What does this image say to you? First Reactions please!

See, that was a joke. I was referring to the 1.6x crop on the 10D (which for some reason I assumed you shot with)...and if you had a 1D (1.3x) or 1DS (FF) you would have gotten the full face...

Just playing with you...

It would be interesting to shoot the full face but light it so one side is completely dark...
While partial cropping of the face can create a strong image, this
one falls very far short. The composition is poor, and the lighting
is harsh. Try again, by changing the cropping and raising the light.

To be honest, to me this shot says "this is a mundane snapshot", if it says anything at all. Does not seem IMHO to have any real originality or creative value in terms of lighting, composition, subject choice, mood, or emotion (unless you personally know the model i guess).

I'm actually a bit surprised it was posted at all, let alone received this many responses. But to each their own.

I like the curves- the hair compliments the shadow of the nose up into the eyelid. I would crop above the lips and up top to tighthen it up and it would be an interesting composition.

It appears that this shot is very similar to many shots in your gallery under Human form on your web site that I just visited. I wonder if you view your images in the same light. I am going to repost this in black and white like several have suggested and see if its better.

Best Regards
Jason

yes there is some similarity jason, and i agree you should try BW with perhaps enhanced tonal range through selective use of dodge and burn tools.

however IMHO my shots are perhaps more "arty" through use of stronger tonal range, (sometimes) moody lighting, less conventional angles/composition and more aggressive cropping to the point of abstracting the image- hopefully avoiding a mundane result-

etc...

It looks like an unconfortable family member being forced
to sit for a portrait. That's my first impression after 2 seconds.

but then I noticed the dilated pupil and wondered if you were
testing for the often cited effect it's supposed to cause. I looked
at it again and no... still looks like an unconfortable expression to me.

I agree with you. You definately have a more arty look to your images. The tonal range speaks for itself. I just was not as aggressive as you were with your images. My purpose was to present something that would evoke response in the viewer, and I accomplished that. Whats interesting is the number of different perceptions that have surfaced. There are those who have claimed that there was no thought in my image, but if you look at the photo( whether it is bad or good) the key elements are there. Maybe there should be more discussion about what the viewer is supposed to see when they look at an image. There is always supposed to be something the draws the viewers eyes to it. The image I posted has that. I wonder how many would admit, that they looked at this poor quality image more than once. Sometimes it more about what an image says, then it is about the technical quality of it. Its funny, abstract art is like that too at times.

Best regards

Jason

The dialated pupil was probably from all the sinus and allergy medication she had been taking. She had a very bad allergy day yesterday. If girlfriends count at family members than I guess she could qualify for that, and no she was not forced to take this photo or sit for it. I guess in a way I am pretty lucky. As I expand and continue to learn, my girlfriend has taken an interest herself and is learning to become a makeup artist.

Good luck with your in-house model. Mine has a hard time
getting to relax or look naturel unless she's holding a prop
(the cat).
By the way, I thought that this post was some kind of experiment.
Were you expecting some specific reaction or were you just asking
for technical feedback?

Just because something does not work in colour, why does someone say to try B&W? It does not work in B&W either. Too little contrast to work with. Try again.
