And I'll keep in simple terms. This seems really shameless to me. Do you think they sold even one in the history of the company? I feel like hitting the person who bought it.

Nicely said Danny - priorities and affordability. And I'll keep in simple terms. This seems really shameless to me. Do you think they sold even one in the history of the company? I feel like hitting the person who bought it.

One photographer says to another ...
"How come you can afford over $30,000 in cameras and lenses"
The answer was a simple one ....
"How come you drive around in a BMW while I drive around in a rusty van with $30,000 worth of gear in it"
Problem solved.
I guess if you're unlucky enough to somehow damage the hood for a $9,000 (or $11,500 for the II version) lens there's little choice. I doubt there are any 3rd party hoods available. This seems really shameless to me. Do you think they sold even one in the history of the company? I feel like hitting the person who bought it.

Prices on their consumer-grade lens hoods are ridiculous as well when you look at the prices based on % of cost of the lens.Yeah but, I mean... most people don't get rich by just throwing it away >_<
If you try to sell me saran wrap for $82 a roll, I won't buy it on general principle even if I can afford it... it's silly. Apparently the price is because it's carbon fiber.
The 400mm f/2.8 hood is $840 LOL.
For that much, I can pay someone $10 an hour to hold their hands up and block the sun, for my next 84 hours of photography.
Look around, there may be alternatives for some hoods. But consider how many of these a company will sell, the low volume is a major factor in the cost. This is a great opportunity for a third-party mfg to come up with a cheaper hood. How hard could it be...
For super teles, I doubt it - there wouldn't be enough sales to be worth it.I was just thinking the second group, but I could also hit the guys who can afford 12,000 lenses, out of sheer angry envy.
Not really of course! I'd buy one if I could.
I figured the lens was expensive not just "Because we can" but also because apparently they need to grow some special big fluorite crystals or maybe do some ultra precision work to get get some giant pieces of glass flawless enough to work at 600mm ranges.
But this lens hood price feels like kind of a middle finger. I wonder if there's an untapped niche market for third party hood manufacturers?
Sales forecasts would tell you it's not worth it.This is a great opportunity for a third-party mfg to come up with a cheaper hood. How hard could it be...
Agree, the volume is too low for a 3rd party to consider it.For super teles, I doubt it - there wouldn't be enough sales to be worth it.I was just thinking the second group, but I could also hit the guys who can afford 12,000 lenses, out of sheer angry envy.

You're making sense, from one working man to another, but you also have no clue about how rich "rich" can be today. I have a family in residence that can barely make their maintenance & mortgage payments, while another family orders $200-$500 in take-out nearly every night (no exaggeration).Yeah but, I mean... most people don't get rich by just throwing it away >_<

That's the way I look at it. If you can afford the lens, you can afford the hood. It’s a $11,499.00 lens. Maybe. This seems really shameless to me. Do you think they sold even one in the history of the company? I feel like hitting the person who bought it.

I think when I get married, I'm gonna give her a lens hood instead of a wedding ring. Those hoods were always outrageously priced. I spent two hours 10 years ago scrambling on a craggy tor to retrieve a 100-400 lens hood that got away from me. 15+ years ago Canon owners were complaining of the same thing. It is what it is, you just are learning about what it's like.
LOL! That sounds like a great idea. I'm going too.If I lose that lens hood, I'm going to fly to zurich and park cars for a few months.
You HAVE to provide a ring. But you might utilize the hood in a prenuptual agreement (you get the hood, she keeps the house and car should you ever part).I think when I get married, I'm gonna give her a lens hood instead of a wedding ring. Those hoods were always outrageously priced. It'd be a lot harder to find a dropped wedding ring.
Well looking at your gear, your gallery (0), your question and your comments in this thread, I'm sort of wondering if you actually have an inferiority complex ;-)

You don't need to, you just enjoy what you take and do and leave the expensive lenses to those that actually need them. Obviously you don't![]()
Ah, but there is a 3rd party who makes one: Lenscoat Travel HoodAgree, the volume is too low for a 3rd party to consider it.For super teles, I doubt it - there wouldn't be enough sales to be worth it.I was just thinking the second group, but I could also hit the guys who can afford 12,000 lenses, out of sheer angry envy.

Isn't 'carbon fiber', marketing speak for expensive plastic? I mean it's just the spiritual cousin of 'Corinthian Leather' when you think about it.Yeah but, I mean... most people don't get rich by just throwing it away >_<

Yeah, but don't forget payroll taxes and the employer's share of the social security payments! The 400mm f/2.8 hood is $840 LOL.
