All of these pics are from last week's U.S. Synchronized Skating Championship. Don't think the use of the term synchronized means that the skaters all perform identical moves at the exact moment throughout the routine. In fact, there are very few moments where that occurs. It is a precisely choreographed routine set to music that, with makeup, hair, and dress, is meant to evoke a theme. One required element, the intersection, shows the seeming chaos that occurs. Often one line of skaters break off from the other line. They go to opposite ends of the rink and return at speed to form two, close parallel units. Then, they quickly cross each other. Parents sigh in relief when no one falls.

At one or two points in a program, the skaters will do a break out move. A few skaters might do a spin, leap, or some other individual move while the rest of the team form groups and do other moves.

Over the course of years that my daughter has been competing and I have been shooting, I have found that I prefer to focus on small groups or individual/paired skaters doing some challenging maneuver.

Spin:

Sit spin (part of a complicated multiple spin):

There are guys that do synchro but they are far and few between and I missed the Senior competition in which one that I know skates. I did catch one while using my D90. I brought my oder camera to use a lens that would allow me to get some wider shots without changing lenses. I soon put it away as the D7100 was just more effective and pleasant to use. Most notably, the af of the D7100 is palpably more precise. Reviewing the images on my lcd, there was only one pic where the focus box hit ice. Plus, the darker viewfinder showing less than 100% of the scene was obvious when switching back and forth. Here is the D90 shot:

I also like to sometimes shoot before the action starts. This is a University of Delaware duo forming the letter D (others were making the U):

And, the final group pose can be interesting--one last chance to sell their routine. These skaters must have done a good job since they (Miami of Ohio) won:

I hope you enjoyed the set. Bringing both cameras really helped to reinforce my decision to get the D7100. The brighter light of this rink at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island also helped. Also, while the camera was set for continuous shooting, my finger is well trained for single shot that I never got a blast away. The D90 may be more sensitive since I usually got a blast or two away in the past.

If you would like to see a shot of my daughter, I shared one in the weekly contest thread:

Good stuff, and yes, impressive AF. Enjoyed your narrative.

Thanks for sharing.

Mako, maybe tis time for a "probationary period" for Iain? Of course this isn't the first time as I recall, but it's your call. This was a huge step over the line.

Hardly...all he did was try to make some subtle improvements and made a mistake along the way....Now I could show a huge step over the line, but Brev would probably hunt me down :)

Subtle? I know subtle and that ain't it. Look, if I wanted white boards I would have done it myself. I find that to be a significant alteration.

I've made the same goof with the patch/clone tool many times so don't think it intentional. That said, it really is an example of why altering the work of others is often simply a breach of good forum etiquette (unless the thread or member calls for it).

lol, don't do that!!!! My point was not "just" the p*** poor editing, but the mere thought to do it when one: it wasn't necessary and two "c and c" was NOT asked for,but it was forced upon Brev.

I just think the courteous thing to do were to ASK if he could make some changes first. But that's me.

Hello Brev

Totally enjoying the unique subject manner of your 7100 pics, I don't think I have seen this before.

Well done.

And then, as I scrolled down, my heart gave a huge miss.

A post from you-know-who. He is talking nonsense of course, if you used a wide angle lens as per his suggestion, absolutely everything would be in perfect focus.

There's always someone.

Absolutely correct. You do no isolate subjects with a wide angle lens unless you are close enough that nothing else is in the picture.

True. Really is an example of something really uncalled for. But I do agree with herbymel that it wasn't likely intentional (the pollution of the skater's face) and should have asked before cloning our the backstops before posting.

you just don't get it I guess

... Thanks Herb. Sheesh.

... Poor cloning aside, hands up anyone who wouldn't mind going to a ballet, and having big advertising billboards on stage. No problem I guess.
Not sure that's relevant...no more than asking folks to hold up there hands if they prefer going to a ballet were the lead has two noses and an eye hanging out. The distraction might make it hard to enjoy the performance for many.

... Mako: As you observed, it was simply a cloning mistake. And, not really the cause of the hysterical outcry.
You posted an unsolicited re-do of a man's image that he took great pride in...and made a mistake that deformed the subject crossly...and never once said you were sorry for the unintentional offense it caused. That reflects poorly on you personally but does serve as an example others may learn from.
... My point was clearly and respectfully about the context of the photographs.
Your intent may have been...but your execution was anything but respectful. When you accidentally pee on someones leg...does only pointing it out as a mistake make it all better...or is it an indication that the one doing the peeing doesn't really care that he peed on someones leg. It's OK to pee on your leg as it was just a mistake?

To try to get this thread back on track, I will post a few more pics from the event. I found my initial ratings of my pics were not accurate as the Elements Organizer shows the images with the default Adobe settings. In this case, the indoor lighting gave all the pics a strong yellow cast and made it difficult to really evaluate them. Anyway, when I loaded some of the pics in my Adobe Camera Raw plug-in using the rink specific settings, I found a few more I liked. Plus, I could play with the pp and framing a bit with similar images as here:

The Lexettes, a Hayden Junior team, have long been one of my favorites as they usually emphasize speed and risk-taking over beauty. They might have gone too far the other way with these very pink outfits:

a1361f646c5e4b24a9f3cd6188a09080.jpg

Maybe it was their unsynchronized expressions that doomed them to silver this year.

The beginning of a routine can be a good opportunity to catch a skater in a pose:

Here is a wider view of the rink and an entire team in an initial pose using my D90 and 28-300:

The two skaters in the pic below are now in Zagreb, Croatia, competing in the World Junior Synchronized Skating Championship having won gold at this event:

Thanks for sharing your beautiful photographs of a class of subjects which I have no experience in and much admiration for.

Your detailed commentaries are appreciated.

(Unfortunately, the otherwise civil thread was temporarily tainted by someone with a despisable sense of superiority and entitlement.)

The pictures below should show my basic attitude toward cloning with these sports images, when I would and when I wouldn't.

This is a before and after I did well before I started this thread:

069da3d18bc74206983dfda5ea5391f1.jpg

But, the skater pictured above is a family friend. She is facing forward (pretty much) and the picture turned out well. The cloning was simple to do and I knew her parents' Facebook friends would enjoy seeing the image as they have done in the past. So, a lot of results for little effort.

Here is one I will not clone:

887a1af877404a3f9f86d601708c17c3.jpg

She is facing away plus I do not know her or her family. The effort to clone the other skater would not be matched by the enjoyment of any particular audience. Plus, her having four legs is amusing to me. If someone wanted to pay me to clone any background in any image posted here, I would accept the offer. I am not religiously opposed to it, but I tend toward realism. After all, the skaters, the choreographers, and the dress designers are the artists here. I feel good if I can reproduce the actual colors and scene faithfully, share some with family and friends, and convey the reality of the event to the members here. The skaters and the colors were exceptional in person. I hope everyone enjoyed the images.

And, thanks to Kaso for your support.

Brev

A BIG thank you, they were all superb, and a great testimony to your skills as well as showing how to drive the D7100(or any)to it's full potential. Sorry you had to deal with some BS along the way, however I will call someone out when the behavior warrants it. Kaso said it with elegance :-). What a nice gesture Jim Moyer made to you also, great to know there are unselfish people left in this world! I will extend that so if your ever in MD let me know if you could use anything, just know tis not as good as Jim has, lol. Take care,Robert

Thanks but no thanks. I do not find what you find objectionable objectionable. Plus, you ruined her face. If you do not appreciate the pics as they are, any explanation on my part would be a futile defense. So, no 'corrected' images please.

Unfortunately there is little respect for anything ..... other than what YOU consider a quality composition. One of the main reasons I don't spend much time here.

"Self appointed" master composition critics, just don't sit well with most folks. I haven't been on here in a couple of weeks. 3-4 posts into what WAS my favorite site to visit and a "IGF" edification is all I needed to remind me why I left.

There has been a number of requests for the removal of certain individuals on this forum. I would suppose again they fall on deaf ears........sigh...........
