My 26 years with Canon may come to an end. Not really but...

For the first time, I'm looking at having my main body be a non-Canon body, the Sony A7RII. I will keep my Canon bodies.

I do mostly wildlife and nature photography, the 600mm f/4 II is my go-to lens, and I've got the 5D3 and 7D2 (and 4 GoPros, 2 drones).

I love both the 5D3 and 7D2, but after shooting 4K with my DJI Inspire and viewing it on my 5K monitor, I need to have the capability to shoot in 4K as well as take great photos.

I can definitely split the tasks with one body for still and one for video, but it seems that one doesn't have to with the Sony.

I have been really concerned about the pace of technology innovation with Canon. Wireless is an expensive add-on? GPS finally shows up in 7D2? Mirrorless tech is still on the horizon? You can shoot in 1080p, but not 4K?

If I can hear that I can use the 600mm f/4 II (and extenders) with the Sony A7RII with focus on par with the 5D3, I think it will be time to switch over.

Well, I wouldnt worry about it. You dont have to invest in lenses, when you buy an A7RII with adapter.

In the future, if Canon's next FF camera has the features you are looking for... just buy that body and sell your A7RII. Thats the freedom that comes with the A7Rii, you are not tied to specific lenses.

Exactly, that's the cool thing about Sony, you can mount pretty much any SLR and RF lenses on it. Exactly what I am going to do, been shooting with Canon and Nikon for over 25 years and have bunch of lenses, no plan to dump anything and switching to anything, will just purchase a Sony A7R II and just use every single lens I have in the house, Zeiss, Canon, Nikon, Samyang, Sigma Tamron.....I am so used to manual focus and that's how I shoot 99% of time anyway regardless it's a manual focus Zeiss or super fast EF, I am a landscape guy, it will be even easier to do MF on the Sony than my 1DS3 and D800E when I am not on tripod say shooting events and portraits, and I can even do AF with the Metabone adapter with EF lenses too if I actually care for AF. I read someone tried it and said it was actually pretty fast and actually usable, so that's a bonus for me. But I do understand for those mainly shooting in AF mode and/or want to only have the native mount lens this Sony system is very limiting.

Canon could become the world's largest third-party lens manufacturer? ;-)

Canon, could potentially, make an EOS EF-to-Sony adapter, perhaps even cooperating with Sony in that venture, shutting Metabones out of the equation, if there is a way around the applicable patents.

Just a thought...

I don't argue at all with your decision. It's yours, probably very reasonable in your circumstances and you are certainly entitled to it. But what's the point of airing all this in public?

Are you looking for support to validate your decision?

Are you angry that somehow Canon are letting you down and you want someone to blame?

Are you cross that you no longer feel top dog and that someone is going to have 'better' equipment than you've got?

When you switch cars do you go and stand in the dealership and announce to everyone in the showroom what you intend to do?

Are you hoping someone at Canon will read your post and think "Oh no, we can't annoy Aargau1-san. We must change our global product strategy immediately!"?

Or do just want to vent because your day could have gone better?

Help me out here - why do you guys do this?

Yeah, the sony AR7II thread are getting kinda tiring.. Let's get back to talking about the 5d4 and whether it will have 4k or not; or even if it will be released this year(some are speculating release date of early NEXT year) Or lets talk about the 5DS and EOS 5DS R. I heard they had 12 stops.. or was it only 10 stops of dynamic range?

Let's be honest. There isn't really anything newsworthy in the Canon field right now. Besides, I think a lot of long time canon users are thinking about switching to sony and yeah, they probably want some public validation especially if they have been canon users for years and years. It's kinda sad state of affairs for Canon especially since this is a canon forum, but a lot of it's users are discussing sony.

for that to happen sony would actually have to start selling the A series in volume. they haven't to date, and probably won't with this one either.

OK, it's just a thought I appreciate that, but do you really think it's likely?
Well, that first sentence, in particular, was largely tongue-in-cheek, but if enough buyers use their Canon lenses on Sony bodies, while Canon cameras sit on shelves, unsold, that would be the effective outcome.

radio based speedlights... who the hell else has them?
GPS finally shows up in 7D2?
it's been on canon bodies before then.
Mirrorless tech is still on the horizon? You can shoot in 1080p, but not 4K?
canon already has a DSLR that shoots 4K - the first of it's kind actually.

good luck with that.

that little tiny battery I'm sure will drive that 600/4 L II just nicely i'm sure.

Good luck with that you are years away from contrast AF matching phase detect AF when it comes to speed and tracking ability and do you really expect the battery in the Sony to be able to drive the lens elements of your 600. I shot with a 7DMK II the other day on my 500 and the first thing i noticed was the slower initial focus lock do to the smaller amperage of the battery not being able to drive the elements as fast as my 1D camera.

These threads are becoming very tiring and largely off topic.
I find them neither tiring nor off-topic at all. This is the canon forum, you know.
Canon, and mostly nobody really cares what you spend your money on.
Really? Canon doesn't care? They only do business for fun?

And why would other Canon users not like to hear about his situation with his Canon gear?
Announcing in a threat like manner that you're buying another product is a very diva-like attitude? Are you a diva?
It was most definitely not threat like. If anything then the opposite. Are you by instance threatened by someone ditching something you loveand and therefore respond like Pavlovs little puppy?

;-)

I for one am very strongly considering a move to Sony as well, therefore I do find threads from others that intend to do the same and their reasoning for why very interesting.

I'm ok with one topic where people vent their frustrations, for whatever reason, but so many topics about a Sony product is off-topic by all accounts. Unfortunately the mods seem to be on vacation.

I'm pretty sure Canon execs are losing sleep because some folks on the internet are going to buy a 3200$ Sony camera.

Everyone can do whatever they find entertaining but this is a bit much.

Good riddance my friend. I will surely not miss another sheep-like attitude on this forum.

How many decent photographs have you heard blaming their gear in public? Attention seekers on the other hand....

sorry but i have to answer:

if you own all these cameras and monitors which looks like most of them are highend..not sure why buying sony( dont get me wrong sony is excellent too) but if you are looking specifically to shot 4K, how about inema EOS Cameras:

Posts about people moving, or considering a move to another brand because Canon is failing to give them what they need are extremely on-topic.

Well, I'm definitely NOT switching to Sony or anything else from Canon and am more or less committed to buying one of the 5DSs soon. I just ordered a Dell 5K monitor so am anxious to see how my existing 5D2 images look on that first.

However, I do like the idea of having the option to use Canon lenses on another manufacturer's body with an adapter but would have to be sure IQ wasn't compromised too much. IQ is more important than any other consideration for me - Wi-Fi, swivel LCD or whatever.

Do adapters like the Metabones do that? They have glass elements so assume there would be some trade off similar to using a teleconverter. It would be nice if Canon saw fit to get in on this market but, then again, why would they encourage the use of another manufacture's body?
