3D printed MZD 7-14 Lee 100mm holder adapter works!

Very clever ...

I don't use these, but I used to :)

Nice work so far.

if you make a production model, I'd be interested. I don't have the lens yet, so I can't be a beta tester, but I am planning to purchase one.

The two final prototypes are in production. Hope to receive them the Monday or Thursday next week.

If they are working well, I will considering commercialize it.

Another thing is that I am designing the filter slot for MZD7-14, I hope get a design without vignette at 7mm with 3 filters. If I am fast enough, they will be a pack.

Now, there are two options for me:

1.Kickstart for a batch of 100 or 50.

2.Via Shapeways.

The adapter needs some extra work to make it usable, so the printing it self is not enough.

If we go for Kickstart, the risk is that we don't have enough people want it. and the production of a batch of 100, will take a months long. The quantity will be limited. The advantage is I will make all prepared for you.

If we go for Shapeways, you need do some simple diy work and need to collect some sealing material yourself. The quality of printing is assured, but the shipping cost be be a littler high for the world except North Amercia, Europe and Australia.

I won't publish the 3D file directly, because the choice of printer and the material is important, it will have impact directly on the size and the fragility of the object.

Any ideas?

I have designed a filter slot for 7-14mm, don't know if it will be working well. A little hard to do, but I got one.

The two production prototypes are on the way home, I will get them monday!

Excited!

This looks so much better than my effort with the HiTech adapter.

Your idea of the furniture felt is clever. My problem with the HiTech filter was it was too bulky and the rails were evident with the smallest of rotation. I am therefore very interested in your rails and set-up if rotation is possible. When I contacted Lee filters a while ago they said it maybe was not possible but I don't think they were planning on changing their rails or such a simple system of attachment as yours.

Well done so far....

I can confirm you something.

1. On Lee holder, The 100mm is not enough for the whole focus range of 7mm with 3 filters on, it's just enough for focus further than 1m, for closer focuses the filter itself is too narrow(so I can see the white edges in the picture). My rails is on the way of making, I hope it works with Lee under condition that focus is further than 1m, perhaps with rotation(not sure). Hitech filter is 1mm thiner than Lee Holder, so 3mm thiner in total, that's a great advantage here, perhaps worth trying it.

2. I don't know if Lee rails can be used with Hitech holder, if you have parameter, I can make a version so that you can have a try.

Thanks,

I am looking forward to your results.

Have just got the two production prototypes, both are working well!

Here's the picture taken with them, almost no dark edge at 7mm!(Means a little)

It's the first prototype

This is the second prototype, the difference is the shape of rear part.

I will sell the first prototype on ebay later. For the others, they will be sold on shapeways. You need some DIY skills to make it working but it's easy. Though, the first batch (5-10 pieces) will be sold as beta test, I need some feedback to improve them.

My customized slot is on the way, I will get them on Wednesday, perhaps they could be available as a pack. But so far I don't know if it will be good working.

It looks very neat, better than my old 7-14 cap and HiTech adaption. Like yours I doubt that you can rotate it.

The problem with mine is that I cannot always guarantee it is on straight, I think your lugs certainly sort that problem.

My slight concern is security, the amount of material over the lens looks narrow, how firm is it attached to the lens and would a wind (I have been to some windy places) dislodge its alignment?

Well done so far anyhow

The customised slot for the filters may be the winner as if it is slightly shorter than the Lee, then a small amount of rotation may be feasible

Some foam are filled between the adapter and the lens, it seals the adapter and fix the adapter tightly. The problem is how tight it should be, that's why beta test are needed. I am measuring the prototype and estimate a good size for beta testers, then they will be available on Shapeways for making.

The old four thirds lens cap (with the under-furniture felt lining) was quite secure but is 2cm deep and reaches to the light blue recessed band on the lens. I feel this is secure. Yours looks to be about 1 or less cm. Yours has better advantages for storage though

I made an adapter with original lens cap for my old 7-14mm too, in fact I found it not fully sealed, there is a small gap but enough to let the light go in, for example the focus assistance light of my E-M1 can travel through it. Sometimes in the afternoon, when the sun is after me, I need to put my hand over the "adapter converted from lens cap“ for my old 7-14 to prevent too much light goes into it.

When I got my MZD at first time, I turned it into one for it, I just filled some soft material inside, make it tight, sealed!

Mine is only 0.5cm deep for the rear part, it's enough because it's fully sealed. No light can travel through it, I am almost confident with it

I don't have any yet, but do the Lee filters fit the HiTech rails/holder?

Reading through your thread I suspect not and that is why you made the adapter.

The advantage of the HiTech holder is that it fitted without light leak between the lenscap and filter holder, the Lee holder has a wider gap - hence the light leak, however I really would like to use Lee filters esp the Big Stopper as in my opinion it is better than the HiTech (not blue).

The new prototype looks good! I would only make the part that is in contact with the lens (sleeve) longer than the 10mm (about) what it is now. Looking at the photo's there is room enough.

I would be interested in Beta testing the holder, I've constructed a holder with a Cokin universal ring and Lee WA adaptor ring so I would be very keen to compare the 2.

Cheers
