Wow, these are beautiful shots, Erik! I never heard about this area. I think we need to look into visiting.
Take care,

It's well worth a visit, Daniel - and equally easy to visit from hotels if that is your preference, unlike some places which are hard to reach that way. We like to camp in our van, but a bit of a drive from even the strip gets one there easily - Exit 75 from I-15.Wow, these are beautiful shots, Erik! I never heard about this area. I've loved the desert sinc I first saw it from my first car while in the Navy at Port Hueneme.Fantastic images Erik!!! They say the desert isn't for everyone but I think it's beautiful. I love the way the colors changes with the sun angle.

I just discovered it is east of Las Vegas. Looks a place to visit along with the Grand Canyon. I am a bit embarassed to admit this, but I have never been to the Grand Canyon. Mindy and Marissa did a mother-daughter trip there one year, but I have never made the trip myself. I think it's something I should do before.... I have never been to Yellowstone either (where Mindy and Marissa also did a trip together). I have been to other amazing National Parks, but not these two. Anyhow, this particular place looks very special and away from the maddening crowds. It's well worth a visit, Daniel - and equally easy to visit from hotels if that is your preference, unlike some places which are hard to reach that way. The scenery varies with each passing cloud.
I'm finally reading "The Elephant Whisperer" which the library finally disgorged - wish I'd had it on this trip(a wonderful "read").

Thanks for the Personal Message - I guess I missed this answer. I may well have been there, coming south out of the fabulous Joshua Tree NP on a very hot day, it didn't look as good as your photos ;-)Painted Canyon is within the Mecca Hills Wilderness, southeast of Indio. I was there earlier this year scouting it out for a group camping trip this fall. I was fortunate to get some nice late afternoon light. These were taken very close to the eastern California border and I'm curious - where in California is there that much color - I thought I knew California pretty well ;-)Hello Erik,
The colors in the first photograph are stunning. It reminds me of the painted canyon areas of eastern California.
