I know the 6D isn't considered a good choice for this but I will have to use it until I can get a camera more suited. I have seen some awesome bird photos taken with it though. Welcome back and enjoy your 6D and that fantastic glass.

I agree, I too invest in the best glass. I've had a couple of lenses for 10 years, in that time, I've swapped out from a 5D MK1 to a 5D MK2, to a 5D MK3

Hi Chris. Nice camera and lenses. I moved to a 6D from the 5DIII last year as I was done shooting daughter's volleyball and basketball and had the chance to sell the 5DIII and buy the 6D at good prices. Am really enjoying the 6D. I remember your bird pictures and see you don't list your 400 5.6 with your gear. Have your photography interests changed in recent years? What are you shooting nowadays?

Enjoy your new gear.

TYSM ASR45 ☺

This was certainly anything but a spur of the moment decision. I must have watched 100 comparison videos, read countless articles and asked hundreds of questions here on dpreview.....

I was feeling pretty confident with my decisions but for me $6,000 is a LOT of money so of course I was nervous.....

Thanks again ☺

Wow ! Thank you so much for your in depth reply ! I certainly considered the 5d mark 3, as I know it's a fine camera.

I did actually purchase a battery grip along with my new camera and lenses, it was a Vello brand grip for $79... I would have considered a Meinke but I had a fellow on my 7D and it always work fine so hopefully the one for my 6D will be just as good.

I wish I would have read your advice on filters though as I ended up getting a Hoya NDX 500 which reduces light by 9 stops. I totally considered a variable neutral density filter but was scared away when I read about the X patterns that are sometimes caused.

I really do very little video but I do lots of long exposure stuff, often in bright light so I had to have a dark filter.

Anyway thanks again for the in-depth response ☺

Hello Ed yes actually I've been using the 7d for about 3 years now and it has been a fine camera for wildlife.... plus with the 10-22 lens I've even done some pretty nice landscape stuff with it too but I know that's just not what it is designed for so the more I leaned away from wildlife and towards landscapes the more I knew I needed a full frame camera.

No IS on the 24-70..... but then again I have a very nice Carbon Fiber Tripod which will always be with me 😉

Thanks so much for the response I hope to post a lot of really nice shots from my new gear soon ☺

Thank you Jerry and image quality was by far my primary concern with the camera.

Happy snapping 😉

TY Apmadoc ☺ and you know what do some people it might seem kind of funny to be buying a new camera and already thinking about buying another new camera down the road but again as I have said I know that camera come and go and I know that my 6d will be a fantastic backup to whatever super duper camera with all the bells and whistles that I end up with down the road.

Thanks again ☺

Thank you for your response Buchanan ☺ yes I still actually have the 400 F 5.6 just forgot to list it but thank you for the heads up I have added it now. That has been a great lens on my 7D, and now that I have a 6D and the wide medium and almost long lenses available that 400 f5.6 six will probably stay nearly permanently attached to my 7D... woohoo no more lens swapping ☺.... on that camera anyway. My poor 10-22 is liable to get neglected now. I had considered selling it but it is such a great lens on the 7D and will be such a great backup landscape set up, plus you know with Murphy's Law as long as I have a backup I probably won't need it... but as soon as I sell it and don't have it with me I will have a catastrophe with my 6D + 16-35.... you know if you don't want it to rain bring an umbrella lol

Thanks again ☺

Well, you might get scared at what I am about to say, but.....

A nice bracelet of a kind she likes, or a nice necklace and earnings, might go a long way to that (plus a nice dinner). Actually, a nice dinner for her to to wear the jewellery is a must, enjoy wooing her over dinner. To be blunt, if you have not learnt this already (you may be quite young), the ladies like attention, you have to demonstrate to her that you care.

Remember that. And listen.

Sorry, i actually replied to this yesterday, but forgot to hit post....

I was mostly just being facetious, as i actually did buy her a bracelett for V-day, take her out to dinner at least weekly, and give her tons of attention ☺

And regarding the camera gear purchase (at least) she thinks it's a great idea, and is cheerleading for me to make money back with it ☺
