Ohhh the irony! I tried and failed with Alpha4 last week. My camera is one of the ones that has a different firmware then nikfreak's version. If it had worked I would have waited a little longer on buying the 7d ii, which arrived today. I'm tempted to give Alpha5 a shot but think I'll be a little busy with the 7d. ;)

Mine too. However, I was able to remain patient because I always viewed ML as a bonus "nice-to-have" feature rather than something that could sway my gear choice.

Good news! I usually wait for beta, but may not be able to resist!
I'm considering breaking my "I am not a guinea pig" rule too. Focus peaking and automatic DotTune alone sound absolutely lovely.

Agreed. It's a nice to have but it wouldn't have stopped me from getting the 7D Mark ii. Maybe delayed me a little longer while I toyed with it. The mark ii is the camera I've wanted ever since I gave up my original 7D to get the 70d over a year ago.

I'll be patiently waiting for ML on the mark ii. Even if it does take a few years! Hopefully not as long as it took for the original 7D, though. heh

Yes ML on the 70D sounds like a dream - most advanced crop camera in the universe.

Never used ML before, but just installed it with no problem on my 70D. One of the main reasons I wanted it was to try the automated Dot Tume. Any suggestions for especially useful features? I take mostly stills.

Thanks but I have been to the web site, seen the list of features and taken a look at the manual. The list is long and some aspects are not very clear. Was just looking to get some idea of what others find to be the most valuable features.

Thanks,

There are countless features for video, audio, stills - i've used a plethora of them at different times through the years, and cannot list them all. Short list - headphone capability, focus peaking, intervalometer, light and sound actuation (like for lightening shots). But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Take the time and effort to look at the features and manual, see which might be useful to YOU. It's like you have a new camera, so, learn about its capabilites. If you have questions, ask. BTW, each feature has a help menu -right on the screen of your camera- (at least 60D version did) making ML very easy to use.

Question for anybody familiar with ML. Can focus ramping (the timelapse feature) be used for short bursts for focus stacking in macro?

Yea, im trying to look up the actual meaning of some of the listed features, kinda hard to find a good definition. For example:
  • Silent pictures
  • Motion detection
  • False color for precise exposure control
  • Magic zoom window to fine-tune focus
These things sound like they could be interesting but I have no real idea what exactly they do. And im also interested in the video features like bitrate control and framrate control, but I also wonder will the 70D be able to go beyond 1080p? Even a 2600 x 1400 would be pretty cool.
Come on, please! - these are all explained in the user guide. Look at the table of contents on the right and click on the subject you want to learn about. There are even video demonstrations of many features in the guide:
