a6000 arrived. First impressions from a Nikon user...

With Focus Assist on, you only need to touch the lens' zoom/focus ring to have Live View go into the zoomed focus point view.
I forgot to add that the AF mode has to be in DMF for this to work. Sorry

Thank you
Russell

Use digital zoom on a marginal lens like that 16mm pancake, and you really are in the cell-phone-like image quality zone. Not what this camera was bought for, I hope.

Hopefully this post doesn't come across as "another one of those"...

I ordered the a6000 w/ SEP1650PZ from best buy

Focus seems to be quick, really quick, in good lighting. Though, in low-light, it doesn't lock on the focus point and often defaults to the larger area (seems to be equivalent to a focus "guess"). My D7100 can focus in near black comparatively.
Try turning off the focus assist light -- counterintuitively, that seems to improve low light focus (though maybe firmware 1.21 may change that).
FW 1.20 (and 1.21) repared the faulty focus assist light (at last). So it is better to switch it on, your camera can now focus in the dark!

Turning off the Settings Effect will leave the lens at its largest aperture until the shutter is activated allowing more light into the camera for AF. This is also how DSLRs work. The EVF just gives extra functionality where having the lens stop down allows showing the image in the EVF, or on the LCD, as it would be captured. In low light though, this functionality gets in the way, and needs to be turned off.

Thank you
Russell
That's a great tip, Russell, I've had the camera for a year and it never occurred to me to do that. Thanks!

OK, I'm on 1.2, so I'll try turning it back on again.

Didn't know that, either. Wow, two very helpful tips in one thread!

The kit does come from Sony with front and back lens caps. Your "open Box" just didn't include them.

Indeed. Right after I saw this I turned it off.

I did my research on this one and the kit definitely does not include the caps. I would have returned it and reordered if they weren't included due to "open box."
Try one of these, extends battery life x2 and gives good balance especially with flash and heavier lens.

Lens cap is almost too small. It'll be lost in a week I bet. Would be cool if this was built into the lens so when it collapses it closes.

If anyone has any suggestions for any of the above mentioned items please feel free...
I just got a 'Z Cap' made by JJC in China. Ordered it from Amazon and got it in ten days. It does exactly what you mentioned: When you turn off the camera (with the 16-50pz) the lens retracts and the lens cap has shutters that close.

It eliminates the possible loss of the original lens cap.

You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TFAHYS2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My lenses came with the caps, don't know when that was discontinued....

Jeff, I'm not unhappy with the kit lenses, but when I got the 35/1.8 I learned what this camera really could do, just amazing.

The lenses do, when purchased individually. But, the pre-packed official camera/pz lens bundle from Sony does not contain a body cap or rear lens cap.

I completely agree but with the 24mm f1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 10-18mm.

The A6000 shines with good glass. I sold the kit lens soon after I bought a couple of primes.

The good version of the kit lens is really not that bad if you use f5.6 and above f-stop. What happen below f5.6, well they are barely acceptable outside the centre and sometimes blurry outside the centre esp for a poorer version.

Thanks, always good to get a fresh perspective after either loads of "It's the best camera in the world" and "It's worse than my 1" sensor camera! type posts.

Maybe a myth about Alpha menus, but the Nex ones were quite horribly arranged.
