... reading this thread. You can't belive it.

But I'm sorry Mr. John Watts. It's nothing wrong with the photos. They are good for the first try and I agree with your intension. Just keep doing your work.

But I really enjoy reading posts and replies like this one:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=5645588

I opinion is such posts belong to some religious forums. So please ask Phill to open such a forum.

I noticed no nudity on any of the photo. They are just photos of a proud dad and photographer.
Could you take some photo's of me for a bit of a portfolio?.

The objectification of a human being no matter how seemingly
innocuos diminishes both that person and the one objectifying or
contributing to the objectification.
hmmmm.... yeah that is how it in theory SHOULD be. But not in practise... this world is very materialistic. And therefor you cant escape objectifying humans. In that cae every model actor singer and athlete should be banned as dirty and bad. You really need to explain to me what you exactly mean with objectify, since in that case all art with a model in it should be seen as terrible objectifying, starting from the first cave-paintings from the stone-age. And i am sure you have sometime looked at a beatifull woman and though "wow she looks good", shame on you!

Ertoic glamour and nude picture also express things just as any other piece of art. even sexual attraction is a feeling you know.

Dear bob,

first i would like to say that john watts is my farther. i feel that you have some serious issues, dont think im stupid i have studied psychology. from what you have said you control your daughter and i can tell you for a fact that she does many things that you do not know about. i have spoken to many women who had over controling farthers and all though they still love their farthers, they have had their lives ruined. they search for a farther figure in their partners (plurel) and end up torturing them selves. your comments have left my dad feeling very down at the moment. i dont think you know how much damage you have done. as my farther has already stated he has suffered multiple stokes and this has left him feeling very vunerable. you have, through your own ignorance of the real world, put my farther back into depression and i would like you to think about how 'moraly correct' you are now. if you knew anything of christianity you would know that all people are welcome in the house of god and god does not judge people by their sex, age, colour and many more differances in human nature. he loves everybody. i know this forum is not for this type of disscussion but i feel i need to address this gross-ignorance.

talking about the actual photoes dad you did really well and i am very proud of you. you already know that some of the shadows are a bit harse, but you know you can rectify this next time. all of this for you is a learning curve, not just the photography but everything. i now you have taken to heart what the ignorant few have said but everybody else has been brill. they have given you tips, encoragment and they all know you have done a great job. you brought out maxines natural beuty, with your own natural talent.

I would also like to thank all those who have supported my farther and wish you the best of luck in every thing you do in your lives.

Many regards
Ashley Watts

Very nice post with a lot of truth in it. I'm afraid it will not have much effect on Bob as he practices what I like to call Taliban Christianity. Unless you see and do things his way you are going to he11. Sadly if he had the power to force you to follow his beliefs he would not hesitate to use it.

Hi Ashley, good response although it could have used a bit of a spell check. People like Bob annoy me because they only see in black and white. It is their version of Morality and Bible and everyone else be dammed. Anyway that is way off topic and I apologize. Good luck with modeling.

Nice Shots Mr. Watts.

Pictures of your daughter are well done and perfectly acceptable. You never know what she will use them for in the future but there is nothing wrong with your artwork.

Mr. Haverford had no useful comments on the photos only on his moral outlook on life. If we could keep our comments either positive or only critical of photographic technique this forum would be a better place as would the world.

Thankyou for your efforts. For having the guts to share them. Good luck to your daughter in her pursuits. Sorry you took some unwarranted flack but only from the minority.

While it's true that certain Christian sects do not approve of dancing, that is not the case with most.

I'm sure that most on this forum are more pleased than not that you have some kind of moral compass. And while many would not totally agree with you, appreciate your right to express your opinion.
A person with firmly held convictions, yes. Troglodyte? No.

OTOH, I think Bob is correct that being a part of his daughter's life, where he can be an good influence, is better than rejecting her aspirations out of hand and having no influence at all.
I think we understand your view, though--and respect it.
I know I do.

Guess what? Im going to let you into a little secret here. I'm a
devout Christian, So is my doughter, and my wife is a priest. (just
let that sink in for a min)
Sorry, devout Christians don't dance in night clubs. My daughter's
school doesn't even allow dancing (BTW, even I consider that
particular restriction ridiculous!). And no Christian church I've
ever been a member of allows for a woman priest. I've always
considered the Episcopalians to be an "anything goes" type of
watered down Christian-lite. Say, where in the Bible does it say
that women should be priests? Oh, that's right! A Christianity
unfettered by the Bible! Or Christ for that matter. Sort of like
a United States unfettered by a pesky thing known as a Constitution!

Listen, I'm pulling your chain a little here, but I still stand by
my original statement that taking and posting pictures of your
daughter scantily clad in poses that at the very least objectify
her is a disservice to her and unbecoming of you. Obviously I live
in a world and participate in a forum where my opinions are no
longer mainstream.

know-it-all mouth-offs who have no life except to sit in front of a computer screen and push pins in somebody.

Posting here for anything other than amusement is pointless.

However reading these posts is pretty entertaining, and occasionally - very occasionaly, lately - instructive.

Nice pix, lovely daughter. You don't know how fortunate you are - one of my daughters is a paraplegic secondary to an auto accident, though she is coping quite well and in the last 6 years has regained some use of her arms.

I would be happy for her to dance on a stage.

good luck.

Hi Ashley,

You ARE a pretty girl! Though my post may have seemed intemperate I surely didn't intend it as a blanket indictment of you or your father for that matter. I was criticizing his decision to take pictures of you in suggestive poses and then posting those pictures on the internet. Clearly, my opinion is NOT shared by a majority of this forum, in fact I'd say I'm very much in the minority which should have been overwhelmingly clear from the thread.

He received much more support than criticism on this thread. If I could be so presumptuous I would advise him not to take these discussions too seriously. I have four daughters of my own ages 4 - 20. I would be proud for any of them to have defended me as eloquently as you have your Dad.

Cheers.

Putting on some music and maybe having some of your daughter's girlfriends show up for the shoot to joke with her might help relax her some more.
I'll leave the technical comments about lighting etc. to others,
but one thing I'd say is that she seemed pretty tense, especially
around the mouth. This could well be because of the tension of
trying to "get it right" that you alluded to. One thing I do when
I'm taking pics of my daughter now is the old trick of getting
her to make a funny noise, blow a raspberry etc. to loosen up her
face muscles and make her laughter/smile more natural looking. Of
course, she's only 3, but I don't see why it shouldn't work with
your daughter (who looks like a lovely lass, btw).

Cheers,
Pete
Normally if people are tense I ask them to puff out thier cheeks
and you can't help but laugh when you breath out for looking so
daft. But, I cannot work now because of 4 strokes that I have
suffered and it's affected my memory severly. I am chuffed if I
remember to turn the camera on. I know the techniques in theory but
I just forget to put them into practice when I most need them.It
can be fustrating sometimes but I laugh and joke about it. ( It can
also be usefull sometimes). On the plus side, I now go for a walk
once a day with my camera and I have taken over 8000 pics in 3
months.
Cheers, john

John,

My eyeballs, brain, and sense of aesthetics are all shot from a long day of travel, returning from a vacation. So I have no meaningful comment beyond this: I think it stinks that you share photographs/photographic experience that are nowhere near questionable in taste --just seeking honest comments on their merit-- yet you get a load of moralism and judgment from some folks.

OK, one photographic comment: If this is what you generate under novel circumstances, then I think you and your camera have struck a sound friendship. Keep shooting, keeping sharing, and bear in mind that not all of us will stand in judgment of your character, motives, or parenting skills.

You hid your email so this is the only way I could comment to you. Sorry about the public nature of this post.

Now that you can look back and benefit from hindsight, have you had a good or bad effect here at DPR? You might want to take some time for introspection and see if your method is producing what you wanted to accomplish here by your comments. Did anyone get closer to Jesus as a result of your posts? Or were they driven farther from Him?

We are not here to make the world conform to our beliefs, but rather to commuinicate a Gospel about love and forgiveness, sacrifice and Grace, sin and redemption. Take a look at this thread and decide if anyone is better off for having read your posts.

I have no comments about the original photos. That is not my point. This is: A few years ago, someone, not even a Christian, pointed out the damage I did in one of MY posts. His comment to me (via email) was so on-point that I thought he must have been a Christian as well. He was not, but his insight into my post and into the damage it caused, was right on the money. I learned a lot from it. His name is Larry Smith and he posts here (rather sarchastically at times) regularly.

Can you learn from this? Perhaps a public apology is the place to start, though I doubt it will undo the damage you caused here.

To anyone else who read this and does not like it, I warned you not to! :^) You have no one to blame but yourself. Again, :^)
