Hi,

I am looking for cheap options for my Leica Q camera.

I like the Q Protector but just cannot justify the price tag. I looked at Chinese stores on eBay but there is nothing available...

Any help would be great!

Thanks!

Cheap option ? Cheap might be relative for a 4000$ camera.

At that price tag sincerely, i wouldn't mind spending 300$ on a case, but that's just my opinion.

Would you put cheap tries on a Ferrari? Seriously, it's a $4k camera and deserves something nice.

...... but unlikely to be a resounding success. "Cheap" and "Leica" are seldom seen in the same sentence.

On the other hand, if you mean something just to keep it from banging around, you might find some success in the neoprene rangefinder case from Op-Tech.

The camera may stop working in protest, LOL...

Seriously, if I had the money for a $4K fixed-lens camera, I wouldn't be too concerned about the cost of a case.

Would you wear old army boots with a tux?

For my Leica M9P, I have a Luigi with a built in grip. I'll admit I went overboard, but it looks great and feels outstanding. For my X2, I recently bought a Gariz, but only because it has access to the battery and card door. I doesn't feel great and it doesn't look so good, but it is practical and provides some protection. I paid less than $1000 for the X2 used so I didn't want to go overboard on the case price.. If you want a really great case at a lesser cost, look into the Asian made Ciesta

or Artist and Artisan. They are well made, have nice soft leather and look good.

The Leica case is only $130 at B&H. It doesn't look so good but it will protect the camera.

Enjoy wearing sneakers with your Brioni suit.

You made me curious: I looked up the price of the Leica Protector case for the Q: $150.00.

Even inexpensive, crappy half-cases that don't fit right cost $50-$100. I've had a couple of those; all they do, after making you a bit crazy trying to use them, is make a good one that fits correctly and doesn't get in the way more expensive when you toss cheapo into the garbage.

Save some money: buy the Leica Protector, or just get used to not having a case and put the camera in a Domke wrap when you want to protect it. Consider the Leica Protector a long term purchase that adds value to your Q.

I hope that helps.

As commented by others, saving few dollars after getting a >$4k camera is not going to make the difference.

Anyway, as per what I've found around, the Leica protective case is indeed the cheapest offer around. IMHO, though, it's simply ugly and, thinking again to the concept of "dressing" properly such an expensive jewel camera, I'd say the Q deserves something really pretty.

A factor that has to be considered is that, differently from the M, I consider the design/finish of the Q not iconically retro, but neoclassic. A very vintage looking case, accordingly, doesn't do the job IMHO. Anyway, the cases that are on the market from Angelo Pelle and Luigi's Leicatime (which are probably some of the brands that are more traditionally linked to Leica) maybe look too vintage. Also, I don't get this thing of the metal grip on the Angelo case...

Arte di Mano (which is Korean and not Italian) makes 2 different cases, one with minimal added grip and one with a more consistent one. The former is what I consider the nicest Q case around yet, but it is truly expensive. For the M, Arte di Mano makes also a case that covers the camera plus the multifunctional grip: a Q version might see the light.

Gariz has not announced a case for the Q yet, but it will jump for sure on the bandwagon. Gariz cases tend to be way cheaper than the offers from Luigi, Angelo and Arte di Mano; also, they are intrinsically modern (but they cover less...) and they could make a nice fit for the Q. Personally, I find the Black Label series one for the M very good looking, and I expect Gariz to release a similarly designed one for the Q.

So, if you're concerned or cannot make your mind yet, just wait if Gariz released one (I guess you could email them to inquire): it might be the most affordable but still good looking one.

Thank you all for your comments.

But I just don't want to spend more money on a case that will have no effect on the photos I am gonna take. I don't care much whether it is for a Leica, Canon or Nikon.

Here is an example I found on ebay, but it is not for Q.

Typ 109 Case

Thanks once again for your inputs.

YOu buy a case to protect your camera from wear and tear, not to improve your photos. Don't conflate thesee things, it doesn't make sense.

Buy a $25 Zing neoprene case and use scissors and glue to modify it until it fits. It'll be a POS but it seems you don't care that you'll be making your $4500 camera into a POS that's a pain to use.

To each their own.

Ok, that's what I wrote. I guess you were in a hurry when reading it.

Why it is a **requirement** to use an expensive case with an expensive camera? I don't get it, i don't care how it looks like, or what others think, all I care is protect it from normal wear/tear.

Thanks

Isn't it obvious in the case of Leica? You bought at least in large part a 'lifestyle' machine. Don't even try and pretend otherwise.

It's like Apple users who stick Dell monitors on their Macs and use open source software because they spent all their money on the core thing that looks pretty. It's a moronic approach. In for a penny, in for a pound. I'm not saying it's a functionally better approach, I'm saying there's ultimately less point buying into the ethos of a brand if you're not all-in.

It's not a requirement to use an expensive case, but it's common sense to use a well designed, well made case that works properly and doesn't damage the camera, that protects the camera while preserving its feel and quality of use.

Leica cameras, even the X and Q, are relatively low production pieces. So most cases made for them are low volume production bits, mostly made by hand, and most people buying Leicas want good quality pieces that look good as well as work well.

$150 is not particularly expensive for a case. The Nikon case for my F6 is $84, and it isn't even leather, and no one makes a half case for it. I consider $84 for a synthetic material, awkward to use, never-ready case pretty expensive.

I got this case (brown) for my 109 and am quite happy with it. Fits well, leather is thick, heavy, gives the camera good protection. You have option of either removing the front part or keeping it on and flipping it open for shooting (still faster than getting the body from a bag).

So, just wait for the 116 case version.

There's apparently a bunch of companies in China that's churning out different takes on the same design for all compact cameras.

I got one of the RX100MIII in my great case hunt last year, and IMO If you're buying into Leica, you will not want to buy into this piece of crap - it's fine as a tide me over but compared to the ODM cases there is no thought behind the design, and it's ridiculously heavy for what crap it is.
