Car People: I Got a New Car

Nice ride! Any chance a stick shift ? Stick shifts are pretty rare with the dealers, most times I think you have to place a special order.
No stick. I go back and forth with them - but I think for me I've decided I'll relegate stick shift to weekend or sports cars only...too much commuting, too much traffic, to want to row my own gears all the time - as long as it's an automatic with manual select-able shift gates (tiptronic style) that's enough that I can still engine brake when slowing down or choose a passing gear on my own - and when there's nasty traffic I can leave it in D!

If I can afford a 'play' car in my future, and have room for it in the garage, I would likely get a lighter, nimble, manual sports car that I could play with when I have time to just go drive on a weekend.

Many thanks!

That is one of the (if not THE) best looking and riding wagons built today IMO. I have owned wagon looking vehicles for my last 3 cars. Although I did look at the Allroad Quattro last year when I was in the market, I settled for my third Subaru Forester in a row.
Subarus are on fire right now in the US - they went from a niche player to really moving up - they are currently outselling VW and Mazda in the states, and creeping up the charts! I always liked them all the way back to the 70s when I'd ride in the backwards crazy chair in the back of a friend's father's Brat!

I think you will find the Allroad so much more versatile than your 2013 VR6 4motion, you may always own a 4 door hatchback from now on.
I was already hooked on them. Most of my cars have been this style actually. I had an 85 Prelude, 97 Pontiac GTP, 00 Passat sedan, and my last 2013 CC which were not hatch or wagons - everything else has had a rear door - 87 Hyundai Excel 5-door, 90 Mitsubishi Montero, 95 Mitsubishi Montero, 03 Passat W8 wagon, and 07 Passat wagon...and now this one.

Enjoy your new ride, it looks like a great wagon and I know you will love driving it for many years to come!
Many thanks!

I don't understand first-world, commodity fetishism, especially car fetishism. I supposed books have been written to attempt to explain it.

I drive a 17-year-old Honda CRV that came with a pre-dented hood. It starts when i turn the key, stops when I step on the gas, turns when i move the steering wheel. It holds a lot of stuff. It gets 25+ miles/gallon. It's starting to rust, so i'll have to get something else soon.
Have you had it tuned lately? Using the correct pedal?

We all have different priorities. I have a fairly new Nissan Maxima (sort of a poor man's Audi), and it has a host of safety features and electronic assistance. More than just transport.
.

Ha! Dang, been pressing the wrong pedal all this time!

Reminder to self, never post before noon.

.

Congratulations. Always nice to have a new car. What engine?
Thank you!

2.0 Turbo (220HP, 258Lbs), gas.

BTW, I'd leave the wheels at standard issue if I were you.
I'll leave them for a while - but likely a year or two down the road I'll get the itch to change it up for different looks. But my goal would be close to stock look - I'm not into 21" rims with rubber band tires - especially on an AWD wagon that is meant to handle non-paved trails!

I've never been sold on diesel. In Australia, it used to be the way you advertised that you couldn't afford proper fuel. The argument with diesels is that they offer "more torque" but the enthusiasts forget that it is delivered at low RPM and has to be "diluted" by appropriate gearing before it hits the road.
I've driven a diesel or two that had been modded and they definitely can be surprising in low end torque - but they've never really been my thing either. Never owned one, likely never will. They make more sense for those who tow, and in larger commercial vehicles.

Nice car.. always had respect for the Audi range although right now , as you may well have heard .. the VW range both here in UK and in Europe generally have suffered something of a blow with the flare-up over the codged Emissions readout etc and I believe it's going to cost them a bomb to sort that out and deal with all the required conversions and corrections.
Oh yeah - we know! Remember, the whole 'diesel-gate' thing STARTED here in the states...then Europe jumped aboard and started investigating. I definitely think it's going to end up knocking diesels down in general - though VW got caught lying and cheating, in the end many more diesel engines from many other brands are going to be proven to be emitting more than thought.

My Daughter meanwhile was searching around for a replacement for her last faithful and was really lucky to come across this one. I just had brief chance to grab a quick shot whilst she was calling on a very quick visit to us ...
Very nice ride for your daughter. My mother had a CLK for many years and loved it.

Have to agree to a slight extent.. but after all..the post does include photos and isn't that what the Forums are all about..
.

So if i get a new audio system, or a fancy big-screen teevee, or some other consumer extravagance that makes me feel like a special person, i can take some pedestrian, insurance-record photos with a Sony APS-C and post them here with a long discourse about the product here under the pretense that it's about photography?

"Riding lawn-mower people: I got a new Dixie Chopper Silver Eagle 60-inch, zero-turn mower with a 27-HP Kohler EFI engine, digital display, and 500-pound towing capacity… You know, for the .01% who care about riding lawn mowers."

How many posts do i have to accumulate before i'm allowed to ignore the rules? Do i need to break 20,000, or will 10,000 or 5,000 do?

.

the specifics of them are an extra which maybe should be restrained a little.. but after all..your post did include it to some extent too ..

By Golly..there's quite enough..MORE than enough...rubbish and flam on the Forums these days so anything a bit more natural maybe can be accepted gracefully...

I don't understand first-world, commodity fetishism, especially car fetishism. I supposed books have been written to attempt to explain it.
There's never going to be an explanation for why anyone likes, collects, obsesses over, or enjoys any product, hobby, thing, place, etc. - it's all personal. People like what they like, and most people pursue the things they like because that's what makes them enjoy living life. For some, it might be collecting coins or comic books. For some, it might be photography, or specifically a certain type of photography. Or collecting lenses. Or maybe they like watches and collect more than they need. Or shoes. And so on. Liking cars, and wanting new ones, is something that 'car' people will have - whether you have no money and buy beaters to fix them up yourself in the yard, or have more money and like to go after a shiny new car every few years. For me, it's about driving. A car for me is not an appliance, so whether it stops, goes, and starts is not my driving motivation to own one...it's about HOW it drives, how it handles, how it looks, how it fits, how well it corners, how it stops. I may drive on weekends on a curvy back road, I take my cars to tracks to run them at high speed around courses, and every moment I'm in a car, I'm smiling, enjoying myself - whether it's just cruising slow with the windows down watching scenery pass by, or driving it flat out, late braking, spooling up the turbo as I come out of a turn and power through to the outside edge and hit 3-digit speeds down the backstretch.

Some people like to cook, some like to knit, some like to hike, some to photograph, some to read books, and some like to drive. I happen to like many of those things (not a knitter), so those are the things I buy and pursue.

Sounds good! Nothing wrong with a 17-year-old CRV. Though if it were mine, I'd have taken more care of it, polished it, kept it sealed and avoided rust, and kept it running AND looking good - because I like cars. One of my high-school side projects with a friend of mine who's father had a hydraulics shop was to buy $500 beaters, fix them up ourselves with minimal investment, and sell them for a small profit. We fixed up a 65.5 Mustang, 68 Ford Ranchero, and 74 Datsun B210. Total investment never exceeded $1,000...and some of those cars were older than your CRV at the time!

I fail to see how this OP is relevant in this forum.

Bring on the hate.
No hate needed. The relevance (to me) was that these are photographs taken with an A6000 and FE70-200mm lens...and something I enjoyed sharing with other fellow e-mount shooters IF they happened to also be car people. That's why I added the qualifier: 'Car People:' - so that non-car people could just avoid the thread! I could have taken the shots with my phone or my DSLR, but then I'd have to post them in a different forum, or they'd be completely off-topic. I decided to push the limits a bit and post car photos here because they were taken with a camera & lens that belong in this forum.

Nice! I like the Dixie Chopper - though I prefer the ECaliber with the 35HP Kawasaki engine - 60" deck is good, but the Xcaliber has the X2 Wind Tunnel design.

How many posts do i have to accumulate before i'm allowed to ignore the rules? Do i need to break 20,000, or will 10,000 or 5,000 do?
Probably 10K would suffice.

Oh, lighten up Mr Burns.. ;-)

This is just as relevant as people posting pics of their food or such and if anyone deserves some leeway it´s zackiedawg, who continually posts more excellent pics here than probably anyone else.

The GTI is a sweet ride. Not interested in the R?
Nice S4 Henry. Those are quick indeed! I'll probably be doing a mild mod on my allroad - likely APR stage 1 and maybe a downpipe - I'll leave exhaust stock. Should boost me up about 35-40HP which will be enough to make it quick but still civil enough as a business car and commuter.

I actually was thinking of the R myself. Aside from very hard availability right now, and needing months to order one, they also were just a wee bit too small overall - decent cargo room with seats down, passenger room about the same as the allroad with seats up - but it's the seats up AND cargo space combo I needed.

Thanks, it actually is an S3 Prestige, Justin. It turns out that they are really not much smaller inside, (for four people), but the ride is a lot different (more aggressive) than the S4 after some of the mods. It also has the Haldex system (fwd always engaged, rwd optional), not the Torsen (fwd/rwd bias). Chassis is same as Golf R, just executed as a sedan. On freeways, I hit 32mpg as a result.

Can't do the downpipe legally in California (I wish), but it has the Neuspeed Power Module and the APR stage 1 intake, as well as the Sprint Booster Power Convertor.

It is much faster than the S4 in the current setup. The salesguy confirmed that, with the current mods, only the R8 will still be faster. It seems to be similar to the upcoming RS3, if it gets to US shores, but the RS3 gets the horsepower out of a five-banger. Even so, I am at less than 10lbs per hp in the current setup, with the super-fast shifting double-clutch transmission (DSG/PDk/S-tronic).
Should boost me up about 35-40HP which will be enough to make it quick but still civil enough as a business car and commuter.
Do look into the Sprint Booster Power Converter, it doesn't add hp by itself, but it completely changes the response curve to the gas pedal (stock, mild, aggressive), and turns the car into a much more responsive car. It actually is astonishing how the car changes at the push of a button.

I too come from V8 and SUV in past, and I can tell you, nothing is more fun than driving a small wheelbase, light sedan with lots of horsepower. Not for speeding, mind you, but the car is simply so astonishing quick, it puts a smile on your face.

Every friend that drove it thus far, goes "Holy S**t"!

Ach! Genuine type there...I actually knew it was the S3 and thought that's what I typed - didn't proof-read well enough and fumble-fingered the 4 on the keyboard.

I drove the S3 and Golf R back to back - indeed not too much different between them. I actually would have had the S3 on my list to consider, had they offered the Sportback version in the US...I hate that they only give us the notchback. Same issue with the A4/S4, and the Golf R Variant - give us the wagons!

I hear a lot of Audi folks talk of the Sprint Booster - will have to look into that. I've had a long relationship with APR as they were one of my main sponsors of my show, so I can get some EE-type discounts with them!

Very nice ride, by the way! It's really cool when all the puzzle pieces fall together so perfectly.

I share your enthusiasm and joy although I find myself at the exact opposite end of the car spectrum.

I've had a pickup truck most of my life but thought I could do without one in '06 when I bought a new Mazda 3 Hatchback. I was wrong. The Mazda is a super cool little car, but it's not a truck.

I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money on a new P/U that I'm not going to put very many miles on and am over joyed to have found a near flawless 2002 Toyota Tacoma that fits my needs and my budget perfectly.

Well, I can tell you a little how people in Germany feel about this. On one hand it was about time that Piech and Winterkorn egomonsters running the company got a kick in the back and that VW hopefully takes a turn to a more customer-oriented way.

On the other hand the talk about 48 billions penalty in the States for VW is outrageous considering that not a single person was harmed by VW cheating with the engine emission class. Now compare that to General Motors ignition lock failures killing at least 153 peoples and paid 900 Million to the government.

Some here even suspect that this topic is hijacked to benefit US car manufacturers by harming European competition.

Very nice car and congratulations. Enjoy and drive safely.

I do have to make a comment as a 'car person' (to the degree I can afford). The 'alloy wheels' that come on so many cars today are bland and homely. Last year I bought a used Lexus which came with the standard 'alloys' and they were IMO awful. Plain and cheap looking, they looked like they belonged on a mini van - not a luxury sedan. I replaced them with a set of chrome wheels from the same brand (Lexus) but a couple of years newer than my car and it looks so much better.

If you don't mind my saying so, if I bought that Audi I would do the same thing to it.

I agree completely. There are very few cars that come with what I'd consider nice looking wheels. I've often ended up replacing the wheels on past cars, or custom ordered them with a set I liked...and it's likely something I'll end up doing here too. I'll stick with these for a few months, or even a year or so, but somewhere down the line I'll likely get something sportier that suits me...whether from Audi or aftermarket.

I replaced the stockers on my 2003 W8 wagon with a nice set of BBS rims:

On my 2007 wagon I upgraded to the larger 10-spoke sport rims:

And the car I traded in for this one I had the chrome-plated optional 19" rims:

I usually end up making some custom mods and touches along the way!

Where you can pop out and shoot? Lions, tigers and bears (and egrets), oh my! LOL

Just kidding, nice car ^5 That had to set the old lens budget back a bit. I'm lucky enough to work from home, so I put like 100 miles a month on my car..lol It should wind up lasting longer than I will :-)

Not sure if you have a CP for any of your wider lenses? I find it helps cut the glass reflections/glare. As well as costing a stop or so.

Good luck and drive safe :-)

Actually it does have a nice big 'panorama sliding roof' - there's about 4-feet worth of glass panel stretching over the front and back seats - with the front 2/3 sliding open over the back half. So indeed there's room to stand up and shoot. ;)

I've never worked from home (honestly I don't know if I have the willpower to do it - I need to be in an office to feel like I'm working) - but I did have my office just 1/2 mile from my house for about 4 years and it was nice. Now, I'm 27 miles away, so I have a 54 mile round-trip commute 5 days a week, through both highway and city, lots of traffic and stoplights.

I do - but not for that particular lens. At some point when it's washed and I've got time, I want to go out and take some nice shots of the new car, interior and out. These were quickie shots taken on my way back from the wetlands the day after I bought it - the 70-200mm was the only lens with me at the time!

Um, I have to disagree.

VW, (at least several high managers) purposefully choose to instal devices to defeat Government regulations. Sure no one directly died or was harmed from this, but it still was deceitful. Now the penalty does seem excessive, not sure what it should be.
