OT: Laptops - What Are YOU Using?...

All I have to say is that if you are looking for reliable it doesn't get much better than a ThinkPad. I've never had a problem with one and am on my 3rd right now (Over the last 5+ years...not because I've broken them) :). I would really steer clear of the Toshibas. We've had nothing but trouble with them at work. Especially the screens.

As for Sony? I've got a dead one sitting here in my closet but it is a problem particular to that model so it's not really representative of all of them. Basically, the motherboard had a short and it will no longer charge a batter. I don't prefer Sony's but they're not bad laptops.

Basically, I just love the Titanium cover on my TP A31. No worries of something coming down on the screen when it's closed and breaking it from the outside. The keyboard is rock solid. The A series has the extra UltraBay that can take another battery instead of a floppy or something like that. They aren't the cheapest but quality never is. One thing, it doesn't have Firewire or USB2 but I have a PCMCIA card for that...downside is that CardBus doesn't shuttle data as fast as those two standards provide so that is a downer. Newer models might have that standard however.

One question...have you looked at a UXGA screen in person? 1600x1200 is a LOT of pixels on a screen that size. I went with a SXGA+ (1400x1050) and really liked it when compared to the 1600x1200 UXGA screen but that is very much personal preference. Before you spend that kind of cash I strongly recommend you find one and play with it for a bit because I think it's a love/hate thing if you like that kind of resolution or not. Plus, screens don't resize as well on a laptop like the do regular screens so it doesn't look very good if you feel like running it in a lower mode later. Just my two cents on that one.

Good luck! You know you'll need a new bag now for all that camera and computer gear! May I recommend a LowePro Stealth AW? That's another $200. :-)

GOD, this is getting to be an EXPEN$IVE HOBBY!!!

Shopping a laptop now, for my photography/video/audio (and to use
in the field for my computer business too)...

Looked at that (should say, been OBSESSING on ) one from Toshiba,
5205 S705, with the cool anti-glare home theater cover on the
screen, but hell, $500 extra for a TV Tuner that I'm never going to
use? More into performance, screen size/resolution, storage,
network connectivity, and having firewire/usb2 for the cam, reader,
hard disk recorder, etc.

Looks like I'm going to end up with a Sony GRT (custom config).
16.1" UXGA screen, P4 2.8Ghz, 256MB RAM (I can get RAM alot cheeper
than Sony wants to sell it for later), 60GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD, 2 yr.
extended warranty - $ 2,219.

THANK GOD for TOLERANT WIVES (promised her a new G5 Mac for X-Mas).

What are you's'all guyz (that's how we say it in the south) using
in the field?

Happy 4th all!

.............. a slow 600Mhz P3 with max Ram of 196MB and a 5GB HD. and a 15" screen.

It once was a very, very essential item but now only travels on special assignment, I think I’ll have to drop it (and break it) before I’ll replace it, I’ve updated the firmware and added Windows XP.

I’m running PS4 on the laptop (it’s all I need) and this just flies in the smaller processor and ram space available.

If I ever stop buying cameras I’ll get something like you described, their prices are a steal now, and no longer carry a “business premium” but I was disappointed with the performance and screen for digital work on all the laptops, their desktop counterparts are simply so much better fro the same specs.

I have a similarly specked Compaq which was so disappointing it is merely a systems backup and never gets used regularly.

17" Apple PowerBook :-)

Old Compaq 1750 , well it IS a PII (350 ;-) has USB, Cardbus and a MASSIVE TFT screen (14") , shame the IBM Deathstar HDD has just packed up (second one now doing the famous IBM Death rattle) I wish Maxtor or WD would release 2.5" HDDs, these IBMs Suck big time ..

Good laptop though, excellent with Irfan view for testing lenses in-store and who the hell would STEAL it ;-)

I bought a Dell Latitude (C840) - a) because I was familiar with the Latitude range from my old IT job and they are extremely well built and robust, and b) because accessories and add-ons are plentiful and cheap on ebay since these machine are virtually a global corporate standard. I think the latter point is a major consideration if you want to get the most from the machine. The C6xx series are also very good and a fair bit slimmer and lighter than the C8xx. My wife has a C610.

For example, I got a C/Dock II docking station for just £50. This lets me quickly grab the laptop to take on-site, and just as quickly plug back into my network without messing with cables.

Even better, the dock has two PCI slots, so I run an Nvidia PCI graphics card in it (same chipset family as the laptop graphics) and have a seamless two monitor setup which is far better for photo editing than a laptop LCD. I added a firewire card in the second slot as the single laptop F/W port is only four pin and can't power peripherals - something to watch out for.

I also added the internal wireless card, again for only about £50, so if I really want I can get out of my home office and work elsewhere in the house or even out in the garden, and for about £100 added a second hard disk in the media bay to complement the internal CD writer for storing and backing up photos on field trips.

So - I would advise consider price and availability of spares and add-ons, and think seriously about availability of a full docking station for your chosen model - many only offer port replicators which are are better than nothing, but not so convenient or flexible. With a full docking station you can truly replace your desktop - which may help justify the cost ;-)

Camera? That's a handheld computer with a lens on the front - right?

Enough speed (but not as fast as the fastest Intel laptos),
enough memory and a very good screen for handling the pictures on the go.

Too big to be put in the photo bag. But great when you return to your hotel room to do some picture processing or want to judge the quality of the photographs.

Recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 8500:
  • Pentium 4-M 2.4Ghz
  • 15.4" wide-aspect WUXGA screen (the best laptop screen I have ever seen or used).
  • 1 Gb RAM (512Mb I got for free as part of a special promotion!)
  • 64 Mb GeForce4 4200 Go
  • DVD+RW burner
  • 60 Gb 5400rpm hard disk
  • 802.11g wi-fi, Bluetooth, Firewire etc...
I highly recommend this notebook for power users. I find it a joy to edit and tweak my photos on this machine...now where's my Unreal Tournament 2003 CD... :)

Cheers.

SickRick,

My experiences dictate that I would only consider buying three types of laptops: High-end IBM, Toshiba, and/or Mac. All the other laptops out there stink.

I just had my hands on the Mac G4 Powerbook with the 17" Studio Screen, but returned it because the sound was out. Then I signed up for ADC. Now I haven't decided to go back for the laptop, wait a month for the G5, or wait a few months for a G5 laptop.

Anyway good luck with your shopping.

This is a great machine which I have had for about 1 1/2 years, but I am of course longing for more, escpecially with processing more and more RAW files.

900Mhz pentium 3, 512 MB RAM, 15" monitor, CDRW 40 GIG hard drive. I upgraded to get more RAM, larger monitor and the CDRW. I have been very happy with the machine, but like I said, with more and more RAW files, I find I need faster processor, more RAM and a bigger monitor.

I try to live up to these words. Do you?
Film? What do you mean, film?

Most Laptops are Made by one of the major Taiwanese/Malasian laptop makers and badged in the USA. There are many, Clevo, Compal, Avanta (Dell) etc.

http://www.pro-star.com is the US importer for Clevo. The same company that makes the Alienware Area 51.

I have a 4074 3.06 With HT, 1gb RAM 60gb 5400rpm drive ATI Radion 9000 with 64mb, Wifi, Bluetooth, DVD, CDRW, FD, 1400x1050 screen. Runs like a wildcat and weighs about 7.5 pounds with battery. My only complaint is the case is Blue and Silver as opposed to a nice black.

You can even get it tax free from Xtereme Computers in Nevada if you live in California.
