Hi All

having been persuaded by the assembled company . . . . my 17"powerbook comes tomorrow!!!

I'll want to transfer all the stuff from my current 12" G4 powerbook (including applications, itunes library, iphoto etc.etc.)

Please - could anyone tell me, is there an easy way to do this, so that I don't have to re-install everything? I'm pretty sure that there is, but I'd love a bit of expert help.

I have a separate firewire drive which is big enough to take everything! (normally I use folders synchronizer for backup)

kind regards
thanks in advance

To use FireWire target disk mode

1. Make sure that the target computer is turned off. If you are using a PowerBook computer or iBook computer as the target computer, you should also plug in its AC power adapter.

2. Use a FireWire cable (6-pin to 6-pin) to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer does not need to be turned off.

3. Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop.

4. When you are finished copying files, drag the target computer's hard disk icon to the Trash or select Put Away from the File menu (Mac OS 9) or Eject from the File menu (Mac OS X).

5. Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.

6. Unplug the FireWire cable.

If you transfer "photo", "music", and "movie" folders, does the new computer mimic the old one. In other words, is it that simple? The reason I'm asking is that I have the same dilemna (trading up to a newer mac) and I have about 20GBs of songs in iTunes and untold GB's of photos.

TIA,
Mark

If you want to copy everything and be bootable, you can get there by using target mode and "Carbon Copy Cloner" which can be found at http://www.bombich.com I use this for my backups to create bootable drives. The program can also do less than bootable, i.e. selected directories. It may be better than straight copying in target mode because I'm not sure what happens to permissions when you copy things owned by the system like applications. When I switched recently, I copied data and reinstalled applications and such. Good luck. Leon
Hi All......

Assuming you don't already have another means of networking your Macs (such as a hub), pick up an ethernet crossover cable. Plug one end into each Mac's ethernet port. Get on the old Mac, and open the Finder's Go menu. Click on server, and wait a few seconds until it finds the other Mac. Drag your files to the new Mac.

It'll be slower than the Firewire method, but the cable will be cheaper--and probably more useful in the long run.

HI

I do have a network connection, and I can easily copy the files via firewire (i.e. I don't have a problem copying data).

What I was interested in was being able to copy settings etc. so that I don't have to reinstall all my software, mail, network settings etc. etc..

Hi Jason

Can your technique be used to transfer between ibook and a windows laptop. If so can you outline the proceduere. I cannot find the Go menu under the finder. I am using ibook under OS9.1.

The Go menu is in OS X. Sorry, it's been too long since I've used OS 9. I don't have OS 9 on my machines anymore, so I can't try it. I know you can network Mac OS with Windows, but I don't know if you can do it with a crossover cable. Try http://www.macfixit.com . You should be able to find a solution there.

Copy your Home and Applications folders along with all the Libraries and Preferences folders to the new PB. That should do the trick for most, if not all of your files and settings.

I do not think it is going to be that easy. Most apps will go over but some will not and need to be reinstalled. I would not reinstall any apps that are on the new machine out of the box. I would run the software update and get the latest versions that way. Your new computer will set up its own iphoto and itunes library so I think you will nees to do some importing for that.

Print out your mail settings and set up from scratch. You can try to find the library file that has all your old emails but this is a little tricky two. If you have a .mac account you can use isync to sync your address book and Safari Favorites with .mac and then sync new powerbook with .mac and you should get your entire address book on you new machine.

Look at the bright side. You are getting to do all this on a 17" Powerbook. It could be worse. You could be setting up a windows machine.

You can decide how much Carbon Copy should clone, only your home-folder or the whole system with preferences, software et al.

I've done that several times when I had my computer in for repair and had to move my data between two computers.

Actually, I don't think the newer systems need crossover cables. I think they can figure out what is going on and get it right with an ordinary cable. Confirm before you try it. Leon

Agree with PowerPet. I use Carbon Copy Cloner frequently. If the OS versions are the same between the new and old, then (assuming you have a software install cd for the new system just in case) Carbon Copy from old to new. Carbon Copy will take care of the permissions thing and also bless the new drive so that it will boot. I would also ensure that the old drive has been checked and permissions repair has been run before doing the copy. If the OS is not the same, you might be able to clone the old system and then upgrade it on the new system. For OS 10.2.x versions, this should work. It probably won't between 10.1.x and 10.2.x. When I went to 10.2, I had to reinstall everything. 10.2 would not reliably install over 10.1. Best of luck. Leon

TRY USIING CLONE X
http://www.tri-edre.com/english/cloner.html (30 trial)

Just remember that if your old computer is running OS9, clonex will clone that, and it will not work on your 17" since the 17" will not boot into OS9. Good Luck

I will add my vote for this wonderful software. I took my month old iBook back because a small problem and they gave me a new one. I had installed all kinds of stuff and upgraded from 10.2.4 to 10.2.6. The Carbon Copy Cloner installed over the new book with the earlier version of the OS without a hitch. Good stuff.

HI There

Well, I'm writing this in my hotel room on my new 17" powerbook (my, isn't that screen big!).

I copied the whole contents of my hard disc (on the 12") to a firewire drive using folders synchroniser (which I had previously been using for backups).

I then set up the new powerbook and updated the operating system to 10.2.6 (from 4). I used the same user name as on the 12"

I then copied the whole of the user directory to the new powerbook from the firewire drive, and the application library files in the root directory, together with the applications from the application folder on the old system.

So far everything seems to be working well i.e.

my IE favorites are all there
my mail and calendar and address book are all there
all applications so far are working without needing to be reinstalled:
InDesign
Office X
Photoshop
Dreamweaver (together with all site definitions)

Virtual PC (it didn't start up from the saved state, I had to start from scratch, but all data seems to be properly saved).

I guess it took me 5 hours (4 of which were spent sitting in a deckchair in the garden waiting for the next bit to copy).

The only things I had to set up were the network connections.

A result I'd say!

Your network connections would have been there and I'm sure you'll run into some gliches along the line. I'm always amazed by people that ask experts for their opinion and then don't take the advice. Most of the people suggested CCC and you chose the route least recommended. Why do we bother?

why give him a hard time about it? First of all, your statement that "most of the people suggested CCC" is wrong. Before your own post which was made after he did his transfer only 4 people suggested CCC out of 15 posts - that's not a majority. Second of all, if however he did his procedure worked than that's all that counts. From what I can gather he actually used somewhat of a combination of other various suggestions people made so he wasn't ignoring their posts either. the bottom line is that he was able to successfully transfer his information from the first computer to the second and get everything running as he wished and that's all that counts. Just be glad for him and wish him luck on his new PB.

Jono - I'm jealous. I wish I had a new 17" PB also! :) I'm still running my "old" G4 400 AGP that's going on almost 4 years now. I think I'll get a new G5 but i'll wait until the 2nd generation models just to avoid the "bugs" that are usually present in new models. Good luck with your PB
