I never did get it working with Windows 7, but it seems that EOS Utility 3 is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.11. I installed 10.10 to an external drive and was able to get it to work from there.I can't get tethering to work with the 5Ds.
As per my forum thread on Canon's forum, I can't get EOS Utility to do anything. Did you have to do anything special? I've never used it before for any other camera so don't even know how it's supposed to behave. Both the 5DS and R tether with Lightroom 6 using the latest Canon EOS Utility. Be sure and download the latest EOS Utility and you will have no problem. Consider you will find the files to be a challenge for a less than optimum computer.
Are you writing this from direct personal experience with a 5Ds? Because when I try there are no cameras in the list. I haven't been able to find any documentation on Adobe's website claiming 5Ds tether support (only RAW files support). I'm using LR 6.2.Lightroom does not use EOS Utility in it's native tether. You have limited functionality with LR tether, but it does allow you to shoot directly into Lightroom. Go to File/Tether Capture/Start Tether Capture. LR will look for cameras attached to the computer and give you a list if more than one is. Select the 5Ds.
I've tried with both the CD version and latest version from the website. Doesn't work. My hardware seems fine because Mac OS X/ Windows both detect the camera bringing up their own generic file importers.I too have had lots of problems getting EOS Utility to work on some machines. It seems to be very sensitive to the OS particularly on Macs. Canon has not always included their latest software with new cameras. I would, if you haven't already, done a Canon site search for 5Ds software and download whatever is on the site.
I had no problem getting it to work with a desktop and the two laptops I tried in DPP4. LR6 though was a fail. It oscillated between no camera detected and detecting the 5DS. Couldn't do anything with it.I can't get tethering to work with the 5Ds.

What info did you see that makes you think it should? https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support-lightroom-4.html does not list the 5Ds. It does list other recent cameras.I know LR 5.7 doesn't support the 5Ds and I have no idea if LR 6.1 does. Based on Adobe's info, it should.
Yes, Utility 3. Canon support's first suggestion was to reinstall and reboot and I've done that to no avail.Tethering is working without any problems with my 5dsr and a windows 7 computer. Are you using utility3?
It's for 6 as well. It specifies v6 as the minimum required for some of the cameras it lists as supported. The Adobe link is for LR 3,4,and 5.
Recent updates are regarding 5Ds RAW file format support, not tethering. In any case, I'm using the latest version of everything.Only LR 6 and CC support the Canon 5Ds, or at least that is implied by the recent update to both LR 6 and ACR. Have you updated both?
