hey guys need your help on this matter:

i own a canon t4i but i'm in love with my new NEX-6 and its lightweight and its photo quality. I'm planing for a trip to Europe and would love to travel light enough to enjoy my trip so i'll go this time with my new toy :)

now i've the kit lens Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT & a Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN.

so for a casual photographer who want to get some nice shots from his trip and want to cover everything from portraits to landscapes. and who's in love with street photography and wanna give it a nice try. which lens i should get?

10-18 lens is amazing.. I would do the 10-18, kit lens 16-50 and 55-210. That will cover all the rang.

I use the 18-105 exclusively as my walk-around travel camera, with great results. I found the 10-18 too wide for many travel pics I wanted to shoot.

Here is a photoset I took recently in Spain and Portugal with NEX-6 and 18-105:

Some people say the 18-105 is too heavy to carry around all day. Not true, just get a sling strap for the NEX so the weight isn't on the back of your neck.

My travel weapons of choice were the zeiss 24/1.8 and the 50/1.8 OSS when I had my NEX-6. Borh lenses are superb- the 24mm is one of my all time favourite lenses. Of course this a more expensive route to take.

This was largely my combo for trips to South Africa and British Columbia in 2012. I never felt lacking (though, I had a 55-210 that I used on a whale watching tour 1 afternoon off of the coast of Vancouver Island and I wish I had just enjoyed the experience instead since there are 20 bazillion better whale shots than I got).

Check out Adumas post below about the Zeiss Varo f/4 16-70 mm. zoom. I read the reviews of this lens, some were bad and some were good but they all say it's considerably better then Sony's kit lens. I tried one out at our local camera store, size and weight is about the same as the kit 18-55mm. which means it should be great for travel, light weight, and the in store image I took looked great when enlarged on my 30" screen. I may even buy one myself but I heard from a rumor site that when the new replacement for the NEX-7 comes out, the A-7000, this will probably be their kit lens, but probably without the Zeiss logo.

While there is no one universal "best" lens for travel (depends on shooter and subjects), I too like the 16-70. While the performance is worse than my primes, I find the range to be excellent for most of what I shoot while traveling.

When I travel (light) I usually have my 16-70 as my default lens, and carry a 50F18 for low-light shots, plus a Rokinon 12mm F2 for low-light interior shots and landscapes.

I would say the 24f1.8 is your best bet... Its good for landscape and it is wide enough to cover family/portrait with some landmarks background. It is also wide enough for lunch/dinner shot for food porn or across the table.

I also used my 16mm with UWA adapter when I visited the Vatican city and the Colosseum too.

Ken,

Great pictures from your Spain and Portugal trip!!!Just wanted to ask if you have any experience with the 16-70 F4?

I have to second the 24mm and 50mm combo. I use the SEL24F18z and a Minolta 50mm f1.8 exclusively on my NEX 6 and love the combo. I do sometimes miss the versatility of a zoom but if I were to go on trips I'd stick with the 24mm and crop anything I don't want.

Really though it depends on your shooting style, whether you prefer to snap as you walk (and would maybe prefer the zoom to help you get the shot you want) or maybe you would stop and take the time to frame the shot a little more - in which case a prime is all you need.

I would skip both the 24 and 50mm and just get the 28mm f/2 or 35mm f/1.8. You said what's the best lens, right? Not what are the best lenses.
