Don't despair! Canon still takes excellent landscapes, especially at night. :)

Even the 16-35L II lens which is considered trash for shooting the stars, was plenty capable for some reason... ;)

These were taken in a week-long stay at Crater Lake, Oregon.

I read your tutorial on lee filter system, it was very helpful. You probably saved me a nice chunk of cash, I am grateful. John.

I wanted to contact Lee about doing a more fancy filter guide for them, but I realized they probably hate me for teaching people how to purchase the fewest number of filters for maximum versatility. haha :)

I bet the sales of Megenta grads have gone up a bit. Most of the traffic to my site is for the Lee Filter guide. :)

I really wish the 6D could handle noise better in higher temperatures though. This high ISO shot was done in really hot weather, and the noise was brutal. Never going to print very big, if at all. Which is a shame, because it took me years to finally get a shot of wildflowers with a lenticular cloud over Mount Rainier. :(

I have thought about using an ice pack to cool down the camera for such shots, though. Anyone ever try that before? I can see why astro shooters use specialized liquid cooled sensors, as noise can get crazy with temps. While the 6D may suffer from this, I don't think any DSLR can do much better with high ISO and high temps.

Hi Johan,

first of all congrats for your images and blog. Beautiful and interesting.

I just hit some of your shot on 500px as also follow you ;)

I love my 6D also and try to learn how to make better photography with it as also with the lee filters.

A specific question that I did not find the answer on your blog. What about 50iso? I personally use it and do not find any issue with it. I'm interested to learn more about it from you.

Sure would be nice to know what the exposure data was on the (beautiful) pics since no Exif info shows up on the images. Can you please divulge?

Thanks,

Mike
Night images are always the same. 20-30 seconds. f2.8. ISO 6400-12800

I have a very limited experience with the 6D , so maybe please excuse my question : why iso 6400-12800 for these shots ? Obviously using a tripod allows for low iso's ?

Wow, all these pictures are just knock out shots! Makes me want to try harder!!

It requires a higher ISO to stop the motion of the stars with a shutter speed of less than 30 seconds.

First off beautiful images. I mean incredible. Orion sells a cooler than you can use on a DSLR to keep it below ambient. But you are correct for DSO (Deep Sky Objects) you really need a cooled CCD. I used an SBIG 8300C and cooled the below to 0 to -10C.
