Some desert images with the pocket camera.

Wow, these are beautiful shots, Erik! I never heard about this area. I think we need to look into visiting.

Take care,

Daniel

Fantastic images Erik!!! They say the desert isn't for everyone but I think it's beautiful. I love the way the colors changes with the sun angle.

It's well worth a visit, Daniel - and equally easy to visit from hotels if that is your preference, unlike some places which are hard to reach that way. We like to camp in our van, but a bit of a drive from even the strip gets one there easily - Exit 75 from I-15.

The scenery varies with each passing cloud.

I'm finally reading "The Elephant Whisperer" which the library finally disgorged - wish I'd had it on this trip :-) (a wonderful "read").

I've loved the desert sinc I first saw it from my first car while in the Navy at Port Hueneme.

We moved west from Annapolis to be closer to the SW deserts.

I just discovered it is east of Las Vegas. Looks a place to visit along with the Grand Canyon. I am a bit embarassed to admit this, but I have never been to the Grand Canyon. Mindy and Marissa did a mother-daughter trip there one year, but I have never made the trip myself. I think it's something I should do before.... I have never been to Yellowstone either (where Mindy and Marissa also did a trip together). I have been to other amazing National Parks, but not these two. Anyhow, this particular place looks very special and away from the maddening crowds.

That's wonderful that you got the Elephant Whisperer. Be warned, you may get the Thula Thula bug after you finish it. If you decide to go, let me know. South Africa is pretty, pretty special.

Thanks for posting these images and opening my mind to somewhere not to far from our own beautiful back yard.

Take care,

Daniel

Hello Erik,

The colors in the first photograph are stunning. It reminds me of the painted canyon areas of eastern California.

- Richard
These were taken very close to the eastern California border and I'm curious - where in California is there that much color - I thought I knew California pretty well ;-)
Painted Canyon is within the Mecca Hills Wilderness, southeast of Indio. I was there earlier this year scouting it out for a group camping trip this fall. I was fortunate to get some nice late afternoon light.

I have a few photographs here:

Thanks for the Personal Message - I guess I missed this answer. I may well have been there, coming south out of the fabulous Joshua Tree NP on a very hot day, it didn't look as good as your photos ;-)

#2 looks very familiar.

Great panoramas series Erik! Thanks for sharing :-)

Daniel - if you haven't yet experienced Grand Canyon, I'd suggest doing the North Rim - much less crowded, higher elevation for great views and cooler temperatures.

Also, It's close to all sorts of wonderful things in southern Utah - Zion, Antelope Canyon and the Grand Staircase-Escalante area. It is really amazing, particularly once one "wraps one's mind" around the fact that that whole area IS geologically the Grand Canyon - the one in the park is really only the inner canyon.

Excellent shots Erik!! I really love the color of those dark skies and the richness of the rock colors. The B&W I think is my favorite, but I also like the long road shot. Oh what the H... I like them all the same. :)
