Hi Everyone, was out with Oly group to test the lens this morning at the local bird park. My initial conclusion -- a must have for nature shooters.

Here is OFC Raw image to share.

I have not posted here for many years now and not sure which link to use. Pardon the 3 options listed below becos not sure which will work.

Lens will hit the Singapore Mkt in mid- Feb but limited limited stock.

Have a Happy Weekend

If you're trying to post a link, I'm afraid you'll have to try again. Nothing comes up when I click them. (The link seems to be to a local file on your computer, so may work for you...)

Thank you for flagging me - appreciate that. Really rusty with postinganyhwere other than Flcikr.

Here we go again:

Looks nice! But do it actually live up to Olympus wording "the sharpest we have ever produced"?

Who knows, anyway I can't get it in a few years, if ever. But I like very much the fact Oly are putting out some serious kit; it can only be a good thing for all us in the "Oly camp/m4/3 camp", so no jealousy here!

I have to say I am not over impressed with the image quality especially for the price although there are some very nice shots there but I would be very disappointed if I had a lens that wasn't tack sharp for £2200 UK pounds.

At 1/80th exposure and with the 1.4 converter seems preety good to me.

But lets wait for full reviews before passing too strong an opinion.

Good point. I was surprised that the resolution chart of the 300f4 is as good as 300f2.8.

Your concern I am sure will be address by the experts when they do all the tests.

Bokeh wise I don't think it will be as good as the 4/3 150f2 /300f2.8.

Have a great weekend

Yes it is very expensive in UK for this lens and my expectation is the same as yours. First time I held the lens and quickly grab a few shots. So blame on the shooter.

I have seen a couple of reviews on uTube and the bird images were tact sharp.

Have a great weekend.

Thanks and appreciate your comments. The PPed version is sharper. I am sure the experts will give a more objective analysis with their lab tests.

The plus side is the lighter weight of about 1.5 lbs vs the competition of around 3.5 lbs.

From what I have seen of my 40-150 f2.8 the bokeh I don't think it will be as good as the competition.

Have a nice weekend.

results from 1/80 at 420mm are impressive and quite a bit even more so if you got the shot hand held.

Yes Paul, hand held. All these years of shooting birdies I do not use tripod.

Have a nice weekend

Thank you for sharing these, very nice indeed. I am renting this lens in May for a trip to Africa, so examples such as these are very much appreciated. :)

Hi Ric,

Your flickr pictures are really sharp. The kingfisher is beautiful, the myna has details!

Do you think 300mm pro + tc1.4 far/bright enough to capture feather details for birds perched among the leaves in the forest, say 40-50ft away? If I crop heavily, can I get a still-sharp image?

I'm new, been shooting birds with oly em1 and 75-300, and fl-50r flash for little less than a year, and I feel a need for longer reach. I've been waiting for this 300mm, but now also considering DSLR e.g. Nikon 7200 with the new 200-500mm. If I'm patient enough, will wait until March for more reviews/product announcement to make decisison.

When I bought my camera, I didn't want DSLR due to its bulk, but now birding is my hobby and looks like 300mm is not helpful with distance. It does fine for close shots.

Thanks for your input.

Hello and good morning. My immi respond is will never be long enough for us birders. But reality we have to make do with what's available. I recommendation. you will need the 1.4 TC to give you the added reach. When needed go ahead to use the digital zoom. As you know you will have a copy of RAW file as well. Lately I find cropping the raw file gives me better results than the JPEG version. Try it out and see what you like. I shoot exclusive in RAW. The latest posting in Flickr of a 100% crop of the portrait of the Stock Bill Kingfisher demo one can 100% crop and still get excellent sharp images.

I was blown away by the amount of detail and sharpness of that image. Both pics of the kingfisher were taken under the canopy and did you notice the 1/30 sec shutter speed at 840mm handheld. No Sharpening applied, very low noise becos of the low ISO thanks to Dual Stabilisation and best of all no tripod needed. This goes to show that the DS of Oly really works and gives a 5-6 stop advantage.

Yes the Nikon or 150-500/600 mm should be a great birding system and suggest that you rent both system to check it out before buying. So is Canon 7DM2. Seen lots of great pics and NC may be even better for BIF compared to OLY.

Ciao

Thank you for replying. Yes we never have enough, but I'm just afraid 300mmx1.4 would still be short, unless cropping heavily gives sharp images still.

Yes the stork billed kingfisher picture is impressive. 1/30 handheld is awesome! Any estimate on the distance to the bird? My hope now with this lens is that I can crop distant bird and still get some feather detail.

It really frustfrated me creeping towards strategically perched Drongos last week, they rarely got that low to the ground.. They flew away as soon as I came within.. I don't know, 40 feet. Once high up in the dark canopy, that was new multitude of problems.

I enjoy m4/3, it is small and don't attract attention. I can climb steeper jungle cliff than my buddies with Canon 100-400 and Tamron xx-600 willing to try, what with tripods. Carrying hides would be an extra load I try to avoid. But in the end, you know if a lens can't "pull" the birds close enough, I don't get good image.

I don't know of local shops here that can rent me long lenses to try, so I gotta make the right decision with these expensive gears. If you can give estimate the distance from you to the kingfisher would be helpful.

Keep posting more pictures, will look at them. Thank you Ric.

That link works for me. Beautiful images of some lovely subjects. It looks like a fantastic lens but the photographer is always the main element in the equation. Well done!

Hi Berry, thank you for taking your time to view the images. Yes it is a terrific lens and the more I am shooting with it -- the AF is so quick and accurate and I come home with much more keepers. I mean sharp images.

Thank you for your kind words and hope more people would post their pics from this lens with time

Take care and have a nice day

Hi Ric,

Had seen the earlier images from your review copy, good to note that you are now in position of your own copy of the lens-Congratulations!

Saw the latest images and they are a great set! The Myna close-up is sharp with plenty of feather details..BUT, the Kingfisher shots are just superb with crazy amount of details! And, that too @840mm with TC, handheld at 1/30s -Unbelievable!This shows how outstanding the lens is, capable of producing such amazing pictures in the hands of those who know how to make the best use of it!

Thanks again for sharing these wonderful images!
Cheers,
Ramesh
