Just got it in a few hours ago.

Using the kit lens, samyang 24mm f1.4 and Samsung 45mm f1.8

Using a pny 64gb uhs1 card,
With raw lossless I get 5 shots in burst and the buffer clears after about 1 second and you can take another 5.

With raw lossy I get 8-9 shots before the buffer fills up. Again about 1 second and it can go again.

In JPEG superfine the buffer doesn't fill up! I can shoot and shoot and shoot. Hearing the click like a machine gun is a beautiful thing!

More in depth review to come.

Feel free to ask any specific questions.

Thx! But the thing about jpg is odd, considering that the nx1 fills the buffer in that mode even at 8fps...

Perhaps they improved the way in which the buffer is handled?

P.s. samsung, please hurry up and release the rumored fw for nx1 with lossy alternative and improved performance!

P.p.s. does nx500 shoot at 14bit in single shooting mode?

What are the slow motion video specs? Resolution and frame rates. I'm hearing 720 at 120fps, but can't confirm it. Was hoping it did 1080p 120fps like the NX1 ;) Would love to see some samples of it if you have time.

720p can do 120fps.

1080p maxes out at 60fps

One thing that is weird is there is an option for 240fps but it is greyed out in every mode I tried (I tried every combination of video size and quality)

The lossy raw file is 21mb

The lossless raw file is 35mb

I do have other memory cards that I will be trying shortly.

One thing about the buffer I noticed is I was in M mode when I got those great results. When in anything but M (even S or P) the buffer does indeed fill up with the .jpg files.

Do you have any comments on the most important things: Image quality, focus speed and accuracy, battery life?

For that 240fps mode, did you try putting the camera in manual mode then checking the menu?

Thanks for the posting info!

I did. I think it may be a firmware boo-boo?

Image quality, too soon to say for sure but initially I love what I see.

Battery life, I didn't charge the battery when I first got it and it just died about 3 1/2 hours later.

Focus accuracy, I have used the Canon sl1 and lumix gh4 and the nx500 absolutely blows both of those out of the water!
Using the Samsung 45mm f1.8 it was focusing on my 3 yr old almost instantly.
From a very non scientific seat of the pants test the focus seems to work very, very good.
As soon as I half pressed I got a focus confirmation. Absolutely no hunting even in video. The focus pulls looked natural and there was more hunting in moderate light.

*no hunting in moderate light.

(is there a way to edit your posts on here?)

In desktop mode, click on +more options and then edit, but it only works for a short period (like 5 minutes).

Any luck with CAF?

Nice. Please show us some pic with the Samyang and Samsung 45 later. I got a feeling you'll do better than those from the DPR samples.

Maybe they can add a Mic Input to the camera, with a firmware update :) In these days you never know. lol

I'm uploading some sample low light videos now. They show the different crop factors of 4k vs 1080 and show off the samyang/rokinon 24mm at f1.4 and iso 1600 in a large room lit with only one small lamp.

Using the bundled samsung movie converter the file size almost exactly triples going from h.265 to h.264 using the softwares "pro" quality setting. (There are no details as to what bitrate that actually is.)

One thing I'm noticing is the camera's white balance seems quite a bit off when using the samyang/rokinon fully manual lens. If I use the custom white balance it works much better. It doesn't seem to have the problem with the samsung lenses.

Nice to hear that there is a 240fps coming soon, kinda neat to think it may come at 1080 for NX1 users as well since 1080 is 60p only on the NX500 and NX1 can do twice that... Any word on how the Rolling Shutter is?? Has the crop helped at all with that or not really? Hard to base how it will work on the NX1 though since a better image processer

.

This is really good news on the effective buffer size with lossy raw. I thought about cancelling my pre-order but kept it in case the actual buffer performance was't too bad. How does it perform when set to continuous low and lossy raw (I believe that's 4fps)? It may have time to write a couple more frames before slowing down.

thx

Clive

It's a Linux with usb port, it's entirely doable from that viewpoint, but I doubt they want to do it.

The following clips have no editing and are converted to h.264 using samsungs bundled converter utility using the "pro" quality setting. Each file size was a 3rd the size before conversion.

All clips use the samyang 24mm f1.4 lens @f1.4 iso1600 in a dimly lit room (1 lamp on the far side of the room)

The links are dropbox downloads so you can see the original non youtube compressed versions. (you should download it and not judge by the dropbox preview)

Link 4k 1600iso approx 3 feet away from subject.

Link 1080p 30fps without moving the camera

Link 1080p 30fps moving the camera closer to the subject to get the same framing as 4k.

(Note at f1.4 the only thing in focus is her nose, I think I missed the focus in the second one completely as it's fairly soft, still getting used to the setup!)

Oldest trick in the book: using a cute model ;)

Looks great to me, sure there is cropping for 4k, but think of the extra reach you get :)
