I got EOS-M 22mm + adapter kit July 2013 when they were blowing them out for £350 in the UK and loved the image qualty in RAW, build, lenses, compatibility with my work rig etc but the lack of ability to turn the touch screen off and the massive non-resizable AF point drove me away from using it as anything but a light backup to the work rig - I kept the 90EX to use as a wireless remote / light fill for the 1DS3 and I sold it when the prices started dropping and lost nothing (as I kept the 90EX) as like most here, I didn`t see any future in the M series at the time or a fix for the two firmware "issues" .

anyway with the M3 launched and looking good, I`ve been looking around for blowouts / used again on the original M 22 adapter kit as it`ll give me the two essential items and a "free" Mk1 body and found a nearly new one (M + 22mm + adapter) for £190 to the door mint and boxed from a dealer - add an M3 when the price levels (which provides the 18-55) and sorted .. I can use the original M now as a 35mm FOV compact and a tiny backup to the main rig ..

What is the latest firmware and did they ever address the lack of ability to switch off the touchscreen (as in focus point movement) or make the AF point smaller ?

No they didn't, and - digressing a bit - Photokhan's report (nearby to this thread) indicates that though it fixes most other things, the M3 still has this massive, unresizeable AF point too, which is really annoying (for me, anyway). Don't know why they won't implement a smaller option, since even Canon compacts can do it (not to mention most other mirrorless cameras except Nikons).

Regarding blow-out prices on the original M, earlier this week, Argos were selling the white 18-55 M kit for a shockingly low £135. That seemed to clear their stock in record time! They also had silver and red, but still at their long-standing prices of £199.

Yes, I managed to snag one with a further £10 off voucher too. Absolute bargain.

In regard to the lack of ability to turn the touch screen off. I never quite understood why so many people have had issues with it. Perhaps it is the way of handling the camera. I have mine attached to a wrist strap only and have it in a quick draw lowepro or kata bag depending on which lens is attached. I can imagine that if you have the conventional strap attached and permanently have it round your neck and switched on it will be a PITA.

Best regards

Wow - it really was! Congratulations.

It can be, when used like that (though I always switch a camera off when it's not in use, so less of an issue for me generally).

they`ve got to fix that - the only Mirrorless cams with the large only options were the original NEX5 and EP1 - even the 1st gen G1 had a small square -- it causes front focus because the big clumsy thing touches foreground stuff :( .

Sadly it looks like the DSLR division is still designing the M series and the M3 is merely a 750D without the DSLR bits instead of an interchangeable lens G1X

I checked the minute the price landed at 7AM - there weren`t any left anywhere to be had even by then so maybe only a couple .. the £199 price is still there, even locally to me 5 miles down the road but that kit misses the two important ingredients for any EOS DSLR owner thinking of the M3 - the 22mm and the EOS-Adapter

Harrison cams have a mint boxed 18-55 kit kit for £150 .. again, for me it will duplicate the 18-55 and I`ll not get the juicy bits ..

I had it on a wrist strap to with the 22mm on and you have to switch the damn camera off when pocketing it otherwise the AF point gets moved -- that`s the pain of it . to be honest, I`d rather have no touchscreen at all than that palaver, the M handles as well as an S90 or S100 without it ..

Absolutely - my feelings exactly. It's one of the reasons my M doesn't get all that much use, but I'm such a camera nut I still keep it anyway.

I suspect they do it on purpose - but presumably it would be equally straightforward to design the option of a smaller AF spot into live view mode on the EOS DSLRs too.

One poster actually did get one (see nearby message). Luckily I didn't want another, but was amazed at the price - that's what my 22mm cost me, though come to think of it, that was only because a gift voucher offset some of the cash price!

Yes, I have the EF adapter, which came free with my white EOS M + 18-55 at Christmas 2013, at the time when you got a bonus cashback for buying a Canon printer as well. So I did. Of course with today's prices, it seems a bit daft that I thought back then "prices will NEVER get any lower than this!"....

I bought my 22mm f2 STM in April last year on ebay, for $96 including shipping, from Asia. New perfect condition, no box.

A few weeks ago I bought a new 18-55mm IS STM for $76.99, including shipping costs, from Japan.

I wanted the two cameras for my motorcycle trips. I can make beautiful 16X24 and larger wall prints. this camera works better than my Nikon D800's and fast lenses. I do take a carbon fiber tripod for low light situations.

Few would doubt the image quality in RAW - OK it`s noisier than the G1X or DSLRs with the same sensor, probably because they stuffed it all in a body little bigger than an S90 (heat etc) but it`s still razor sharp with the excellent M glass .. also the thing is beautifully made and with the 22mm on feels like it was honed from a block of alloy , shames all other Mirrorless for build near its size, EG:- the GM1 feels like a cheap toy in comparison let alone the Fuji XM1 and Sony 5000 series

The issue with the M is that they got the DSLR team to make it and not the Compact P&S team -

Hence why the G1X (both versions in their own different ways) have superb ergonomics, resizable focus square (despite a sensor based on the same design, it`s basically a 14Mp chunk from the middle of the 550D chip), no Touchscreen issues and are actually faster to AF in low light (even the Mk1) ..... whereas the M is ,, errrm the M .

London camera exchange, £120

i'd like to pick up a m2 body but i don't see any for a price i am willing to pay...

I can`t see an advantage of the M2 - still got the massive AF point, slow AF and non-disablable touch screen, may as well snag an M for next to nothing

I really hope they fix both these issues in the M3

The M Kit landed .. mint condition, lens tack sharp edge to edge at F2 like the new one I got over 18 months ago , glad (I kept my spare battery , have two 90EXs now :D also ) ..

Wanted to try Magic lantern (to see the shutter count more than anything) but the Download link on the nightly builds page gives an Error404 - tried selecting another cam and the same so I guess there`s an issue with ML's website

Apparently the ML download link is not correct. The domain name is repeated. Try deleting one of them. It worked for me.

Thanks , Will do

Just to let you know that the latest ML installed on a properly formatted card seems to have eliminated the infamous 'shutter bug' where with M lenses the camera would not fire until you removed and reattached the lens with the power on (that's what worked for me).

I got ML installed on a card and the shutter count is under 700 shots !! . the weird "live view actuations" count is still there even though its not a DSLR and is higher as the cam's been switched on without taking any shots ..

Just got to work out what ML offers the M now - as the cam has a Mic socket (unlike the pesky GX7) I bet it`ll be superb for Video . I suppose it won`t disable the touchscreen or make the AF point smaller ?
