I just came across an announcement on Nikon's website about launch events for the D5 and D500 to be held in various cities throughout the U.S., beginning the second week of February and going into early March. It appears you need to contact your preferred dealer to confirm attendance.

Here is the website with a list of all the participating dealers - http://www.nikonusa....d500/index.page

Come experience the future of DSLR performance.

You’re invited to join us at select Nikon dealers nationwide and be among the first to experience Nikon’s thrilling new flagships, the D5 and D500. These game-changing DSLRs introduce a new era of speed, accuracy, image quality, video capabilities and low-light performance. Test drive the cameras, speak with Nikon product experts, dealer staff, fellow photographers and more.

Seating is limited at each event, so don’t miss out!

First 50 attendees through the door will receive a special gift exclusive to this event!

Id rather Nikon just release some 14bit raw files from both cameras to this very forum, rather than attend a sales seminar....

If Nikon's goal is to push sales, proving that the D7200 is clearly and significantly inferior when it comes to image quality is all they have to do.

But ... dear, about the D7200, I don't have one and frankly, I don't give a hoot! :-)

Some cameras, some lenses, some computers

Why? I'd be happy with the same IQ.

Be nice if they did both eh! :-)

Looks like they are putting enough events on. Wish they did something similar in the UK. :-/

I got an NPS event in London invite through for sometime in Feb, hands on with D5 and D500, looking forward to that :-)

Actually there are different events round the UK. Sorry I don't have the card handy at the moment.

I've RSVP'd for one on the 19th of February, looking forward to it!

I have accepted my invitation to the one in Indianapolis on Feb.10th. Hands on with both cameras but my contact had no info about being able to use your own memory card. I suspect not.

We don't have anything here in FL. I'm interested in couple of things

How's the speed of AF? I know there's no way to measure it accurately. But since Nikon claims D500 and D5 are faster than D4s, I'd like to know if there's any visible difference in the speed at which the camera drive the lens. If you have D810 it's easy. 810 have same speed as D4s. If u can put your lens on D500 and see how fast it works.

Second thing is the group AF. I've seen no mention of group AF. Can you please check if D500 has this? I'm sure it does. Then how many options it has? 7DII has different options. You can chose 5 points, 9 points or even more to the group. I know D4s and 810 has only 5 points in the group. I'd like to know if Nikon improved on this.

Single-point AF, 25-, 72-, or 153-point dynamic-area AF, 3D-tracking, group-area AF, auto-area AF

Likewise. My local one is in Bristol on the 13th of Feb. Other events are in Manchester, Glasgow, Leicester, Dublin and London.
I mustn't be one of the chosen ones. :-( You would think being a Pro member because I had a D300 and have D300S, I would be on a list somewhere, and they would be wanting some more money off me. :-/

When I trudge though the blizzard of specifications and speculation about both the D5 and D500, it's the fact that both cameras have a second processor dedicated solely to autofocus operation that intrigues me the most. This wasn't the case with the D4S, as far as I can tell/read. That has to translate into a big improvement in AF speed. Again, speculation!

Thanks for the info. Where did you see this? Now my question is how many options we have in group AF? If there's only one how many AF points are in the group?

On 7D there are multiple groups (Zone as they call it). This is very useful when you are trying to track a bird with busy background or multiple birds in the frame and you want to get the closest bird in the zone in focus.

I too am curious to see the speed difference. It may not be just the AF drive speed. I'm curious to see if the 3D tracking and auto area AF works better now. Of course the dynamic too. The extra processor should give us more keepers while tracking.

I have already handled D5 an D500 at SWPP in London last Sunday, the rep said it was the first time seen in UK. I like the D500 but will not be buying this year as I have only recently purchased D7200 which I am very pleased with and besides I am never an early adopter, let alone preorder.

I like to see all the test reports and long term users to see if there any problems. Then I make a decision when the price drops.

Surprisingly, there is an event here in Tulsa, OK. So, I just signed up.

The information on the AF-dedicated processor is in the original D5 press release and a lot of the post-launch write-ups on the camera. While I think the camera has a lot of incremental improvements from the D4s AF dedicated processor seems like a bigger deal than some of the other feature. Especially for sports shooters. But that may just reflect my personal bias.

I am signed up for the Nikon presentation Feb 12 in San Francisco. I hope Nikon will be able to talk about the real image quality differences between the D500 and the D750. They are both about the same $$. The D5 upgrades for the D500 are appealing. I have been so pleased the the last 15 years of Dxxx's that the new choices deserve thought as to my personal applications. The real everyday good light images work for just about all the new cameras. So, it is difficult to compare the posted images. The ancillary upgrades ie radio signaled flash are really great. Always carrying and hooking up the RadioPopper is a hassle. For those who need a small flash to replace the missing "pop up" try the Nikon SB 400. It has a low profile and works a lot better than the "pop up" on my D300s. The times that I need the big SB800 are usually off camera. Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing the D500 in person and talking the Nikon experts. I am definitely taking a card with me to play with the images at my leisure
