65 cross points don't work with 2x extender

When I attach my 2X III extender to my 500mm f4 lens all I get is center point or center point with the 4 other points expansion. Is this what its supposed to do or is there a malfunction?

You are shooting at f8. That is why.

Pp. 100-103 describe the AF sensor functionality with Class A through G lenses, the charts on 104-107 show which class each lens and EF extender combination falls.
