Hey folks,

I'm about to purchase the Nikon D750, and one of the main reasons I want to go full frame is to get some spectacular photos of the milk way, stars and hopefully the aurora. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the D750 in this respect, and would be able to share their work. I've had a quick look around for images on the web but I thought I'd get some solid advice from those on the forum.

I'll leave a link below giving an example of the kind of image I'd love to capture (note: the example is taken with the Canon 6D).

Many thanks for your help,

Jaime

That's a great pic and I'm sure the D750 is at least as capable, if not more, from what I've heard. Certainly the dynamic range of the Nikon bodies trumps the Canons, so if you want to pull up your shadows you'll have more scope.

I can only show what my D800E is capable of, but with the D750 having a larger pixel size I'd expect it to perform a little better.

Here are a couple of recent examples

Thanks for your reply Steve. Speaking of photographs, the two you linked are fantastic! If the D750 took a photo half as good as that I'd be pretty pleased ;)

Hi Jaime

The Nikon D750 is probably the best Starscape camera out there right now,

I tested it recently in New Zealand for Astro timelapsing as well.

Great colors, even used at iso 10.000, not only RAW but even direct jpeg's were suberb.

BTW it's lightweight and great AF-capabilities BIF-pictures.

I'll post a short timelapse of aurora in a few days. It performs better than a Canon 6D.

D800 was already very good.

Kind Regards,
Bjorn

Have fun with your future D750 but don`t forget to buy fast glass for starscapes :)

I've heard the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 is great for photographing the stars. Was thinking about picking getting one for my D750

It's a good one like the 14mm f2,8. ... another nice one that I tested was the new 20mm f1,8 Nikor! (BTW the 24mm Sigma Art 849 USD , it will be more likely 750 USD) will be a better lens.

Samyang has some quality control issues, you really need to test 3 or 4 samples to pick out the best.

It does have speed on its side, but I'd choose the 14mm f2.8 instead. Unless you can afford both!

Yeah I saw the Sigma announcement today. Now I don't know which to choose! Nikon, Rokinon / Samyang or Sigma? Too many choices

Rokinon 14mm f2.8 (Samyang as you wish) is the best out there. No coma at all, which gives you Sharp starts even in the corners.

A photon only stops "existing" when it is captured by your sensor.

I also have the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. It's a great lens! I was a little surprised to see that the price of the lens is now $399. I bought it last October and it was only $298.

I also tried the 24mm f/1.4 but ended up returning it because the copy I got had horrible CA. From what I've read it can be real hit and miss for that lens.

I own the Samyang 14mm. Incredible astro lens and it's a bargain. I also use the Samyang 12mm on my GX7 and it is a fantastic little lens. On another note, Nikon is set to release the D810A which is specifically designed for astrophotograp
hy, so you may want to hold off a little while longer. Probably won't be cheap, though.
