Lake Opuha?

Lake Opuha?
Sorry Mike, but nowhere near Lake Opuha (Which BTW has shrunk this year with the local drought). The lake we are looking for is in a different hemisphere and was also formed as a reservoir but is quite a bit larger. It also has a much warmer climate, which suits the annual triathlon held there.

Is Lake Kariba in the Northern Hemisphere (I didn't get where I am today by ignoring hints LOL)

Hmm, Kielder Water? It had better not be Farmoor, about 20km from where I lived for 30-odd years of my life!

Now you need to go about 8,000km slightly south of west, you could actually fly in.

Lake Tahoe? (because of your hints: triathlon and the Tahoe Airport)

free turn in case it is right

I’ve been to Lake Tahoe Hans and the scenery there is much greener and far more picturesque. Tahoe is much older (about 2 million years) and was not formed by a man-made dam, as is the one we are looking for. You need to move southwards and think of a big river with many dams that eventually turns into a dribble.

Lake Mead, near Las Vegas, Nevada?

It is a reservoir of the Colorado River, which empties into the Gulf of California.

Good guess Mark, but not quite there. The right river but the wrong lake, and there are photos of the lakeside accommodation to be found.
