I started sensor cleaning 24 hours ago and it is still going. The manual does not indicate how long this takes. I am not suppose to disconnect the power source or stop the process. How long does this take?

Do you mean mapping out dead pixels? ie clean manually? - you switch it off after a minute or so.

There is NO automatic sensor cleaning on the original 5D. All the sensor cleaning mode does is lock the mirror up. You are then expected to clean the sensor yourself, and turn the camera off which returns the mirror to its normal position. It is all explained in the manual.

The early versions of sensor cleaning just flipped up the mirror and opened the shutter for access to the sensor so you could clean it yourself.

Later versions have three options. One "Auto" setting to self clean (vibrate) the sensor every time you power up the camera. One setting to initiate a self clean, and one "Manual" setting to clean it yourself.

Did you have a lens or body cap on the camera while the shutter was open?. If not, you may have much more dust on the sensor than you did before you started.
