This might be a stupid post, and I am sorry if it's the case. It's the first time I try the manual mode (Manual Exposure - M) on the 10D, and I just followed the 10D user guide.

I can change the shutter speed, but when I try to change the aperture, it remains locked (on my 10D) on 5.6. I cannot change it, by using the dial (yes it's turned on "on", yes it works on the menus). I am missing something?

Is my 10D malfunctioning ? (Otherwise it works fine, just upgraded to 1.0.1 but it didn't change anything)

Are you trying to make it larger or smaller?

If you're trying to make it larger (ie. smaller f number), what lens are you using, and at what focal length? Depending on the lens, f/5.6 might be as big an aperture as you can have. For example, my 28-200mm lens cannot have an aperture larger than f/5.6 at it's most telephoto setting.

I tried both with the 50mm 1.8 and the 28-135 IS USM. Same story. I don't think it's normal (is it?)

Hmm. No, that isn't normal. The 50mm f/1.8 should be able to go down to 1.8, obviously ;) Although the 28-135, like my 28-200, is limited to f/5.6 and smaller at 135mm.

I wish I knew what to tell you :( Can you get the camera to choose larger apertures than f/5.6 in Tv mode? Or, can you set larger than f/5.6 in Av mode?

Try clearing all custom functions and all camera settings.....take the battery out....take the lens off...put it all back then try again. I checked my manual...to see if any custom function would cause the condition that you described....but did not find anything.

By the way, which lens are you using? And do you have another one to try it with?

Best of luck and let us know what happens.

Turning off the quick control dial means I can't change the aperture in the manual mode but still can navigate the menu. Check the switch again...

Could be a defective switch. :(

FWIW, on my D60, if that little switch is turned off, the control
dial still works in the menus, it just doesn't work for exposure
control.

I did, it's dead on "on". Should I take a picture of it to prove it ?

Hi Wismie,

I had the same problem with my 10D, though mine was frozen at f6.7.

Anywayz, I realized that it froze after I had fiddled with the CN functions. Make sure all your CN functions are set back to its default value (should be 0 for all CN functions) then try again. You should be able to set your aperture value. After that, you can try setting your CN functions back to what you want.

It worked for me...so far.

If your CN functions are already set to default, and you still experience the same problem...sorry to say its time to send the camera back for some serious professional help...

Hope that helps.

Does it mean you need to reset your custom functions each time you want to use manual mode? Or is is just a one-time setting ? (BTW, I did set some custom functions before using Manual mode).

Anyway, I'll try this tonight at home (don't have the camera with me here) and let you know if it works (I hope so, I would hate sending my camera to repair!)

Nope. It should be a one off thing. I suspect it is one particular function that causes the malfunction, but I never really had the time to test my theory out.

Since that little malfunction on my 10D, I have set back some of the CN and it seems to be working fine. I suspect its the function that allows you to set 1/3 incremental steps for over/underexposure (sorry, can't remember the CN number) that is the cause, but again I must qualify this is as yet unsubstantiated...:->

I'm sure you'll find your 10D working fine again once you reset the default settings. Your experience sure sounds a lot like mine...

Good luck with the tinkering tonight! Maybe you can try out the 1/3 thing and lemme know if it is indeed the cause!:->

maye u should try to turn it OFF and then ON again ... sometimes I realise the switch is stucked in between ...

If still cannot , I guess u got to send it to back to Canon Centre...
I've already said here many times that the dial is ON. I did this
with the user guide open and that's the first thing it says.
